 Dates:  1755-1792
Abstract:  These volumes contain an assortment of documents relating to colonial Pennsylvania's relations with Indian groups. There is also a printed essay in the back of the volume that opposes capital punishment and was printed in Philadelphia in 1792.

 Dates:  1829-1847
Abstract:  Marmaduke Burrough was a physician who served as U.S. Consul to Calcutta in 1828 and then Vera Cruz from 1835-1838. This collection contains a range of receipts relating to Burrough's expenses as consul in both Calcutta and Vera Cruz. The Calcutta receipts begin in 1829 and end in 1830. These loose leaf receipts capture a range of Burrough's activity, including bills from physicians, expenses for entertaining, and one for the passage of "a living rhinoceros" to Philadelphia onboard the Georgian. Burrough bought and then brought the second live rhinoceros to the United States in 1830. The animal was displayed in Philadelphia before being sold to a traveling exhibit.

Abstract:  This collection contains a number of tax lists for the collection of revenue on spirits. It begins in 1794, the year of the Whiskey Rebellion, and continues to 1803. The lists appear to be for sellers of "wine and foreign distilled spirits," meaning that this was not the tax Whiskey rebels found odious. Although the documents are not uniform, most lists contain the distiller's name, place of operation, and amount of tax paid.

Title:  Memoria sobre o valor das moedas
 Dates:  1833
Abstract:  This bound volume contains an essay Jacob Frederico Torlade Pereira de Azambuja presented to the American Philosophical Society in 1833. Jacob Azambuja was the Portuguese charge d' affaires in the United States from 1829-1834. The essay describes the monetary history and system of Portugal. Presented after Andrew Jackson's election, banking and currency were important political topics at the time. This essay likely reflects the growing interest APS members had in the subject and in understanding alternative systems to the United States. The essay can offer insight into prevalent European ideas about currency and may offer insight into how these ideas may have influenced how Americans thought about reforming their system.

Abstract:  The Mason and Dixon Survey Collection consists of two volumes relating to their work drawing a border between Pennsylvania and Maryland and a box of correspondence. This entry describes the two volumes. One contains the Penn family's costs, which goes into specific details about items purchased and used for the venture. The second volume is a manuscript copy of the commissioners' minutes from 1760-1768. The commissioners were representatives of both Baltimore and Penn, and gave directions to Mason and Dixon. The minutes contain negotiations between the commissioners, which provide insight into surveying methods and the various disagreements between the two sides about boundaries, particularly as they relate to the Delmarva Peninsula. There are a few mentions of Indians and diplomacy, especially around 1767 when Mason and Dixon were extending the line into the Ohio Country.

Abstract:  J. Stephen Catlett wrote of the Miscellaneous Manuscripts collection that "there is no other way to describe these manuscript letters, essays, and other papers that are contained presently in 49 boxes." Catlett then listed a random assortment of names of authors found in the collection. Each individual item was catalogued in the card catalogue, but his data has now been put online. Rather than try to replicate that data, this entry will focus on some of the main themes of the collection and some of the most notable documents.

Title:  Montgomery family papers, ca. 1650-1900
 Dates:  Circa 1650-1900
Abstract:  This collection consists of an assortment of documents relating to the Montgomery Family that settled in New Jersey around 1701. The documents include items from the 1680s written in England relating to property in New Jersey, a series of letters from the eighteenth century, and a couple of letters from the revolutionary era. The correspondence deals with a range of issues, including trade and business, but they are more often family letters. John Burnett and John and Anna Forbes are the most frequent correspondents. The letters are written variously from Aberdeen, Scotland, Perth Amboy, and even some from Barbados. The remaining collection deals with genealogical material, much of which was written in the nineteenth century, although some was also done in the eighteenth century.
