Chippendale double-pedestal medical desk, ca. 1780. Molded rectangular top formed by a pair of hinged ends which open outward (each contains a lid and a storage space within). These flank a lift-up center section. Opened, a fitted work surface (covered with green baize, and a pigeonhold seciton with two ivory drawer pulls) is exposed with a fall-front mock drawer. All of this section surmounts a conforming cockbeaded wide drawer with continuous case moldings. The twin pedestals beneath are each fitted with a graduate series of three cockbeaded drawers which are flanked by large brass carrying-handles to the sides, all above a continuous deep base molding. (Murphy D. Smith, "Due Reverence," 1992).

Medallion with Relief Portrait of Thomas Paine
Description:
Dimension:H:4.500in W:3.625in D:0.750in
Abstract:
Small, plaster, bust-length portrait relief of Thomas Paine within an oval medallion. The top center of the medallion has been fitted with a small brass loop. Medallion appears to have been cast in plaster from a mold. Finishing touches were probably added by hand and may have included smoothing (especially of mold seams, one of which is visible at the top center of the medallion’s outside rim) and light burnishing. The reverse of the medallion is marked "T. Paine" in script. While this inscription closely resembles Paine’s signature, it was likely not signed by Paine himself. The maker and date of this object are presently unknown, but it may have been created after the 1793 print by William Sharp.

English mahogany secretary bookcase in two sections. Key-fret frieze molding and a pair of glabed doors of interlaced heart-and-diamond mullion work encloses the interior of wooden shelves. The lower section has a straight front of four cockbeaded drawers and is hinged to fall outward into a writing board. The interior of the desk houses a row of four small square drawers at each end; the center has a long drawer over three open shelves, flanked by a closed compartment with a plain door. (Murphy D. Smith, "Due Reverence," 1992). The upper section originally had a delicately carved and pierced swan's neck pediment with a central-urn finial suspended with swags adjoining the leafy rosette terminals above a central shell-carved plinth (now missing).
