A glass jar with wooden top. To the top is attached a geared stirring mechanism and crank through which two sets of paddles projecting within the jar can be caused to turn in opposite directions. (Robert P. Multhauf, "Catalogue of Instruments and Models," 1961).

Late Roman or Early Christian lamp with a handle. The lamp is mold-made of reddish-brown material. On the top is a Latin cross. There are four air holes, one in each of the cross arms. The band has two multiple arc motifs on each side, plus a palmette toward the nozzle. The upper face of the handle has two inscribed lines. The nozzle has a small air-filling hole in addition to the wick hole. The bottom of the lamp is inscribed with a palmette-in-lozenge motif, with ringed dots at the ends of the lozenges. Label: "Picked up in Herculaneum 1830 by my wife Caroline E. G. Peale." There is also some hand-written inked text on the lamp itself, highly faded and partially covered by the pasted label.

Peacock facing right, holding a tree branch in its claw. Black border along all four sides. From the House of the Boat of Psyches, Daphne, near ancient city of Antioch (in present day Turkey). Excavated in 1934, under the leadership of Princeton University archaeologists.

Shield heart shaped plaque, mounted on a wooden shield. Inscribed: "Award of Excellence to the American Philosophical Society 1976 Exhibition / A RISING PEOPLE / The Founding of the United States Altrusa Club of Philadelphia / 50th Anniversary, January, 1977."

Five-sided brass plaque, mounted on a mahogany shilef, between gilt bronze oak branches Inscribed: "To the / American Philosophical Society / of Phila. PA / In Grateful appreciation / for the grant to preserve our / historical archives / The Historical Commission / Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church / Presented / Dec. 7 1973 / Phila. PA."

Shovel handle has ringed and paneled sections. Of similar design and treatment to andirons (2009.46), fender (2009.52) and tongs (2009.53). (Murphy D. Smith, "Due Reverence," 1992).
