Andrew Balmford is Professor of Conservation Science in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, where his research focuses on how to reconcile biodiversity conservation with meeting human food needs and other land-demanding activities, and on the costs and benefits of retaining intact ecosystems. He collaborates closely with conservation practitioners and with colleagues in other disciplines including economics, agriculture and psychology. Andrew helped establish the Student Conference on Conservation Science, the Cambridge Conservation Forum, Earth Optimism, and most recently the Cambridge Centre for Carbon Credits. Jean-Michel Dubernard is a surgeon in the Department of Urology and Transplantation Surgery at E. Herriot Hospital in Lyon. He is also a former Deputy Mayor of Lyon and a former member of the French National Assembly.
Dr. Dubernard attended medical school in Lyon. He then served as a Research Fellow with Joseph Murray at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (1965-1967) in Boston. Dr. Dubernard received his Docteur en Medecine from Lyon University in 1967. He subsequently received his Docteur en Biologie Humaine in Transplantation Immunology in 1971. As a surgeon, Dr. Dubernard is an important pioneer. His research interests continue to lie in experimental surgery, clinical transplantation (especially renal transplantation in children), medical technology, general urology, renal and pancreatic lithotripsy, endoscopy of the upper urinary tract investigations of male impotence, vascular surgery and microsurgery. In 1998 he led the international team that performed the world’s first modern hand-forearm transplant and in 2005 Dr. Dubernard's team performed the world’s first partial face transplant.
Dr. Dubernard is the President of the International Hand and Composite Tissue Allografts, as well as the Founder and President of the European College of Transplantation. Since 1980 he has been a member of the European Society for Organ Transplantation’s Founding Council. Dr. Dubernard was President of the International Microsurgical Society (1984-1986), President of the Société Française de Transplantation (1991-1994), and President of the International Pancreatic and Islet Transplant Association (1996-1997). His work has more than 400 scientific references in the form of articles, chapters of books, books, and films. Andrew Duncan (17 October 1744–5 July 1828) was a physician and member of the American Philosophical Society, elected in 1774. Born in Pinkerton, Scotland to merchant and shipmaster Andrew Duncan and his wife Catherine, Duncan pursued an education at St. Andrews University, earning a MA degree in 1762. Later that year he went on to study medicine at Edinburgh University. He served as president of the Royal Medical Society in 1767 before traveling to China as a surgeon on the East India Trading Company ship, Asia. He turned down a lucrative offer to make a second journey to instead begin lecturing at St. Andrews. He earned his MD to that end in 1769, and became a licentiate of the Edinburgh College of Physicians the following year. That year he also published his first work, Elements of Therapeutics. In 1776, he began teaching a course on chronic diseases, leading him to found a public dispensary that provided free medicine and medical advice to the poor (later the Royal Public Dispensary). Meanwhile, he also founded the Aesculapian Club and later the Harveian Club in 1782, both of which provided him with the necessary connections to begin publishing his journal of medicine, Medical and Philosophical Commentaries. In 1790 he served as president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and two years later proposed the construction of a public mental asylum which was then built in 1807. The following year, he was decorated with the Freedom of Edinburgh for his work on the asylum as well as his dispensary. In 1821, he was made First Physician to the King in Scotland and was elected president of the Edinburgh Medical Chirurgical Society. Jack Dunitz's research interests concentrated on the use of crystal structure analysis as a tool for studying a diversity of chemical problems, such as the structure and reactivity of medium-ring compounds, ion-specificity of natural and synthetic ionophores, and molecular structure-energy relationships. From his laboratory came the method of deriving model pathways for prototypic chemical reactions from the structural information in crystal structures, thus making a connection between the "statics" of crystals and the "dynamics" of reacting chemical systems. Other work in related directions included new interpretations of atomic displacement tensors in crystals in terms of internal molecular motions, and studies of experimental electron density distributions from accurate low-temperature X-ray data. Later in his career, he turned to problems of polymorphism, phase transformations in solids and solid-state chemical reactions. Dr. Dunitz studied chemistry at Glasgow University (Ph.D. 1947) and held research fellowship at Oxford University (1946-1948, 1951-1953), the California Institute of Technology (1948-1951, 1953-1954), the U.S. National Institute of Health (1954-1955) and the Royal Institution, London (1956-1957) before accepting a professorship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1957. He held that post until his retirement in 1990, when he became Emeritus Professor of Chemical Crystallography. Dr. Dunitz been elected to membership of several learned societies, including the Royal Society (1974) and has received several awards for his work. In 2001 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has more than 300 scientific papers to his credit and is the author of "X-Ray Analysis and the Structure of Organic Molecules" (1979) and "Reflections on Symmetry in Chemistry... and Elsewhere" (1993). Born in England in 1952, John Dupré is a philosopher of science, specialising in the philosophy of biology, and a naturalistic metaphysician. He received his PhD from Cambridge in 1981, also spending two years on a Harkness Fellowship as a visiting PhD student at Princeton and Stanford. He taught at Stanford University from 1982-1996, since when he has been at the University of Exeter. At Exeter he restarted the philosophy programme that had been closed in the 1980s, and in 2002 became the founding Director of Egenis, the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society, now the Centre for the Study of Life Sciences. Egenis is now internationally known as a centre for interdisciplinary research on the life sciences. Dupré’s 1993 book, The Disorder of Things: Metaphysical Foundations of the Disunity of Science, provided an influential critique of the essentialism, reductionism and determinism then still prevalent in post-positivist philosophy of science. In Human Nature and the Limits of Science (2001), he developed a detailed critique of reductive theories of human nature, especially as presented by Evolutionary Psychology. Since the mid-2000s, his work has focused on developing a radically processual account of the life sciences, first articulated in his Spinoza Lectures at the University of Amsterdam in 2006, and most recently extended to an interpretation of the nature of the human in his Gifford Lectures in Edinburgh in 2023. He has published numerous articles and books on these topics, and on evolution, genomics, values in science, race and gender, and a range of related issues in the philosophy of biology. Dupré was President of the Philosophy of Science Association for 2000-2002. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Jorge Durand is a Visiting Professor at Princeton University, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Guadalajara, México, and Co-Director, with Douglas S.
