Linda Gordon was Vilas Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Wisconsin until 1999 and is now University Professor of the Humanities and professor of history at NYU. Her PhD was in Russian history and her dissertation was published as Cossack Rebellions: Social Turmoil in the Ukraine (1983). Turning then to US history, her early books focused on the historical roots of social policy issues, particularly as they concern gender and family issues, including Woman's Body, Woman's Right: The History of Birth Control in America (1976), revised edition titled The Moral Property of Women (2002); Heroes of Their Own Lives: The History and Politics of Family Violence; and Pitied But Not Entitled (1988): Single Mothers and the History of Welfare (1994). She then turned to narrative or "microhistory" as a way of illuminating historical developments. Her 1999 book, The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction, the story of a vigilante action against Mexican-Americans, won the Bancroft prize for best book in American history and the Beveridge prize for best book on the history of the Western Hemisphere. Her Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits won a second Bancroft prize, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography, and the National Arts Club prize for best arts writing. She discovered (in archives) unnoticed and never published Lange photographs of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, commissioned and then impounded by the US Army because of their critical perspective; she published these in 2006 as Impounded: Dorothea Lange and Japanese Americans in World War II. Most recently she co-authored Feminism Unfinished: A Short, Surprising History of American Women’s Movements (2014) and edited for Aperture Dorothea Lange: Masters of Photography (2014).

Annette Gordon-Reed is currently Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School and University Professor and Professor of History at Harvard University. She earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1984. She has taught at a number of institutions, including as Wallace Stevens Professor of Law at New York Law School, Board of Governors Professor of History at Rutgers University, and Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. In the vast library of Thomas Jefferson studies, few scholars have done more to challenge received wisdom than Gordon-Reed. Her first book challenged the dominant view that Jefferson could never have engaged in amorous relations with a woman of mixed African-American descent by carefully identifying the inherently racist and psychologically problematic claims that had long rejected this possibility. Gordon-Reed demonstrated that every source of evidence required equally scruplulous examination, and that the oral histories of the Hemings family were just as valuable than what turned out to be the contrived tales of later Jeffersons. The importance of that approach became evident after the 1998 publication of a study indicating that Hemings descendants were genetically linked to the male Jefferson line. Building on that finding, Gordon-Reed’s second book on The Hemingses of Monticello provided a reconstruction of this family’s life that was at once boldly imaginative yet again rigorously grounded in the evidence. The nuanced portrait of Jefferson that has in turn emerged from these two studies, and which is reflected in the book she recently co-authored with Peter Onuf, has made the field of Jefferson studies even more complicated. Annette Gordon-Reed has won a number of awards, including the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2008, the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2009, a MacArthur Fellowship in 2010, and the National Humanities Medal in 2010. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, 2011. Her works include Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy (1998), Race on Trial: Law and Justice in American History (2002), The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family (2008), Andrew Johnson (2011), with Peter S. Onuf "Most Blessed of the Patriarchs": Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination (2016), and On Juneteenth (2021). Loren Graham is professor of the history of science emeritus at MIT and a member of the executive committee of the Davis Center for Russian Studies at Harvard University. Before studying history in graduate school, he worked briefly for the Dow Chemical Company. He received his Ph.D. in history from Columbia University in 1964 and has also studied at Moscow University in the former USSR. He has taught at Indiana University, Columbia, MIT and Harvard. Dr. Graham is the author of over a dozen books, most of them on the history of Russian science. His book Science and Philosophy in the Soviet Union was nominated for the National Book Award. In 1997 he was awarded the George Sarton Medal by the History of Science Society, the highest award given by the organization. He is a foreign member of the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Academy of Humanitarian Sciences in Russia. He also serves as a member of the board of trustees of the European University in St. Petersburg. When not traveling in Russia, Dr. Graham spends his summers in a remote lighthouse on Lake Superior where he writes, using solar power for his computer. Loren Graham was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1995.

Jack P. Greene is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities Emeritus at Johns Hopkins University and the author and editor of 16 books and many articles on early modern colonial British America and the American Revolution. Among his works are Peripheries and Center (1986), which examines the foundations of governance in British America; Pursuits of Happiness (1988), which challenges the notion that American culture was largely a derivative of New England culture; and The Intellectual Construction of America (1993), which investigates the roots of the idea of America as an exceptional place. Dr. Greene's other major works include Imperatives, Behaviors, and Identities: Essays in Early American Cultural History (1992); Negotiated Authorities: Essays in Colonial Political and Constitutional History (1994); Understanding the American Revolution: Issues and Actors (1995); and Interpreting Early America: Historiographical Essays (1996).

Oscar Handlin ranks as one of the most prolific and influential American historians of the twentieth century, with pioneering works in the fields of immigration history, ethnic history, and social history. He began his long career at Harvard University in 1939, becoming a full professor in 1954. At a time when most historians of the U.S. were wholly absorbed by the frontier thesis of Professor F. J. Turner, Dr. Handlin turned his attention to another movement westward: that of Eastern Europeans, many of them Jews, to the United States. Dr. Handlin's best known work, The Uprooted, for which he received the Pulitzer Prize, is to some extent autobiographical. His many other books include The American People in the Twentieth Century; Race and Nationality in American Life; and Boston's Immigrants, 1790-1880. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences; the Massachusetts Historical Society; the Colonial Society of Massachusetts; and the American Jewish Historical Society. Oscar Handlin died on September 20, 2011, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at age 97.

Richard Herr spent his first ten years in Mexico, the son of an American mining engineer. After his family moved to Cincinnati, he attended Walnut Hills High School there and went to Harvard University for an A.B. in history (1943). He served in the U.S. Army Signal Intelligence Corps in Europe, 1943-45, enjoying being stationed in London and then in Paris. At the end of the war he remained in France in order to attend the Sorbonne for a year. While there he married Elena Fernández Mel, a refugee from the Spanish Civil War. They have two sons, Charles and Winship. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1966. In 1968 he married Valerie Shaw. They have two daughters, Sarah and Jane. Dr. Herr prepared a Ph.D. in history at the University of Chicago (1954). From 1952-59 he was a junior faculty member at Yale University, and after 1960 an associate and later full professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley. He retired in 1991, becoming professor of history emeritus. A specialist on the history of France and Spain in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Dr. Herr has spent a number of years in both countries. One of his works is a critical study of Alexis de Tocqueville as a historian. His early research was on the impact of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution on Spanish thought and politics. This subject led him into the evolution of Spanish agriculture at the end of the Old Regime, and he taught and wrote on the agricultural revolution in Europe. His recent work deals with the evolution of individualism and community spirit in the Western world since the eighteenth century, an outgrowth of his continuing interest in the significance of the Enlightenment.

Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of History and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. She is currently the chair of the Department of African and African American Studies and has held this position since 2006. She also served as Acting-Director of Harvard’s W.E. B. Du Bois Institute in the Spring 2008. Professor Higginbotham earned a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in American History, an M.A. from Howard University, and her B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Before coming to Harvard, she taught on the full-time faculties of Dartmouth, the University of Maryland, and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, she was a Visiting Professor at Princeton University and New York University. Professor Higginbotham is most recently co-editor with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., of the African American National Biography (2008), a multivolume-reference work that presents African American history through the lives of people. The AANB holds more than 4,000 individual biographical entries and will later appear as an on-line edition in even more expanded form. She also co-edited with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., African American Lives (2004), which served as the forerunner to the AANB. Professor Higginbotham was the editor-in-chief of The Harvard Guide to African-American History (2001) with general editors Darlene Clark Hine, and Leon Litwack. She also co-edited History and Theory: Feminist Research, Debates and Contestations (1997). Higginbotham is the author of Righteous Discontent: The Women's Movement in the Black Baptist Church: 1880-1920 (1993), which won numerous book prizes, most notably from the American Historical Association, the American Academy of Religion, the Association of Black Women Historians, and the Association for Research on Non-Profit and Voluntary Organizations. Righteous Discontent was also included among the New York Times Book Review’s Notable Books of the Year in 1993 and 1994. Her writings span diverse fields--African American religious history, women's history, civil rights, constructions of racial and gender identity, electoral politics, and the intersection of theory and history. One of her most cited and reprinted articles is "African American Women’s History and the Metalanguage of Race," winner of the best article prize of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians in 1993. Higginbotham has revised and re-written the classic African American history survey From Slavery to Freedom. She is the co-author with the late John Hope Franklin of this book’s ninth edition, published by McGraw Hill in January, 2010. Dr. Higginbotham has received numerous awards. She was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2018. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History awarded her the Carter G. Woodson Scholars Medallion in October 2008, and the Urban League awarded her the Legend Award in August 2008. In April 2008, Unity First honored her for preserving African American History. In March 2005, AOL Black Voices included her among the "Top 10 Black Women in Higher Education." In April 2003 she was chosen by Harvard University to be a Walter Channing Cabot Fellow in recognition of her achievements and scholarly eminence in the field of history. In 2000 she received the YWCA of Boston’s Women of Achievement Award, and in 1994 the Scholar’s Medal of the University of Rochester. Most recently, in 2014, she was awarded the National Humanities Medal.

Gertrude Himmelfarb was distinguished professor of history and later professor emeritus of history at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. For many years she was chair of the doctoral program in history. Dr. Himmelfarb received her doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1950. She also studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary and at Girton College, Cambridge. A leader in the field of 19th century British intellectual history, Dr. Himmelfarb wrote extensively on Victorian England and on contemporary society and culture, earning a reputation as a conservative cultural critic. Her publications included Darwin and the Darwinian Revolution (1959), On Liberty and Liberalism (1974), Poverty and Compassion: The Moral Imagination of the Late Victorians (1991), and The De-Moralization of Society: From Victorian Virtues to Modern Values (1995). She also edited a collection of essays by Irving Kristol, entitled The Neoconservative Persuasion: Selected Essays, 1942-2009 (2011). She was the recipient of many honorary degrees and a Fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Historical Society, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and the Society of American Humanities. She served on the Council of the National Endowment for the Humanities and on the editorial boards of the American Historical Review, the American Scholar and other journals. Known for her great erudition and meticulous scholarship, Dr. Himmelfarb was a gifted writer and thinker who expressed her strong opinions with force and clarity. Gertrude Himmelfarb died December 30, 2019 in Washington, DC at the age of 97.

Elizabeth Hinton is Associate Professor in the Department of History and the Department of African American Studies at Yale University, with a secondary appointment as Professor of Law at Yale Law School. Considered one of the nation’s leading experts on criminalization and policing, Hinton’s research focuses on the persistence of poverty, racial inequality, and urban violence in the 20th century United States. In her first book, From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime: The Making of Mass Incarceration in America (Harvard University Press), Hinton examines the implementation of federal law enforcement programs beginning in the mid-1960s that transformed domestic social policies and laid the groundwork for the expansion of U.S. policing and prison regimes. From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime received numerous awards and recognition, including the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award from the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Her recent book, America on Fire: The Untold History of Police Violence and Black Rebellion Since the 1960s (Liveright 2021), won a Robert F. Kennedy book award. America on Fire provides a new framework for understanding the problem of police abuse and the broader, systemic repression of Black people and other people of color in post-civil rights America. Both From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime and American on Fire were named New York TimesH Notable books. Before joining the Yale faculty, Hinton was a Professor in the Department of History and the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. She spent two years as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows and Assistant Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan. A Ford Foundation and Carnegie Corporation Fellow, Hinton completed her Ph.D. in United States History from Columbia University in 2013. Hinton’s articles and op-eds can be found in the pages of Science, the Journal of American History, the Journal of Urban History, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, New York Magazine, The Boston Review, The Nation, and Time. From the time of my first publication in 1968, I have worked primarily in the intellectual and ethnoracial histories of the United States. Thematically, my work has been inspired by an essay of 1967 by the great sinologist, Joseph R. Levenson, "The Province, the Nation, the World: The Problem of Chinese Identity." I read this as a graduate student. It led me to engage the tension between provincialism and cosmopolitanism. This tension I have explored in special relation to ethnoracial and religious affiliations. For many years I focused on the relation of Jews to American culture, and later moved to a focus on the varieties of Protestantism and their differing connections to the American nation. Central always has been the diversity of American society, and the challenge Americans have faced in deciding just whom to join with in the forming of communities. Methodologically, my work has been inspired by the scholarship of Perry Miller, the great historian of New England Puritanism, and by the scholarly practices of medievalists. Both of these affected me in graduate school, at the same time I was reading Levenson. Miller showed me what intellectual history could be like, and the medievalists showed me what highly specialized, monographic scholarship on what the Germans call "advanced problems" looked like. I decided early on to try to write modern American history as it would be written by a medievalist. Hence I have written primarily analytic articles in the medievalist manner, focusing on this or that question (e.g., the question of ethnoracial mixture, or the problem of pragmatism). I have aimed not to tell stories, but to answer questions. In keeping with this commitment to the analytic essay as a mode, I published many articles and relatively few book-length studies. This approach to research and writing appealed to me also because it enabled me to address a greater range of topics than if I had followed the normal path for historians, moving from one Big Book to another. Hence four of my books are collections of articles: In the American Province (Indiana University Press, 1985), Science, Jews, and Secular Culture (Princeton University Press, 1996), Cosmopolitanism and Solidarity (University of Wisconsin Press, 2006), and After Cloven Tongues of Fire (Princeton University Press, 2013). But I also wrote three more conventionally "book-like" books: Morris R. Cohen and the Scientific Ideal (MIT Press, 1975), Postethnic America (Basic Books, 1995, 2000, and 2006), and Protestants Abroad: How Missionaries Tried to Change the World but Changed America (Princeton University Press, 2017). My entire career has been influenced by the experience of moving out of the church-intensive culture of my upbringing and finding myself more at home in the more or less standard, highly secular culture of the academic life of my generation. I have discussed this experience in an autobiographical essay, "Church People and Others," found within the collection, After Cloven Tongues of Fire.

Currently the James Westfall Thompson Distinguished Service Professor of American and African American History at the University of Chicago, Tom Holt has a longstanding professional interest in comparing the experiences of people in the African diaspora, particularly those in the Caribbean and the United States. Elected president of the American Historical Association for 1994-95, Holt has been a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellow since 1990 and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2003. Last year Holt was a recipient the Wilbur Cross Medal, awarded by Yale University in recognition of distinguished alumni. His most significant publications are a study of Jamaica's economy, politics, and society after slavery, The Problem of Freedom: Race, Labor, and Politics in Jamaica and Britain, 1832-1938, which was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 1992 and awarded the Elsa Goveia Prize by the Association of Caribbean Historians in 1995. In 1978, the Southern Historical Association awarded the Charles S. Sydnor Prize for Holt's first book, Black Over White: Negro Political Leadership in South Carolina During Reconstruction, published by the University of Illinois Press in 1977, which dealt with a comparable period in the American South after emancipation. Holt's Nathan I. Huggins’ lectures, The Problem of Race in the 21st Century, were published by Harvard University Press in 2000. He is co-author with Rebecca J. Scott and Frederick Cooper of Beyond Slavery: Explorations of Race, Labor, and Citizenship in Postemancipation Societies, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press, also in 2000. With Elsa Barkley Brown, he has edited a two-volume collection of essays and documents on African American History, Major Problems in African American History, published by Houghton Mifflin in 2000. In 2010, Holt published Children of Fire: A History of African Americans (Hill&Wang), a synthetic account of African American History from its 16th century beginnings to the present. Holt’s most recent publication is Race, the 24th volume of the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture (2013), which he edited with Laurie Green for the University of North Carolina Press. In that collection of essays, they explore the multi-racial - as opposed to the more conventional bi-racial - history and present of the American South. Prof. Holt is currently working on a study of the Civil Rights Movement for Oxford University Press and on a study of the problem of race in the Atlantic World with Leora Auslander. Professor Holt earned BA and MA degrees in English Literature from Howard University and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. Prior to his academic career Holt worked in the federal anti-poverty program (the Office of Economic Opportunity) developing educational, employment, and housing programs for economically disadvantaged seasonal and migrant farmworkers.

Gerald Holton is Mallinckrodt Research Professor of Physics and Research Professor of the History of Science Emeritus at Harvard University. He obtained his Ph.D. in physics at Harvard as a student of P. W. Bridgman. His chief interests are in the history and philosophy of science, in the physics of matter at high pressure, and in the study of career paths of young scientists. Among his recent books are Thematic Origins of Scientific Thought (2nd ed., 1988); Science and Anti-Science (1993); Einstein, History, and Other Passions (2000); The Advancement of Science, and its Burdens (1998); The Scientific Imagination (1998); four books with Gerhard Sonnert: Gender Differences in Science Careers: Project Access Study (1995), Who Succeeds in Science? Professor Holton is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Life Honorary Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of several Learned Societies in Europe. Founding editor of the quarterly journal Daedalus, and founder of Science, Society, & Human Values, he was also on the editorial committee of the Collected Papers of Albert Einstein (Princeton University Press). Thomas Hughes received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1953. He served on the faculty of Washington and Lee University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The Johns Hopkins University, and Southern Methodist University before joining the University of Pennsylvania faculty in 1973 where he became Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus of History and Sociology of Science. He had also been Distinguished Visiting Professor of the History of Technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Thomas Hughes was considered the dean of American historians of technology. His versatility and style appear in Elmer Sperry, Inventor and Engineer (1971), a definitive biography that incorporates the technical detail required for the life of an engineer; Networks of Power, Electification of Western Society, 1880-1930 (1983), a comparative history of German and American electric power systems conceived as integrations of technical, managerial and financial networks; and American Genesis, A Century of Invention and Technological Enthusiasm, 1870-1970 (1989, 1990), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, a portrayal of the heroic century of American invention for a wide readership. Dr. Hughes' work on systems and his book on cultural history show the same breadth and mastery. He served his profession and the public as a teacher, as a member of several national committees, and as a creator of television documentaries. Dr. Hughes' other books include (with A. Hughes) Lewis Memford: Public Intellectual (1990); Rescuing Prometheus (Managing the Creation of Large Technological Systems) (1997); (with A. Hughes) Systems, Experts, and Computers (2000); and Human-Built World: How to Think about Technology and Culture (2004). He was the recipient of the Leonardo da Vinci Medal (1984), the John Desmond Bernal Prize from the Society for Social Studies of Science (1990), and a two-time recepient of the Dexter Prize of Society for the History of Technology (for Elmer Sperry and Networks of Power). He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and held honorary degrees from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and from Northwestern University. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2003. Thomas Hughes died February 3, 2014, at the age of 90, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Lynn Hunt is an extraordinarily gifted, imaginative, and tough-minded scholar, the author of a boldly conceived set of eight interlocking books on the French Revolution, gender history, cultural history and historiography. Her books have been translated into French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Portuguese, Chinese and Polish. Her best known book, The Family Romance of the French Revolution, shows how the revolutionaries destroyed the paternal image of King Louis XVI by pornographic attacks on Queen Marie Antoniette and then, having liberated themselves from the royal family, created a new model of domesticity. Her latest works are Inventing Human Rights: A History (2007), the question of time and history writing, Measuring Time: Making History (2008), and early 18th century views of the world's religions, Bernard Picart and the First Global Vision of Religion (with M. Jacob and W. Mijnhardt, 2010). Her current research projects include a study of cultural history in the global era and another of the French Revolution in global context. Lynn Hunt has served as president of the American Historical Association and is currently Distinguished Professor of History and Eugen Weber Professor of Modern European History at the University of California, Los Angeles (1998-). She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1973) and has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley (1974-87) and the University of Pennsylvania (1987-98).

Margaret Jacob received her Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1968. She was an assistant professor of history and languages and literature at the University of South Florida, Tampa, and a lecturer in European history at the University of East Anglia, UK, before becoming professor of history at Baruch College, City University of New York, in1971. She became dean of the Eugene Lang College and professor of history in the university in 1985 at the New School for Social Research. In 1996 she moved to the University of Pennsylvania as professor of history and of the history of science. She is currently Distinguished Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. A leading international authority on the interaction of science, commerce, and technology and how they contributed to the industrial revolution of the early 19th century. Dr. Jacob is the author of many books and innumerable articles. She works with English, French, Belgian, and Dutch sources. A former president of the American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies, she is also a prominent academic leader. At UCLA, she has spearheaded a pathbreaking research project bringing scientists and humanists together to study chronic pain. Martin Jay is currently Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of History Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1971 before beginning his career at Berkeley. Martin Jay is his generation’s most respected and influential scholar of European intellectual history. His fifteen books are read not only by historians, but by artists, museum curators, literary scholars, and philosophers. Jay combines a deep understanding of theoretical questions – about vision, truth, totality, and experience – with an extraordinary ability to interpret in accessible language the answers to these questions articulated by French and German thinkers, whose prose many readers find obscure. Jay’s scholarship endures: a book of more than forty years ago, now translated into fourteen languages, remains the standard work on the Frankfurt School. Michael B. Katz is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History and Research Associate in the Population Studies Center at the History Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Educated at Harvard, he has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a resident fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies (Princeton), the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; he also has held a fellowship from the Open Society Institute. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Education, National Academy of Social Insurance, and the Society of American Historians. In 1999, he received a Senior Scholar Award - a lifetime achievement award - from the Spencer Foundation. From 1989-1995, he served as archivist to the Social Science Research Council's Committee for Research on the Urban Underclass and in 1992 was a member of the Task Force to Reduce Welfare Dependency appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania. From 1991-1995 and 2011-2012, he was Chair of the History Department at the University of Pennsylvania; from 1983-1996 he directed or co-directed the University’s undergraduate Urban Studies Program; in 1994, he founded the graduate certificate program in Urban Studies, which he co-directs. Donald R. Kelley was born in Elgin, Illinois in 1931 of working-class parents. He worked himself for a time at the Elgin Watch Co., then went to Harvard University (class of 1953). He served in the army as an MP in Germany (1953-55) before going on to graduate school at Columbia University (Ph.D., 1962). Since his undergraduate days his main interest has been European intellectual history, beginning with early modern France, on which he has written several books. He has since extended his research to a larger chronological and international scope, reinforced by a 20-year editorship of the Journal of the History of Ideas and associated international conferences funded by the journal. He has worked in three interrelated areas of study, all touched on in his first book on "language, law, and history in the French Renaissance"; that is, western historical thought and writing; continental law and political thought since antiquity; and the history and role of language. Most recently he has returned to early interests in the history of history, completing a trilogy in western historiography from antiquity to the present and surveys both of intellectual and cultural history. Dr. Kelley has taught at Southern Illinois University, SUNY Binghamton, the University of Rochester, Harvard, and Rutgers University, where he holds the title of James Westfall Thompson Professor of History Emeritus. He has received a number of awards, including a Fulbright and two Guggenheim fellowships and three Institute for Advanced Study fellowships as well as membership in the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He is married to Bonnie Smith, also a historian; they have three children.
