This volume contains reports made for the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres on such topics as astronomy, geometry, and natural history.

This collection was assembled by Court and was partly used in the book, "The History of the Microscope" (with Reginald S. Clay, London, 1932). There is historical correspondence (including some by Court), documents, broadsides, and photographs, concerning microscopes and instruments. This includes material on Joseph Bonomi, James Epps, John Lee, Edward Nairne, and others. There is significant material on Cornelius Varley: account book, autobiographical sketch, watercolors and sketches, etc. This collection also contains a large number of deeds pertaining to the property of John Lee (1783-1866), Fellow of the Royal Society and an amateur astronomer. In addition, there are about 300 pamphlets, including early trade and auction catalogs, used by Court for his research.

This volume was kept while Piggott was imprisoned by Napoleon at Fontainebleau. Subjects mentioned include astronomy, comets, and botanical gardens.

This microfilm of Somerville's papers was compiled by Elizabeth C. Patterson for her book, "Mary Somerville and the Cultivation of Science, 1815-1840" (Boston: Martinus Nijhoff, 1983). It includes Somerville's scientific writings, personal writings, "letters from celebrities," family papers, genealogy, and photographs. Subjects of some of her writings include astronomy, Halley's comet, effects of light, and physical geography.

Letters collected by Whitfield J. Bell, Jr., including correspondence and papers submitted to the Society. Pertains to APS members and associations. Includes letters by Franklin, Winthrop, Endecott, Eliot, etc. Scientific and historical references, primarily. Some of the subjects discussed are astronomy, botany, electricity, natural history, and Indian missions. Also included is Roger Curtis' "Journal of the Moravian Mission to Labrador."

This microfilm contains correspondence from scientists, including Friedrich Wilhelm Bissell, 1816-1846 [from Deutsche Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin]; Matthew F. Maury, 1849-1859 [from National Archives, Washington, D.C.]; Paulus Usteri, 1789-1821 [from Bibliothèque Universitaire, Zurich; and Johann G. Galle, 1836-1858 [from Frau von Heinz, Schloss Tegal]. There is also correspondence from the Royal Society, London; Bibliothèque Nationale, Geneva; Göttingen University Library; British Museum; Massachusetts Historical Society; Bancroft Library of the University of California; Yale University; Henry E. Huntington Library; Library of Congress; the Alexander von Humboldt Kommission; Westdeutsche Bibliotek, Marburg; and Deutsche Staatsbibliotek, Berlin. The materials were, in general, collected by Helmut de Terra and contain correspondence with various scientists. A few items pertain to Humboldt's travels and general comments on American Indian linguistics.

Apart from its importance for the study of Hale's personal and professional life, the collection is one of the richest sources for the history of science in the United States in the early twentieth century. It contains a good deal of significant material relating to the theoretical and instrumental development of astrophysics and the history of the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories. The collection is of singular importance for the study of science and government, particularly with respect to the affairs of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council. It documents much of the early history of the California Institute of Technology. Finally, it contains substantial material on the general affairs of the scientific community in the United States and Europe [from Kevles 1968].

This collection includes correspondence, articles, newsclippings, photographs, and recordings, concerning Menzel's documentation of UFOs as natural phenomena explainable in scientific terms. One can find material on the National Investigation Committee on Aerial Phenomena, Project Blue Book, the Velikovsky controversy, and a card file of meteor activity, 1946-1961.

This collection pertains almost exclusively to Olivier's interest in meteors. Generally, there are only a few letters per person and for many correspondents, only one.

This item contains much information about his various posts and about conflicts, personalities, and the politics of science. There are also many references and comments about scientific technology of the day, and of such people as Matthew F. Maury. There are numerous letters to A. D. Bache, James Henry Coffin, Charles Henry Davis, and William H. Willcox.

This collection includes correspondence to and from Boskovic; a travel journal in Europe; and a large number of manuscripts on astronomy, hydrography, hydro-mechanics, mathematics, geometry, mechanics, and optics; and a volume of poetry.

Theodore Dunham, Jr, (1897-1984) was an American astronomer, physicist, and physician. Throughout his career, Dr. Dunham pioneered research on interstellar cosmic rays, the development of telescopes, stellar spectrophotometry, the study of interstellar material and the spectrophotometry of cells. The Theodore Dunham , Jr. Papers (1921-1984) contain professional correspondence, research notes, published and unpublished works by Dunham and others, detailed photographs and oversize sketches of astronomical observations, administrative details of the Mount Desert Island Astronomical Association and of a career-long association with the Fund for Astrophysical Research. Includes some medical research, but primarily contains his astrophysical research conducted at Mount Wilson Observatory, California and Mount Stromlo Observatory, Australia.

This is a miscellaneous collection of letters, almost all written to Smyth by prominent scientists. The topics discussed include astronomy, microscopes, nautical almanacs, and submarine excursions. Also of interest is a letter from Thomas Graves, reporting what the Beagle (Charles Darwin's voyage) was encountering in South American waters.

These are letters to Quetelet primarily on the subject of astronomy (meteorological observations), including charts showing directions of shooting stars.

The manuscripts of father William Mitchell and daughter Maria Mitchell are not easily separated, and are treated here together. The collection includes William Mitchell's autobiography, his memoir of Judge Walter Folger of Nantucket, astronomical and meteorological observations, lectures, family and other correspondence.

Robert Maskell Patterson (1787-1854, APS 1809) was a professor of chemistry and natural philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania (1812-1828) and professor of natural philosophy at the University of Virginia (1828-1835). He was director of the U.S. Mint from 1835 to 1851. His father, Robert Patterson, was a revolutionary soldier, professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania (1779-1814), and director of the U.S. Mint (1805-1824).
