Jakob Lothe is professor of English literature at the University of Oslo. Combined with this position, he has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Bergen. He has been an invited visiting scholar at St. John’s College, University of Oxford (1996-1997), Harvard University (2005), University of Cape Town (2010), and Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford (2017-2018). Lothe’s main research interest is narrative theory and analysis. He has developed an original method that combines constituent elements of classical narratology, rhetorical narrative theory, narrative hermeneutics, memory studies, and studies of the narrative ethics of fiction and film. In his current work, Lothe aims to improve our understanding of the ethics of storytelling, while at the same time highlighting the key role of the ethics which readers and viewers take with them to the act, and experience, of reading and viewing. His books include Conrad’s Narrative Method (Oxford UP, 1989), Narrative in Fiction and Film (Oxford UP, 2000), and, as editor or co-editor, Joseph Conrad (Ohio State UP, 2008), Franz Kafka (Ohio State UP, 2011), After Testimony: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Holocaust Narrative for the Future (Ohio State UP, 2012), Narrative Ethics (Rodopi, 2013), Time’s Witnesses: Women’s Voices from the Holocaust (Fledgling Press, 2017), and The Future of Literary Studies (Novus Press, 2017). Lothe is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and the leader of the Academy’s committee on human rights. A Professor of the History of Italian Law Emeritus, Domenico Maffei had served on the faculty of the University of Rome since 1979. He received his D. Juris from the University of Siena in 1947, where he was also professor of Italian law from 1961-69. Dr. Maffei has also taught law at the University of Macerata (1955-61) and Italian culture at the University of California, Berkeley (1967-68). A leader in medieval history (with a book on the donation of Constantine) and legal history (with studies of contract law), Dr. Maffei ably related jurisprudence to both social and intellectual history. His many books include Gli inizi dell'Umanesimo giurdico (1956) and Il giovane Machiavelli banchiere con Berto Berti a Roma (1973). Professor Maffei died in July 2009 at the age of 84 in Italy. | |

Avishai Margalit is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has done important philosophical work on language, rationality, politics, and morality. Though he uses analytical methods, he is notable within analytic philosophy for drawing on the complexity of historical examples and cultural context. One of his most significant contributions is his argument that politics focuses on avoiding evil rather than pursuing the good, and thus that the goal of a decent society that is free of humiliation is prior to the goal of the just society. Hans Eberhard Mayer is Professor of Medieval and Modern History Emeritus at the University of Kiel, Germany, where he has taught since 1967. Professor Emeritus at the University of Vienna, Manfred Mayrhofer is a noted Indo-Europeanist specializing in Indo-Iranian languages. Renowned for his etymological dictionary of Sanskrit, he studied Indo-European and Semitic linguistics along with philosophy at the University of Graz, Austria, which awarded him a Ph.D. in 1951. Social anthropologist Chie Nakane is a respected scholar who has spent a lifetime studying human societies and chronicling her theories. One of the first women to graduate from the University of Tokyo, Ms. Nakane was the University's first female professor and the first female member of the Japan Academy. Now a professor emeritus, she traces her profound interest in social anthropology to her teenage years when she returned to Japan after living in China and was struck by the cultural and social differences between the two countries. After receiving her M.A. in 1950, she embarked on a career investigating Asian societies, including those of Japan, India, China and her special area of expertise, Tibet. In 1987, she won a Japan Foundation Award for this comparative research. One of the world's great archaeologists, Jean J.F. Perrot directed French archaeological missions throughout Iran, Palestine and southwestern Asia during his distinguished career. Among his many accomplishments, Perrot pioneered the recovery and interpretation of background evidence concerning the appearance of a food-producing way of life in southwestern Asia 10,000 years ago, and his brilliant excavations at the open air settlement of Mallaha in northern Israel in effect brought the early Natufians out of caves and into the beginning of village life. His career was interrupted for a period when he was asked to take over work at the great site of Susa in Iran, but Perrot would later happily return to the Levant to continue his work there. Given his wide familiarity with much of the early Near East, Jean J.F. Perrot is held in high esteem for his thoughtful and informed cultural-historical interpretations. He joined the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in 1946 and later became its director. Colin Renfrew is one of the most influential and renowned archaeologists in the world today. From his important excavations in Greece and the Aegean - at Saliagos, Melos, and Sitagroi - and the influential publications on this research that followed, to his research on the Orkneys in northern Scotland, he has played a leading role in world archaeology for more than three decades. He is the author of the path-breaking books The Emergence of Civilization: The Cyclades and the Aegean in the Third Millennium B.C. and Before Civilization: the Radiocarbon Revolution and Prehistoric Europe in the early 1970s, which had profound impacts on scholarly understanding of Aegean and European prehistory. He has also made numerous contributions to archaeological theory and method, such as his early research on trace element analysis of obsidian and trade and his formulations on peer polity interaction and the rise of political complexity, to his pioneering work in cognitive, social and linguistic archaeology. With his elevation to a life peerage and a seat in the House of Lords, Lord Renfrew also has been able to play an important political role in furthering the role of arts and culture in the United Kingdom and in combating the ravages of archaeological looting. Lord Renfrew received his Sc.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1976 and has been Disney Professor of Archaeology Emeritus there since 2004.
