Her research straddles musicology, history and French studies, and covers musical repertoires ranging from medieval plainchant to 20th-century modernism. She seeks to explain the cultural import of musical tastes and practices, while also asking how those in the art-worlds of music negotiated France’s complex aesthetic, social and regulatory frameworks. In journal articles and book chapters she has published widely on the history of music and education, on women's musical careers, on opera and its institutions, on Paris−province relations, and on musical fiction. Her monographs embrace reception history and canon-formation via the historical press (Music Criticism in Nineteenth-Century France, 1995), the early music revival (Interpreting the Musical Past, 2005), and the tangled web of Benedictine musical politics and Church/State relations around 1900 (The Politics of Plainchant in fin-de-siècle France, 2013). Two co-edited collections address the pan-European career of Hector Berlioz (The Musical Voyager, 2008) and text/music relations in the long nineteenth century (Words & Notes, 2013). After degrees in Music at Oxford, a Junior Research Fellowship in French Studies at St Anne’s College, Oxford, lectureships at the Open University and Royal Holloway University of London, and chairs at the Universities of London and Bristol, Katharine Ellis is 1684 Professor at the Faculty of Music in Cambridge. She has acted as joint and solo editor for Music & Letters and the Journal of the Royal Musical Association respectively, and has been a joint guest editor of Dix-neuf. She currently sits on several editorial boards in France and the UK, and is a series editor for Boydell & Brewer’s ‘Music in Society and Culture’ monographs. She co-directs the Francophone Music Criticism 1789-1914 international network www.fmc.ac.uk, was inaugural Director of the Institute of Musical Research at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study (2006-2009), and was recently (2017) elected as a Director-at-Large of the American Musicological Society. | | Birth Date: | 1947 | | | | | David Freedberg is best known for his work on psychological responses to art, and particularly for his studies on iconoclasm and censorship. His more traditional art historical writing originally centered on the fields of Dutch and Flemish art. Within these fields he specialized in the history of Dutch printmaking and in the paintings and drawings of Bruegel and Rubens. He then turned his attention to seventeenth century Roman art and to the paintings of Nicolas Poussin, before moving on to his recent work in the history of science and on the importance of the new cognitive neurosciences for the study of art and its history. Dr. Freedberg has also been involved in several exhibitions of contemporary art. Following a series of important discoveries in Windsor Castle, the Institut de France and the archives of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, he has for some time been concerned with the intersection of art and science in the age of Galileo. While much of his work in this area has been published in articles and catalogues, his chief publication in this area is The Eye of the Lynx: Galileo, his Friends, and the Beginnings of Modern Natural History (2002). He is now devoting a substantial portion of his attention to collaborations with neuroscientists working in fields of vision, movement and emotion. Although Dr. Freedberg continues to teach in the fields of Dutch, Flemish, French and Italian seventeenth century art, as well as in historiographical and theoretical areas, his research now concentrates on the relations between art, history and the neurosciences. He continues to hope that he will be able to return to his longstanding project on the cultural history of the architecture and dance of the Pueblo peoples, but for the moment his energies are largely taken up by his work with neuroscientists. In 1975 he joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University and is currently the J.R. Herbert Boone Professor of Humanities. Michael Fried has combined pioneering work in the history of art with groundbreaking art criticism. He is also a poet. His early criticism of the work of Jules Olitski, Frank Stella, and Anthony Caro, among others, helped to define modernist art of the 1960s in ways that are still influential. His Absorption and Theatricality: Painting and Beholder in the Age of Diderot revolutionized the study of 18th century French art. Through close, extensive analysis of both paintings and literary and dramatic texts, Dr. Fried came to a new understanding of the painting as tableau, and of the role of the beholder, thereby changing an entire field of inquiry. There followed a series of closely argued monographs around the theme of realism, which were devoted to the work of Courbet, Eakins, and Manet. Dr. Fried's sustained critical thinking about realism has now extended to German 19th century painting with the publication of his book on Adolf Menzel. Dr. Fried's A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery of Art on the subject of Caravaggio inspired both the scholarly audience and the more general public. Today, he is one of a handful of historians working successfully across national and chronological boundaries. Michael Fried is the author of Morris Louis (1971); Powers (poems, 1973); Absorption and Theatricality: Painting and Beholder in the Age of Diderot (1980, awarded 1980 Gottschalk Prize); Realism, Writing, Disfiguration: On Thomas Eakins and Stephen Crane (1987, awarded 1990 Charles C. Greenewalt, Jr. was a Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of California, Berkeley from 1978 until his death in 2012. He was also the longtime leader of the Harvard-Cornell archaeological expedition to Sardis, serving as its director from 1976-2008. His skill and an unusual ability to work effectively under difficult field conditions enabled Dr. Greenewalt to become one of the most productive archaeologists in the eastern Mediterranean area. The importance of Sardis - from the pages of Herodotus to the history of the Byzantine empire - makes his work important and interesting to students of many fields. Dr. Greenewalt was the author of detailed annual reports on excavations at Sardis as well as articles and works such as Ritual Dinners in Early Historic Sardis (1978). Both to technical scholars in the discipline and to "buffs," his lucid presentation of data, combined with the personal qualities of restraint and modesty, has made classical archaeology a vital intellectual force. He was awarded the Archaeological Institute of America's Bandelier Award for Public Service to Archaeology in 2012.

Gilbert, she published The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the 19th-Century Literary Imagination in 1979 (Yale University Press), a finalist for both The Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The project was the beginning of many collaborative projects between the two, who together won a 1985 Ms. Woman of the Year award for their compilation of the Norton Anthology of Literature of Women. They also co-authored a critical trilogy titled No Man's Land: The Place of the Woman Writer in the Twentieth Century--The War of the Words (1988), Sexchanges (1989), and Letters from the Front (1994); a collection of poetry for and about mothers, MotherSongs (Norton, 1995); and a satire on the current state of literacy and cultural literacy, Masterpiece Theatre: An Academic Melodrama (Rutgers, 1995).
Gubar’s subsequent books include Racechanges: White Skin, Black Face in American Culture (Oxford, 1997); a compilation of essays, Critical Condition: Feminism at the Turn of the Century (Columbia, 2000); and Poetry After Auschwitz: Remembering What One Never Knew (Indiana, 2003), the product of her year as a Laurence S. Rockefeller Fellow at Princeton University's Center for Human Values. In 2005, she published the first annotated edition of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own in the States (Harcourt Brace). In 2006, her book Rooms of Our Own (Illinois) won an Honorable Mention award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights, and in 2007, with Gilbert, she published a third edition of the Norton Anthology of Literature by Women as well as a Norton Reader of Feminist Literary Theory and Criticism. Among his areas of special interest are medieval manuscript illumination, text-image issues, the history of attitudes towards imagery and visual experience, and German vernacular religious writing of the Middle Ages, especially in the context of mysticism. Beginning with his dissertation on the Rothschild Canticles (Yale, 1987), much of his scholarship has focused on the art of female monasticism, a program of research that culminated in 2005 in an international exhibition, Krone und Schleier (Crown and Veil) that was sponsored by the German government and held jointly in Bonn and Essen. An English translation of the essays in the exhibition catalog was published by Columbia University Press in 2008. His current research includes a project that seeks to integrate digital technology into the study and presentation of liturgical manuscripts, a study of narrative imagery in late medieval German prayer books and a major international exhibition on German manuscript illumination in the age of Gutenberg. The recipient of numerous awards, including fellowships from the John S. Guggenheim Foundation, the American Philosophical Society, the NEH, and the Humboldt-Stiftung, Prof. Hamburger was elected a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America in 2001 and a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2009. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1977 and became curator and head of the Department of Ancient Near East in 1982. Over the course of her career, Dr. Harper led the installation of the museum's Ancient Near Eastern Art galleries, published the results of a major archaeological enterprise (Sasanian Remains from Qasr-i Abu Nasr, 1973) and compiled a thoughtful exhibition on an iconographic and ideological theme with a very important catalog (The Royal Hunter, 1978). The first volume of her Sasanian Silver Vessels (1981), together with a large set of articles, is the standard study of royal images in Late Antique Sasanian art. Her articles on Anatolian ivories and Neo-Babylonian clay scultpures also demonstrate the breadth of her knowledge. Dr. Harper has also been instrumental in maintaining and fostering continuous contacts with scholars in Russia, especially during difficult times. She has taught at Columbia University; the University of Chicago, where she served as department chair; and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was the first Associate Provsot for the Arts. She has served as the President of the American Handel Society and is currently President of the American Musicological Society.
Her most recent book, George Frideric Handel: A Life with Friends (W. W. Norton, 2014), detailing the place of Handel and his music in eighteenth-century London, received the Nicolas Slonimsky Award (ASCAP/Deems Taylor) for Outstanding Musical Biography. Her previous book, Handel as Orpheus: Voice and Desire in the Chamber Cantatas (Harvard University Press, 2001) received the 2002 Otto Kindeldey Award from the American Musicological Society and the 2002-03 Louis Gottschalk Prize from the Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. Her earlier publications include an edition of cantatas for alto voice (Oxford University Press, 2001), a critical facsimile edition of Handel’s opera librettos in 13 vols. (Garland, 1989), Henry Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’ (Oxford, 1987, of which a 30th-anniversary edition is now in preparation), an edition (with Edward Dent) of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Oxford, 1987), and Handel and the Pastoral Tradition (Oxford, 1980). Articles and reviews by Professor Harris have appeared in numerous publications including Journal of the American Musicological Society, Händel Jahrbuch, Notes, and The New York Times. Her article "Handel the Investor" (Music & Letters, 2004), based on her research in the Bank of England, received the 2004 Westrup Prize.
Harris has enjoyed residencies at the Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College in Harvard University (1995-96) and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2004), and in 2005 won the Gyorgy Kepes Prize for her contributions to the arts at MIT. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1998) and made an Honorary Member of the American Musicological Society (2011). For the 2013-14 academic year, she was a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, and in 2016 a Visiting Professor at The Juilliard School. In 1970 she was named professor of art and archaeology at Princeton University, becoming the first woman to be appointed full professor in the department. In 1974 she moved to New York University's Institute of Fine Arts as Professor of the History of Fine Arts. She was Edith Kitzmiller Professor Emerita of the History of Fine Arts and Adjunct Professor at the time of her death on November 3, 2012. She died at home in New York City at the age of 92. Dr. Harrison's publications include The Athenian Agora I: Portrait Sculpture (1953) and Achaic and Archaistic Sculpture (1965). She was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as the Archaeological Institute of America's Gold Medal for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement (1992). A graduate of Cambridge University (Newnham College, 1964-68, first class honours), she did her postgraduate studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London (MA with distinction 1969; PhD 1973). After a research Fellowship at Clare Hall, Cambridge, she taught at University College London, the University of Edinburgh and the Courtauld Institute, before returning to the University of Cambridge in 1992. She was appointed to a Personal Chair in Architectural History in 2001 and served as Head of the Department of History of Art for six years (2002-9, with sabbatical break) before retiring in 2013. On her retirement, her contribution was recognised by two Festschrift volumes, edited by Nebahat Avcıoǧlu, Emma Jones and Allison Sherman (2016-2018). She has an honorary doctorate from University College Dublin (2014).
In 2010 Howard was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. She is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects of Scotland and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
She has held visiting appointments at Yale (summer Term program in London), Harvard (Aga Khan program and the Villa I Tatti), the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, Smith College, Princeton, and the Universities of Melbourne and Queensland.
Among her many committee memberships she served on two Royal Commissions in Scotland between 1987 and 1999 and was Chairman of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain from 1997 to 1999. She was a Trustee of British Architecture Library Trust (2001-10) and a non-executive Director of the British Architectural Trust Board (2011- 16). Since 2011 she has been a board member of the Centro di Studi di Architettura ‘Andrea Palladio’ in Vicenza. She is a Trustee of Venice in Peril, and was elected an Honorary Patron Member of the Society of Architectural Historians of GB in 2020.
Her principal research interests are the art and architecture of Venice and the Veneto; music and architecture in the Renaissance; and the relationship between Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean. In 2005 she established the Centre for Architectural and Musical Experiments in Renaissance Architecture (CAMERA) at Cambridge, supported by grants from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy and the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. She was one of the leaders of a major four-year ERC-funded research project entitled Domestic Devotions: The Place of Piety in the Italian Renaissance home 1400-1600 (2013-7). She has recently completed a research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust on the proto-industrial architecture of the Veneto.

She is the joint author, with Mary Laven and Abigail Brundin, of The Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy (Oxford UP, 2018). Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor in Chinese Art History in the Department of Art History and Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Born in China, he earned his Ph.D. in 1987 from Harvard University. He has won the Levenson Prize of the Association for Asian Studies (1991). His publications include: The Wu Liang Shrine, 1989; Monumentality in Early Chinese Art and Architecture, 1995; The Double Screen: Medium and Representation in Chinese Painting, 1996; (with R. Wu Hung is a leading historian of Chinese art, renowned for his study of art and visual culture in early China. In his 1989 book, The Wu Liang Shrine, he analyzed how a pictorial program in the second century CE reflected Confucian ideology, going beyond the usual formal and iconographical analyses into social history. Art of the Yellow Springs: Understanding Chinese Tombs (2010) examined excavated materials from Neolithic to late Medieval periods and interpreted them in their appropriate funerary contexts. He has also written extensively about twentieth century art. In addition, he has curated more than two dozen exhibitions, largely in contemporary painting and photography, in the United States, Germany, China, and Korea. Wu Hung was selected to give the 68th annual A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2012. | |

She has travelled well beyond the normal compass of the archaeologist; she is expert in the culture of China, the Russian steppes, Persia and Iran and the ancient Greek and Roman world. She wrote a book on the Silk Road, which she has personally travelled. Dr. Knauer has written on such a variety of subjects that only a perusal of the titles of her publications can give an idea of what this scholar can control. Born in Germany, Dr. Knauer earned her Ph.D. from Frankfurt University and is currently a Consulting Scholar in the Mediterranean Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. After three years at the Society of Fellows, Harvard University (1986-9), he joined the Harvard faculty, where he was Professor of History of Art and Architecture until 1999. 1999-2000 he was Professor of Modern Art History at the University of Frankfurt; in 2000 he moved to London, where he was Professor first at University College London (until 2004), then at the Courtauld Institute of Art (until 2007). Koerner organized teaching exhibitions at Harvard on Early Netherlandish Painting (1990), German Renaissance Art (1993), Pieter Bruegel (1995) and Netherlandish prints 1550-1675 (1999). At the Austrian National Gallery in 1997, he curated a retrospective of the work of his father, the painter Henry Koerner. In 2002, he collaborated with Bruno Latour and others on the exhibition Iconoclash: Beyond the Image Wars at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. His books include Die Suche nach dem Labyrinth--Der Mythos von Daedalus und Ikarus (1983), Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape (1990), The Moment of Self-Portraiture in German Renaissance Art (1993), and The Reformation of the Image (2004). Koerner wrote and presented the three-part series Northern Renaissance for BBC Television. He also wrote and presented the BBC feature-length documentary Vienna: City of Dreams. Koerner was awarded the Jan Mitchell Prize for the History of Art in 1992. He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1995. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2008. In 2009 he was award a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation.
