Roger Bagnall received his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in 1972. He was assistant professor of classics at Florida State University for two years before moving in 1974 to Columbia University, where he served as professor of classics and history and as dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. In 2007 he became professor of ancient history and Leon Levy Director of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University, becoming Director Emeritus in 2016 and professor emeritus in 2017. Among the leading historians of Greek and Roman antiquity, Dr. Bagnall enjoys an immense reputation for his work on Roman and Late Antique Egypt, its economy, and its documents on papyri and potsherds. His technical expertise in papyrology is matched by a historical mind of great range. He has also been a pioneer in the application of computer technology to the humanities. Dr. Bagnall has written or edited more than sixty books and over 250 articles, including The Administration of the Ptolemaic Possessions Outside Egypt (1976); Currency and Inflation in Fourth-Century Egypt (1985); (co-author) Consuls of the Later Roman Empire (1987); Egypt in Late Antiquity (1993); (co-author) The Demography of Roman Egypt (1994); The Kellis Agricultural Account Book (1997); The Oxford Handbook of Papyrology (2009); Everyday Writing in the Graeco-Roman East (2011); An Oasis City (2015); and Roman Egypt (2021). A brilliant and respected administrator as well as an internationally known scholar, Dr. Bagnall has served as director and president of the American Society of Papyrologists, president of the International Association of Papyrologists, and director and president of the American Philological Association (now the Society for Classical Studies) and is a member of the American Numismatic Society, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the British Academy and l'Académie Royale de Belgique. In 2019 Dr. Bagnall was appointed Honorary President for Life of the American Society of Papyrologists and Honorary President of the International Association of Papyrologists. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2001and was elected its President in 2023. | |

A Princeton University graduate, Herbert Smith Bailey, Jr. became the youngest head of a university press in the country in 1954 when he assumed that role with the Princeton University Press at age thirty-two. Over the next thirty-two years, he strengthened the Press's publication program and undertook a number of long-term, monumental projects, most notably The Papers of Woodrow Wilson (a 69-volume series, edited by Arthur Link, which was completed in 1993), The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau, and The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein. Mr. Bailey also oversaw the publication of many other multi-volume editions, including the writings of Aaron Burr, Edward Fitzgerald and Soren Kierkegaard. Having come to publishing from the side of science (He was the first science editor at the Press.), Mr. Bailey became recognized as a thoughtful and eloquent spokesman for the role of scholarship across all subjects. In all, about four thousand works of scholarship were published during his tenure at the Press, including winners of the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize and Phi Beta Kappa Awards. Mr. Bailey was also at the forefront of book preservation, establishing a policy as early as the late 1950s that all hardbound books at the Press be printed on acid-free "permanent" paper. Herbert Smith Bailey, Jr. retired from publishing in 1986. He received degrees from Princeton (A.B., 1942; L.L.D., 1986) and Yale Universities (L.H.D., 1970). He died on June 28, 2011, at the age of 89, in Chapel Hill, North Carolinia. | |

American historian Bernard Bailyn received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1953 and taught history there, becoming full professor in 1961, University Professor in 1980, and professor emeritus in 1993. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice: first for his book The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution (1967) which also won the Bancroft Prize, in which he challenged long-standing interpretations of the causes of the American Revolution, and then for Voyagers to the West (1986), a study of Anglo-American migration patterns on the eve of the Revolution. Dr. Bailyn's other books include The New England Merchants in the Seventeenth Century (1955); Education in the Forming of American Society (1960); The Origins of American Politics (1968); The Ordeal of Thomas Hutchinson (1974), which won the National Book Award; The Peopling of British North America (1986); On the Teaching and Writing of History (1994); To Begin the World Anew: The Genius and Ambiguities of the American Founders (2003); Atlantic History: Concept and Contours (2005); and The Barbarous Years (2013). One of the wisest scholars on the colonial and Revolutionary period, Dr. Bailyn has also worked on economic, social and intellectual history. Since 1995 he has concentrated on Atlantic history, the interactions among the peoples of the four continents that border the Atlantic basin. Other posts he has held include editor-in-chief of the John Harvard Library, co-editor of the journal Perspectives in American History and Director of the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History. Professor bailyn was a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea, the British Academy, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and the Mexican Academy of History and Geography. He was awarded the 2010 National Humanities Medal by President Obama. | |

Dr. Ruzena Bajcsy is a pioneering researcher in machine perception, robotics and artificial intelligence. Dr. Bajcsy is the Director of CITRIS at the University of California, charged with shaping the center's vision and scientific strategy. She is also a member of the Neuroscience Institute and the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the former Director of the University of Pennsylvania's General Robotics and Active Sensory Perception Laboratory, which she founded in 1978. She has also served as the Assistant Director of the Computer Information Science and Engineering Directorate (CISE) at the NSF. She has held professorships at Penn, Slovak Technical University and the University of California, Berkeley
Dr. Bajcsy has conducted seminal research in the areas of human-centered computer control, cognitive science, robotics, computerized radiological/medical image processing and artificial vision. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, as well as the Institute of Medicine. In 2001 she was a recipient of the ACM A. Newell award, and Discover Magazine named her to its list of the 50 most important women in science in November 2002. In April 2003 she received the CRA Distinguished Service Award and in May 2003 she became a member of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee.
