Secretary of State, under Washington, from 1790 to 1793; vice-president from 1796-1801; president, 1801-1809. As President of the American Philosophical Society, from 1797 to 1815, Jefferson actively promoted geographical, paleontological, botanical, and linguistic studies in the United States.

He served as envoy and consultant for the U.S. government on Indian affairs and was correspondent with P. S. Du Ponceau on Indian linguistics.
