The collection consists of correspondence, notes, memoranda, extracts from publications, reprints, drafts of essays, poems, magazine and newspaper articles, comic strips, popular songs, and other material on bioluminescence, collected principally between 1945-1959 for his History of Luminescence from the Earliest Times until 1900 (American Philosophical Society Memoirs 44, 1957). Other topics are chemistry, military medicine, natural history, and professional associations.

These are primarily papers relating to the work of the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, with special reference to surveys of harbors of the eastern United States. Some papers and letters relate to natural history and are addressed to John Lawrence LeConte. Correspondents include Rutherford B. Hayes, Joseph Henry, Daniel Parker, and E.G. Squier.

Nine of these letters are addressed to Sir Alexander Dick of Edinburgh (1763-1768), and relate to Morgan's medical studies, his travels on the Continent, and the founding of the medical department of the College of Physicians. These are copies of originals in possession of Mrs. Dick Cunyngham, Prestonfield House, Edinburgh. In addition there are letters from Morgan to: Petrus Camper, William Smith, Samuel Vaughan, Jr.; and from Peter Collinson to Camper; Camper to Morgan; S. Vaughan Jr. to Camper; and an exchange between Christian F. Michaelis and Camper. These concern Morgan, with mentions of fossils (mastodon bones in America), natural history, comments on Franklin, Jefferson, and Angelica Kauffmann. These are from originals in the Petrus Camper Papers, on deposit (1976) at the University of Amsterdam Library.

This collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, drawings, diaries, notebooks, and photographs. Sanderson began his travels in the jungles of Asia and Africa before starting his formal schooling at Eton and Cambridge in the late 1920s and early 1930s. His papers reflect his interest in animals, jungles, and natural history. Late in his life Sanderson's interest turned to UFO's and he was the director of the Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained.

Consists of material chiefly on natural history, shells, and insects, including miscellaneous notes on conchology by Say; photostats of 6 letters from Say to Jacob Gilliams, 1819-1829, from Morristown, New Jersey; and a biographical note on Say. The drawings and impressions of shells are by Mrs. Lucy Way Sistaire Say, prepared for W. G. Binney's edition of Say's complete works on conchology, 1858; also Mrs. Say's refutation of what she considered an unfair attack in George Ord's memoir of Say. Correspondents include André Etienne Férussac, Arthur F. Gray, John Lawrence LeConte, and Charles W. Short. An additional item is a memorial volume (ca. 150 pp.), including a family genealogy and land surveys in watercolor (B Sa95f).

Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864, APS 1805) was a scientist and educator. As a professor of chemistry at Yale University from 1802 to 1853, and pioneering teacher of chemistry, mineralogy and geology, Silliman was largely responsible for the conversion of Yale College to Yale University, with strong medical and scientific departments.

These papers include letters on natural history, metals and mineralogy, botany, insects, the geological survey of New York, and analyses of distilled liquors in the cause of temperance.

This collection of letters and documents relates primarily to Charles Waterton (B W31n) but included as well are papers of the family (B W31m). Most of the letters to or from Waterton concern birds, bird mating, domestic news, natural history, and Walton Hall, his estate. In addition, there are recipes and a housekeeping account book (1780-1781). There are numerous letters with his sisters-in-law, Eliza and Helen Edmonstone, and also an exchange of letters between Waterton's son Edmund and Sir George Bowyer concerning Papal audiences.

Includes letters by Franklin, Winthrop, Endecott, Eliot, etc. Scientific and historical references, primarily. Some of the subjects discussed are astronomy, botany, electricity, natural history, and Indian missions. Also included is Roger Curtis' "Journal of the Moravian Mission to Labrador."

This is a miscellaneous collection of manuscripts (ca. 35 items) from the British Museum, selected for filming by Whitfield J. Bell, Jr. Included are letters, botanical lists, illustrations, and other types of documents.

These are to Darlington from Spencer F. Baird, Robert Carr, Edward D. Ingraham, Moses Marshall, George Ord, John Jay Smith, and John F. Watson, among others. A letter from Joseph Johnson encloses a sketch of the life of Stephen Elliott (1771-1830).

This microfilm contains correspondence from scientists, including Friedrich Wilhelm Bissell, 1816-1846 [from Deutsche Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin]; Matthew F. Maury, 1849-1859 [from National Archives, Washington, D.C.]; Paulus Usteri, 1789-1821 [from Bibliothèque Universitaire, Zurich; and Johann G. Galle, 1836-1858 [from Frau von Heinz, Schloss Tegal]. There is also correspondence from the Royal Society, London; Bibliothèque Nationale, Geneva; Göttingen University Library; British Museum; Massachusetts Historical Society; Bancroft Library of the University of California; Yale University; Henry E. Huntington Library; Library of Congress; the Alexander von Humboldt Kommission; Westdeutsche Bibliotek, Marburg; and Deutsche Staatsbibliotek, Berlin. The materials were, in general, collected by Helmut de Terra and contain correspondence with various scientists. A few items pertain to Humboldt's travels and general comments on American Indian linguistics.

These letters and papers include a memorandum book (1795-1827), lectures on botany and medicine, genealogical materials, committee reports from Columbia College, speeches, minutes of the New York Horticultural Society (1822-1828), letters to Sir James Edward Smith (1817-1826), a receipt book of Alexander Hosack (1781-1801), and diaries of Thomas K. Wharton (1830-1862).

A miscellaneous collection of letters written by naturalist Louis Jean Rodolph Agassiz concerning a wide range of topics: natural history and naturalists, geology, mineralogy, fossils, publications, expeditions, and the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard, which he founded.

Principal correspondents in the lettes of John Fries Frazer include Alexander Dallas Bache, Louis Agassiz, Joseph Henry, and Titian Ramsay Peale who discuss mainly general scientific topics, although personal and family matters are discussed with Bache. Topics include the University of Pennsylvania, boiler explosions, chemistry, education, the National Academy of Sciences, the Smithsonian Institution, fossils, magnetism, solar eclipses, the American Philosophical Society, weights and measures, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, scientific instruments, the American Civil War, electricity, the United States Mint, the Franklin Institute, scientists of the period, natural history, and publications.

A variety of topics are discussed in these letters, mainly on plant specimens and botanical subjects in relation to England, India, and other parts of the world. The most voluminous correspondence is with Henry Walter Bates, Sir Henry Cole, Sir Richard Strachey, Dawson Turner, and William Crawford Williamson.

This collection contains miscellaneous letters and papers relating to explorations of South America, Cuba, and Mexico; scientific investigations; Latin American antiquities and linguistics; and publications. There are also copies of 26 letters from Humboldt to Pierre Hyacinth Azais and Jules Berger de Xivrey, from originals at the Duke University Medical Center Library.

This is a miscellaneous collection of letters, to and from Lubbock, concerning his lectures and his interest in paleontology, as well as references to political matters, particularly the Irish question, and numerous mentions of the legislative bills with which he was involved. There are letters concerning his publications, "Prehistoric Times" (1865), and "Sense and Intelligence of Animals" (1888).
