Professor Emeritus at the University of Vienna, Manfred Mayrhofer is a noted Indo-Europeanist specializing in Indo-Iranian languages. Renowned for his etymological dictionary of Sanskrit, he studied Indo-European and Semitic linguistics along with philosophy at the University of Graz, Austria, which awarded him a Ph.D. in 1951. Social anthropologist Chie Nakane is a respected scholar who has spent a lifetime studying human societies and chronicling her theories. One of the first women to graduate from the University of Tokyo, Ms. Nakane was the University's first female professor and the first female member of the Japan Academy. Now a professor emeritus, she traces her profound interest in social anthropology to her teenage years when she returned to Japan after living in China and was struck by the cultural and social differences between the two countries. After receiving her M.A. in 1950, she embarked on a career investigating Asian societies, including those of Japan, India, China and her special area of expertise, Tibet. In 1987, she won a Japan Foundation Award for this comparative research. Ms. Nakane's incisive study of Japan is presented in her seminal book, Japanese Society, which offers insight into what distinguishes Japanese society from other complex societies. Published in 1970, the book characterizes Japan as being built on a vertical organizational principle where a hierarchical order based on rank prevails. One of the world's great archaeologists, Jean J.F. Perrot directed French archaeological missions throughout Iran, Palestine and southwestern Asia during his distinguished career. Among his many accomplishments, Perrot pioneered the recovery and interpretation of background evidence concerning the appearance of a food-producing way of life in southwestern Asia 10,000 years ago, and his brilliant excavations at the open air settlement of Mallaha in northern Israel in effect brought the early Natufians out of caves and into the beginning of village life. His career was interrupted for a period when he was asked to take over work at the great site of Susa in Iran, but Perrot would later happily return to the Levant to continue his work there. Given his wide familiarity with much of the early Near East, Jean J.F. Perrot is held in high esteem for his thoughtful and informed cultural-historical interpretations. He joined the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in 1946 and later became its director. Colin Renfrew is one of the most influential and renowned archaeologists in the world today. From his important excavations in Greece and the Aegean - at Saliagos, Melos, and Sitagroi - and the influential publications on this research that followed, to his research on the Orkneys in northern Scotland, he has played a leading role in world archaeology for more than three decades. He is the author of the path-breaking books The Emergence of Civilization: The Cyclades and the Aegean in the Third Millennium B.C. and Before Civilization: the Radiocarbon Revolution and Prehistoric Europe in the early 1970s, which had profound impacts on scholarly understanding of Aegean and European prehistory. He has also made numerous contributions to archaeological theory and method, such as his early research on trace element analysis of obsidian and trade and his formulations on peer polity interaction and the rise of political complexity, to his pioneering work in cognitive, social and linguistic archaeology. With his elevation to a life peerage and a seat in the House of Lords, Lord Renfrew also has been able to play an important political role in furthering the role of arts and culture in the United Kingdom and in combating the ravages of archaeological looting. Lord Renfrew received his Sc.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1976 and has been Disney Professor of Archaeology Emeritus there since 2004. French historian Georges le Rider was a professor at the Collège de France, a member of l'Institut de France and a specialist in Greek numismatics. Born in Saint-Hernin in 1928, he became a member of the French School of Athens in 1952 and of the French Institute of Archaeology in Beirut in 1955. In 1958 he began his career at the Bibliothèque Nationale, where he would serve as conservator and director of the department of medals, currencies and antiques. In 1975 he was named General Administrator of the Bibliothèque Nationale. He served in this capacity until 1981 when he assumed direction of the French Institute of Anatolian Studies in Istanbul. Georges le Rider also served as a professor at the University of Lille and as director of the CNRS research group. At the Collège de France he focused on economic and monetary history. His published works include the three volume "Etudes d'histoire monetaire et financiere du monde grec. Ecrits 1958-1998," (with François de Callatay) "Séleucides and Ptolémées: The Monetary and Financial Heritage of Alexander the Great" (2006), and Alexander the Great: Coinage, Finance and Policy (2007). Daniel Roche is a Professor at the Collège de France. In his career as teacher and scholar, Daniel Roche has been one of the greatest forces in the renewal of historical studies over the last thirty years. Jacqueline de Romilly was an authority on ancient Greek, having studied mainly the history of political and moral ideas in the fifth century B.C. Born in Chartres, France in 1913, she had been a professor at the University of Lille and at the Sorbonne and chair of Greek and the formation of moral and political thought at the Collège de France. In 1975 she became the first woman elected to the Académie des Inscripitons et Belles-Lettres, the learned society devoted to the humanities and part of the Institut de France, and in 1988, she became the second woman to enter the Académie Française. Professor de Romilly is the author of numerous books, including Time in Greek Tragedy (1968), Magic and Rhetoric in Ancient Greece (1975) and The Rise and Fall of States According to Greek Authors (1991). In addition to her works on ancient Greece, she wrote a novel and several collections of short stories, a travel book on Provence and several volumes of memoirs. Internationally prominent, she obtained Greek nationality in 1995 and was nominated ambassador to Greece in 2000. She had been elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1978. | |
