	Abstract:	Eli Price was a prominent Philadelphia lawyer who became a member of the APS in 1854. This small manuscript collection is primarily related to his legal career and financial dealings. Court records and other legal documents comprise much of the collection. There are other types of documents as well, including some correspondence about international trade, business, and politics. The most notable letters include one to Daniel Webster regarding patent applications, a series of letters on lobbying efforts to reduce the tariffs on teas coming from Asia, and an essay by Price on the "impolicy" of slavery that he delivered to the "association formed for the education of men of colour." 	Abstract:	This bound volume contains the journal William Shippen kept while receiving medical training in London. Shippen would go on to become a leading doctor, specializing in obstetrics, in the early republic. This journal keeps track of his daily activities and includes personal anecdotes as well as notes on his education. Many entries note when he awoke and when he began his rotation. 	Abstract:	This collection contains the Minutes of the Board of Visitors for the Albemarle Academy (1814) and Central College (1817-1819), the predecessors of the University of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison were members of the Board. Monroe's service on a committee is listed, and Jefferson is listed as rector for the university. Among the topics discussed were professorships for Natural History and Ancient Languages. Robert Patterson of Philadelphia received the appointment – and a salary of $600. 	Abstract:	The Robert Patterson Collection contains a range of documents that touch on many different topics, although most have to do with science and engineering. The earliest documents relate to the Leiper Canal, including Rittenhouse's appraisal of it, and official documents relating to its creation. The largest portion of the documents is scientific correspondence to Robert Patterson, a member of the American Philosophical Society. Much of this correspondence is done under the cover of official APS business. Of particular note are a series of letters relating to nautical calculations that include complex equations used to determine longitude and latitude for nautical almanacs. There are also various lecture notes on natural philosophy, death, mathematics, engineering, and other subjects. View finding aid for a full description
