Alt. Title:
Bible. French. Ostervald. 1724
Creator:
Ostervald, Jean Frédéric, 1663-1747
Publication:
Chez Z. Chatelain, Amsterdam, [n.d.]
Notes:
"Le Nouveau Testament" has special title page, with imprint, Amsterdam: Jean Frederic Bernard & Herman Uitwerf ; Rotterdam: Jean Daniel Beman, 1724. Before 1723 Ostervald's Arguments and reflexions had existed only in ms., and in an English translation, which had been printed at the request of his London friends and under the auspices of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Tenison. The success obtained by this English book made the Amsterdam printers demand the author's leave to publish the French original. They obtained his permission only by threatening otherwise to have the English version retranslated into French. Accordingly these Arguments et réflexions appeared separately in 1723 and again 1724, accompanying a text of the French Geneva version, which was slightly revised by Ostervald. The Reflexions are printed at the end of each chapter. French Geneva version, slightly revised and annotated by J.F. Ostervald. Title in red and black, with vignette. Includes bibliographical references.
