Nili Cohen was born in 1947 in Kfar Saba and graduated from the Ironi Dalet High School in Tel Aviv. She started her academic path in the Faculty of Law at Tel Aviv University and completed her LL.B magna cum laude. In 1971 she started her LL.M degree and gained it summa cum laude in 1975.
In 1978, Nili Cohen was awarded her Ph.D. from Tel Aviv University for her thesis “The Protection of Obligation against Interference by Third Parties”, which was supervised by Israel Prize Laureate and former Minister of Justice, Prof. Daniel Friedmann. She became a full professor at Tel Aviv University in 1989.
Her research deal with contract law, tort law, the law of unjust enrichment, and law and literature, a field she has developed in recent years. Her main work in the field of contract, co-authored with Prof. Daniel Friedmann, is reflected in the four-volume series Contracts, which is frequently cited in Israel’s courts.
Over the years, Nili Cohen has been involved in Comparative Law enterprises around the world. She is a member of the American Law Institute in which she took part in the advisory committee to Restitution3rd. She co-authored two chapters in the International Encyclopaedia of Comparative Law, and she took part in the project of the Common Core of European Private Law.
Nili Cohen has won a number of awards for her academic activities, including: The Sussman Prize for her book Interference with Contractual Relations, the Zeltner Prize for her book Inducing Breach of Contract. She was again awarded the Sussman Prize for Contracts (with Prof. Daniel Friedmann), and in 2002, she was awarded the Minkoff Prize for Excellence in Law. In the academic years 2003/4, 2004/5, and 2014/15 she won the Rector’s Prize at Tel Aviv University for Excellence in Teaching.
In 1994 Nili Cohen was elected for the position of Vice Rector at Tel Aviv University and between 1997 and 2001 she served as the University’s Rector. A member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2004, she served as its President in 2015-2021. In this capacity, she promoted academic research in Israel, encouraged the role of women in science, advanced young researchers, promoted international academic ties, contributed to the development and shaping of legal and academic research in Israeli society and to opening the Academy’s gates to the general public.
Since 2004 she organizes the open series on Law and Literature at Tel-Aviv University, within which the most prominent Israeli authors, Amos Oz, A"B Yehoshua, David Grossman, Meir Shalev, Haim Beer, Zeruya Shalev take part.
Nili Cohen is an Israel Prize Laureate in the field of legal research for 2017, a member of Academia Europaea, a member of the American Philosophical Society and holds an honorary professorship from the University of Buenos Aires, as well as honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Haifa and from the University of Ben-Gurion.
Her late husband Amiram was a lawyer. They have three children and eight grandchildren. | |

Sandra Díaz is Professor of Ecology at Córdoba National University, senior member of the Argentine National Research Council and Visiting Professor at the School of Geography and the Environment, Oxford University. She is interested in plant functional traits and syndromes, their effects on ecosystem properties and their interactions with global change drivers. She constructed the first global quantitative picture of essential functional diversity of vascular plants –the global spectrum of plant form and function. She has advanced theory and practical implementation of the concept of functional diversity and its effects on ecosystem properties and benefits. She combines her ecology studies with interdisciplinary work on how different societies value and reconfigure nature. She founded Núcleo DiverSus on Diversity and Sustainability, and co-founded the Global Communal Plant Trait Initiative TRY. She co-chaired the Global Assessment of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. She is a member of the Academies of Sciences of Argentina, USA, France, Norway, Latin America and the Developing World, and Foreign Fellow of the British Royal Society. Bernie Fanaroff was the Director of the South African Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Radio Telescope Project from its initiation in 2003 until 2015. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and a Founder Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. He has been awarded the South African national Order of Mapungubwe, the Karl Jansky Lectureship of Associated Universities Inc and the NRAO, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the National Research Foundation, the Science for Society Gold Medal of the Academy of Science of South Africa and several honorary degrees. He was a Visiting Professor at Oxford University.
He has a BSc Honours degree in physics from the University of the Witwatersrand and a PhD in radio astronomy from Cambridge University. During his PhD he published the Fanaroff-Riley classification of radio galaxy and quasar morphology with fellow student Julia Riley, which continues to be a basic classification of the jets which carry energy away from the accretion disks surrounding super-massive black holes in the centres of most galaxies.
He left academia in 1976 to become a national organizer in South Africa of the nascent Metal and Allied Workers Union, one of the new non-racial unions then being organized in opposition to the legally-recognised unions which excluded Black workers, who had no rights under apartheid. He became a national secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa in 1987. When Nelson Mandela became President after the first democratic election in 1994, he became Deputy Director General in the Office of the President and Head of the Office for the Reconstruction and Development Programme, government’s central programme to build the country after apartheid. He became Deputy Director General of the Secretariat for Safety and Security in 1997 and chaired the Integrated Justice System Board and the Inter-Departmental Committee for Border Control. He led the drafting of the new Firearms Control Act. He left government in 2000.
He led the bid by South Africa, with eight other African countries, to host the world’s largest telescope, the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope. The bid was successful in 2012. The SKA South African team also designed and built the MeerKAT radio telescope, a world-leading telescope which has made major discoveries in the evolution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies and in pulsar and transient radio source discovery and timing, as a result of its unique sensitivity, timing accuracy and imaging quality. The MeerKAT will become part of the SKA Mid-Frequency Array in the late 2020s.
SKA South Africa developed a world-leading Human Capital Development Programme, which enabled the development of a large and thriving radio astronomy science and technology community in South Africa from the initial five radio astronomers in 2003. It also trains scientists and engineers from the eight African partner countries. The SKA SA HCD programme led to the successful Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA) and the DARA Big Data programmes in partnership with the UK Government’s Newton Fund.
He was an adviser to the Director of the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, the successor to the SKA South Africa project. He has been appointed by the Minister for Trade, Industry and Competition to lead the development and implementation of a tripartite plan for the recovery and growth of the steel and steel products industries in South Africa. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Breakthrough Listen project of the Breakthrough Initiatives and a Trustee of the Paleontological Scientific Trust. | |

Peter Godfrey-Smith is Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of California, San Diego in 1991. Before his time at the University of Sydney, he taught philosophy at Stanford University, Australian National University, Harvard University, and The Graduate Center, City University of New York.
Godfrey-Smith's work has expanded the agenda for both the philosophy of biology and for the philosophy of mind. His two most recent books, Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness (2016) and Metazoa: Animal Life and the Birth of the Mind (2020), have already had an enormous impact, not only in philosophy but also across a wide range of disciplines. The former book has already been translated into seven languages, and translations into 13 more are forthcoming. Together with the more technical presentation given in "Mind, Matter, and Metabolism," these books pioneer a novel and well-grounded approach to understanding mental life. Besides his work in this area, he is also well-known for his work on a number of topics in the philosophy of biology: the concept of function, the understanding of signaling, the theory of multi-level selection, and the structure of Darwinian theory. He has also made seminal contributions to the general philosophy of science, and to the reconstruction of Dewey's pragmatism.
Godfrey-Smith's bibliography also includes: Complexity and the Function of Mind in Nature (1996), and Darwinian Populations and Natural Selection (2009), for which he won the Lakatos Award. Desmond King is the Andrew W Mellon Professor of American Government at the University of Oxford, a Fellow of Nuffield College, and an Emeritus Fellow of St John’s College, Oxford. He is a leading scholar of the executive and federal government in US politics, racial inequality, immigration, illiberal forms of government policy often studied comparatively and the politics of social citizenship. His work is both normative and empirical. Drawing on new archival work, his books have documented how the federal government’s employment policies fostered segregation of African Americans in the century to 1975, and the extent to which the US’s founding institutions facilitated persistent discrimination. Subsequent empirical research studies federal responses to the financial crisis of 2008-09 and the rise of unitary executive theory. Professor King was born and educated in Ireland, where he graduated from Trinity College, Dublin. Yannick Nézet-Séguin is a Conductor and Pianist. He is currently Music Director of the Orchestre Métropolitain (Montréal), the Metropolitan Opera, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is also Honorary Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra after serving as Principal Conductor from 2008 to 2018. He studied piano, conducting, composition, and chamber music at the Quebec Conservatory in Montreal and choral conducting at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. Stephen Weiner was born in Pretoria, South Africa. He obtained a BSc degree in chemistry and geology at the University of Cape Town, an MSc in marine geochemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a PhD at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, USA in 1977 working in the field of mineral formation in biology (biomineralization). In the same year he joined the faculty of the Weizmann Institute of Science. He is now a professor emeritus at the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Steve Weiner carries out research in two fields: biomineralization and archaeological science. His biomineralization research focusses on basic mechanisms of mineral formation in biology, on the functions of organic crystals in manipulating light in biology, as well as on structure – function relations in vertebrate mineralized tissues such as bones and teeth. His archaeological research focuses on addressing key questions in archaeology by studying both the visual macroscopic record, as well as revealing the microscopic record with the help of instrumentation. Much of this research is carried out on-site during the excavation. In 1989 he published a book entitled “On Biomineralization” with the late Prof H.A. Lowenstam, and in 2010 he published another book entitled “Microarchaeology: Beyond the Visible Archaeological Record”.
Prof Weiner has published over 350 peer reviewed papers and has a Google H index of 125. He is the recipient of the 2010 prize for excellence of the Israel Chemical Society, the 2011 Aminoff Prize for Crystallography from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and he received the 2013 Pomerance Award for Scientific Contributions to Archaeology from the Archaeological Institute of America. In 2022 he will receive the gold medal of the Israel Chemistry Society; its highest award. | |
