Description:
Dimension:H:7.500in W:3.000in D:1.500in
Abstract:
This small statuette of a male clergy member is molded of off-white clay. The figure wears a range of Roman Catholic vestments including a tricorn hat (perhaps a biretta) and a 21-button cassock; the man holds a book between his left elbow and his body. The upper portion of the figure’s body is soiled with dust, and the feet of the man and base of the statuette are missing. There is a small chip in the rear upper surface of the tricorn hat. There is evidence of a repair where the neck of the figure meets the body. Tool marks are visible in the clay body, especially beneath the hem of the cassock. No maker’s marks or other identifying inscriptions are visible.

Maltese Figure of a Monk
Description:
Dimension:H:7.500in W:3.250in D:2.500in
Abstract:
This small statuette of a monk is molded of off-white clay. The figure wears sandals and a hooded habit, tied at the waist by a white cord with three knots; these three knots recall the three vows which serve as the foundation for a Franciscan life. The figure’s haircut and beard further identify him as a follower of Saint Francis. It would be appropriate for a statuette representing a Franciscan monk (or friar) to be found on Malta. Two major sects of the tradition have called the island home since the fourteenth century: the Conventual Franciscans are thought to have arrived in Malta by 1355, and the Franciscan Capuchins came to Malta in 1588/89. The upper portion of the figure’s body and the base of the statuette are soiled with dust, and the right hand of the figure is missing. There is a small chip in the upper edge of the figure’s hood. Tool marks are visible in the clay body, especially beneath the hem of the habit and on the underside of the base. No maker’s marks or other identifying inscriptions are visible.

Abstract:
This small statuette of a Maltese "peasant" woman is molded of off-white clay. The figure wears dainty shoes and an ankle-length dress with a fringed hem, belted waist, and fitted bodice; tied around the figure’s neck is a scarf with decorative edging. The figure wears drop earrings. Her hair is pulled back beneath a ghonnella (or Faldetta), a form of head dress or shawl unique to the islands of Malta and Gozo. The upper portion of the figure’s body and the base of the statuette are soiled with dust. Tool marks are visible in the clay body, especially beneath the hem of the woman’s dress and on the underside of the base. Some abrasions are present at the apex of the figure’s head dress. No maker’s marks or other identifying inscriptions are visible.
