The Linguistic Society of America was organized in 1924 in New York City, but there is little, if any, material in the archive relating to its early history. The bulk of the collection dates after 1960, although there is scattered correspondence and material for the decades prior to that time. There are administrative records (records of the officers, secretariat, committees, general correspondence); records concerning the summer linguistics institutes run by the LSA; annual meeting records; membership records; material relating to the publications of the LSA; and substantial material concerning affiliations with other organizations (ACLS, NAS, NRC, NEH, Social Science Research Council). There are also financial records of the Society.

This collection contains correspondence between Kneeland and Professor Le Métayer de Guichainville, a French archaeologist who was living in New York City. The letters are professional and personal, concerning the archaeology of the Americas, the origins of the Indians and pre-history of North America, the evolution of man and the lost continent of Atlantis. There is also information of interest about the presentation of popular scientific lectures in late nineteenth-century America.

These papers include letters, reports, minutes, memoranda, and addresses to Indian chiefs, selected from the Pickering papers from the Massachusetts Historical Society. Includes letters and documents pertaining to Pickering, Henry Knox, John Sergeant, Jasper Parrish and Samuel Kirkland; relates to New York and Western Indian affairs, principally Iroquois, but also Nanticoke, Shawano, Delaware, Wyandot, Miami, Seneca.

Includes: Minutes of the Committee for Promoting the Improvement and Gradual Civilization of the Indian Natives (1795-1895), Minutes of the Friendly Association for Regaining and Preserving Peace with the Indians by Pacific Measures (1756-1891); miscellaneous papers of teachers, pupils, visitors to Tunessassa Indian School, Quaker Bridge, New York, mostly twentieth century.

Thomas F. Anderson (1911-1991) was a biophysicist and electron microscopist whose research included Raman spectroscopy; the physiology of yeast; the biological effects of radiation; the biological applications of electron microscopy; and the genetics of bacteria, bacterial viruses, and bacteriophage. He was a Professor of Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania and a Senior Member of the Institute for Cancer Research in Fox Chase.

The Thomas Jefferson papers contain a large number of correspondence both to and from Jefferson, as well as various other material related to American Revolutionary War and Early Republic. These are letters of William Hewson, Mary Stevenson Hewson, and Thomas Tickell Hewson, chiefly to members of the family on personal affairs. There are also a transcript of a draft of William Hewson's account of his quarrel with Dr. William Hunter and a letter from Barbeu Du Bourg to Mary Stevenson Hewson.

One of the most important natural historians in nineteenth century Britain, Charles Darwin provided the first compelling mechanism to account for organismal evolutionary change. Although lacking a coherent model of heredity, Darwin's natural selection has exerted an enormous influence over the biological sciences and since the introduction of Mendelian genetics, had remained the key unifying principle in the discipline. The APS Darwin Papers are a large a valuable assemblage of Darwin's correspondence with scientific colleagues, including Charles Lyell and George J. Romanes. They are included in the print version of the Correspondence of Charles Darwin (Cambridge Univ. Press).

Meehan (1898: 42) reports the specimen as Populus monilifera Ait. (Hort. Kew. 3: 406. 1789). The taxon is far better known as P. deltoides var. occidentalis Rydb. (in Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 1: 15. 1900; see Little in U.S.D.A. Agric. Handb. 541: 206. 1979). The specimen was gathered in Aug 1806 without further elaboration. On 26 Jul 1806, Lewis observed P. angustifolia, P. balsamifera subsp. trichocarpa, and P. deltoides subsp. monilifera growing together along the Two Medicine River in Pondera Co., Montana, but there is no indication he collected any specimens (Moulton, 1993: 127-133). The next reference to P. deltoides subsp. monilifera is on 9 Sep 1806 when Clark mentions the river bottom was covered by tall timber along the Missouri River in Nemaha Co., Nebraska, and Atchison Co., Missouri (Moulton, 1993: 354-355). As the species is common throughout the upper Great Plains, the specimen could have been collected anywhere (see Little in U.S.D.A. Agric. Misc. Bull. 1146: Map 149. 1971). This is a diverse collection, including correspondence, drafts of letters, notes and notebooks (on biometric methods; tables and formulae; science, nature and method; coefficient and correlation; vitalism; Japanese language); commonplace book (1924); autobiography; and over one hundred folders of unpublished writings. The correspondence and other material covers a variety of topics, including biology, eugenics, evolution and natural selection, human heredity, paramecia, protozoa genetics, U.S. immigration policy. There is much on the Seventh International Congress of Zoology (1907); letters to his father and wives, and from students and colleagues on his seventy-fifth birthday, 1943 (1 v.); diplomas and certificates of membership; and photographs.

This collection includes correspondence on natural history and evolution, and especially on his collection and study of shells from Japan and the Pacific islands. Principal correspondents include Louis Agassiz, Charles Robert Darwin, Sir William Henry Flower, Alpheus Hyatt, George Newbold Lawrence, George J. Romanes, Alfred R. Wallace, and the Linnean Society of London.

An early Welsh emigrant to Pennsylvania, David Evans was educated at Yale (1713) before answering the call to Presbyterian pulpits in the Welsh Tract of Delaware and Pennsylvania, and to the church at Pilesgrove, N.J. Written entirely in Latin in 1747 when Evans was 66 years old, the Aliquot Rudimenta Physicae consists of four separate compendia bound together, the Compendium Technologiae, Logicae, Rhetoricae, and Physicae. The work is an interesting and thorough attempt to summarize a system of knowledge with impeccable American provenance.

In addition to correspondence relating to poultry genetics and egg production, there are significant notes concerning breeding records, heredity, and race genetics. There are 42 class notebooks kept by Goodale, and 62 volumes of Mount Hope Poultry Farm family, hatching, mating records for the period 1918 to 1956. The collection includes photographs, glass-lantern lecture slides, and artifacts of poultry feathers.

Leonard Carmichael was a psychologist whose most significant contributions were made in the fields of child psychology and biopsychology. Educated at Tufts and Harvard, he taught at Princeton, Brown, and Rochester, later returning to Tufts to serve as its President from 1938-1952. An outstanding administrator, Carmichael served as executive officer for the Smithsonian Institute from 1952-1964, and was subsequently vice president for research and exploration at the National Geographic Society. In his later years, he served as President of the American Philosophical Society from 1970-1973. This large and varied collection reflects the entire range of Carmichael's prolific career. It includes a variety of types of records, including correspondence, committee reports and records, long series of articles and speeches, drafts of papers and books, and pocket notebooks. All phases of his professional life are covered, from his years in academia, to his time at the Smithsonian Institute and the National Geographic Society, as well as his involvement in a large number of professional organizations.

Ashley Montagu (1905-1999), physical anthropologist, was a prominent figure in American intellectual life. British by birth, educated at University College London and the London School of Economics, then Columbia University in New York City, Montagu was a persistent advocate for gender and racial equality. He was a tireless activist for human understanding and child welfare in particular. Departing from academe in 1955, a victim of McCarthyite hysteria, he was a remarkably prolific writer and speaker, eventually publishing more than 50 books, over 40 of them after he left the academy. Montagu continued to lobby passionately against the primacy of race in discussions of intellect and skill, and undertook works in a wide variety of fields, from evolution to parenting. Some of his most significant works include Man's Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race (1942), the UNESCO Statement on Race (1951), Man and Aggression (1968) and his novel The Elephant Man (1971), which became the basis for an award winning play and movie. Ashley Montagu's contributions to the spread of scientific knowledge and human understanding make him one of the most important intellectuals of the 20th century.
