This manuscript is by an unknown author who was coming to America to live. It records his voyage from Liverpool, England, to Philadelphia.

This journal describes Welch's journey from his home in England to the coast, the long wait for the wind, the voyage, preparations against possible attack by pirates, visits to Barbados, Nevis, and other islands, and his arrival at Port Royal in Hispaniola.

The first three volumes contain journals of Strahan's travels in Scotland, with records of expenses along the way, for 1751, 1759, 1760, 1766, 1768, 1773, and 1777. Strahan and Benjamin Franklin were in Edinburgh at the same time in 1759. The fourth volume contains "The particulars of the estate of Wm Strahan as it stood on the first of January 1755," and also for 1759 and 1761, with some miscellaneous accounts.

These journeys of botanical exploration include information regarding plants, and his remarks on the condition of remote settlements he visited. The journals cover the territory from Hudson's Bay to the Indian River in Florida, and from the Bahama Islands to the banks of the Mississippi.

This is an account of overland and water travel between Morristown, New Jersey and Camden, South Carolina. It includes interesting information on the travel conditions of the time. The name Francis P. Lee appears at the end of the last journal entry.

Kept during the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this diary notes distances covered and a draft of suggestions for routes for the fur trade.

This item is Lewis' narrative journal of the river trip from Pittsburgh to the winter camp of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, together with meteorological observations. There are also entries by William Clark. Of the 126 leaves in this journal, 31 contain questions by Nicholas Biddle, with William Clark's replies, dated 1810. Includes parts II and III of Nicholas Biddle, "Notes on Indians...", and list of measurements of bones and other natural history specimens, in Lewis' hand. Also contains some sketches and two small maps.

The collection consists of two volumes. The first notebook, "Notes of Queries to William Clark, with replies," (917.3.L58.b), contains Lewis' journal of the river trip from Pittsburgh to winter camp, August 30- December 12, 1803.

These journals were kept while on the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806).

Volume one includes an account of a voyage from England to St. Petersburg and of a journey from thence by Moscow through Poland to meet the Russian army. Plates consist chiefly of plans of battle fields. Volume one contains also List of expenses in the German language. A short index to various articles that are not in the volume. Volume two includes a section entitled "Literæ processus ssmi domini nostri Clementis--Papæ XII."

This volume includes a journal of a campaign in Hungary (1737), and a diary (1738-1739) written in German.

Included in this volume are short treatises on military topics, such as fortification and geometry, and military discipline; an account of campaigns (1689-1697) with the Royal Regiment of Foot in Ireland fighting the Williamite War between King James II and King William III, an account of campaigns under Prince Eugene of Savoy, with lists of troops; a section entitled "Un traittes touchant les conquètes quon pouroit faire en Amerique sur la maison de Bourbon au cas que la querre devienne generale et qui seules peuvent retablir lequilibre de l'Europe;" and lists of imperial regiments. Volume describes campaigns that took place during the successive reign of William of Orange, Queen Anne, George I and George II. British officers of note are John Lindsay, 20th Earl of Crawford and John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough.

The first fifteen volumes of these "Notes of Travel" are Lea's account of his trips to Europe during 1832 and 1852-1853. He met with naturalists, scientists, and did much sightseeing in England, France, Germany, Italy, and Austria. He records in detail visits and discussions with scientists, and makes sketches of many of the places he saw, particularly the Rhine River. The sixteenth volume is a memorandum book, 1853, containing accounts and expenses while in Europe.

This journal was found among the papers of Benjamin Smith Barton, who was Pursh's patron, after his death in 1817. For provenance of manuscript see ms. notes in printed edition by Thomas P. James - 581.974:P97.

This set of journals, copied legibly but with many excisions into the last volume, 914 Sm61, is from a tour of Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France, and England, to inspect technological improvements in manufacturing and mining. There are accounts of visits with C.D. Ebeling, Friedrich Klopstock, J.A.J. Reimarus, Anders Sparmann, and Karl P. Thunberg. Smith bequeathed this journal to the American Philosophical Society with the request that it be published if found to contain information "useful to the manufactories of my country."

This correspondence is principally concerned with business between Pershouse and his brother James in England, with comments on conditions and events in the United States, including anti-British feeling, Thomas Paine's return to America, Jefferson's administration, and immigration. The papers include Pershouse's journal (1800-1838), which includes accounts of travels in England, France, and the United States, letterbooks (1836-1862) of Henry Pershouse, nephew of John, chiefly on business matters, and two volumes of Pershouse genealogical data, compiled by B.M. Pershouse Bayley (1899).

Robert Woodruff was secretary to John Anstey, Loyalists' Claims Commissioner. This journal relates his travels with John Anstey. He describes the towns he visited, and comments on episodes of the American Revolution and on the Federal Convention and state ratifying conventions. The journal covers a trip through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, South Carolina and Georgia. He and Anstey spent a night at Mount Vernon in 1786. Mentions B. Franklin, G. Washington, APS Hall. Also refers to Five Nations country, Georgia's warfare with Creek Indians, and Chief McGillivray. The papers include miscellaneous letters, letterbooks, books, certificates, and diplomas of various members of the Muhlenberg family. Among them are photostats of letters and papers of General John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg and officers of the Continental Army on military affairs in the Southern Department during the American Revolution (1772-1804); photostats of letters to Albert Gallatin, Nathanael Greene, Edward Hand, Winthrop Sargent, Baron von Steuben, William Alexander, and George Washington; photostat of General Muhlenberg's journal of trips to the Ohio (1784, 1797); photostats of letters and notes of Gotthilf H. E. Muhlenberg, including a diary kept at Halle (1771) and extracts of thirty letters to Stephen Elliott of Beaufort and Charleston, South Carolina (1808-1815); photostats of letters of Henry A. Muhlenberg about his biography of General Muhlenberg (1848-1849); and photostats of letters of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787). Also included is an original letterbook of Peter Muhlenberg, paymaster of the United States Army, kept at Augusta and Savannah, Georgia (1836-1842). Henry Muhlenberg's notebooks (1784-1813), written in Latin or German script, in a small hand, includes a wealth of botanical observations, with a focus on Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Henry Muhlenberg journals are a record of daily occurrences, with many features of a commonplace book, containing prescriptions, notes of questions asked candidates for the Lutheran ministry, and the plan of a barn. There is also a biographical account of Rev. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787).

This is a collection of letters, letterbooks, account books, scrapbooks, etc., concerning the families of Robert Hare and Thomas Willing. The letters and other documents include early family material, as well as documents written by numerous family relations, and some obviously only collected by them. The Willing family letters (1744-1901) are diverse, concerning family matters, business, society, comments on the Civil War, etc. There are numerous letters from Thomas Willing, many concerning his banking career, as President of the Bank of North America and later at the first Bank of the U.S. The Hare family letters (1724-1965) are more extensive and diverse, including much on travel in the U.S. and elsewhere. There is a letter from Robert Hare Jr. concerning steam engines, and letters from Horace Binney Hare concerning his education at Harvard, 1860, his trip to San Francisco and the west, 1862, and numerous letters written while a soldier in the Civil War. There are many letters from Horace Binney (1780-1875, DAB) to his daughter Esther, who was married to John Innes Clark Hare (1816-1905, DAB), concerning family travel and court cases. There are also letters from outside the family, such as those from Dorothea L. Dix. The bound volumes include, among others: Robert Hare letterbooks (1824-1825, 1841-1857), estate records, and laboratory expense accounts (1818-1860); G. H. Hare's journal or log of cruises aboard the U.S. United States (1841) and U.S. Flint (1845); Horace Binney Hare's 1862 journal of his trip to San Francisco. There are account books and accounts (1754-1795) kept by Thomas Willing; accounts of the controversy over the estate of John Innes Clark; and records of the First Colored Wesley Methodist Church of Philadelphia (receipt book, 1820-1848; minute book, 1827-1844). There are also Philadelphia court records, and minutes of the Common Council of the city, 1832.
