 Title:  Samuel Coates receipt book, 1804-1829

 Abstract:  The Samuel Coates Collection consists largely of business records of Samuel Coates, a prominent Philadelphia merchant. Coates' large account book for 1803-1830 contains a range of financial transactions both personal and professional that may lend insight into business and trade in early nineteenth century Philadelphia. The collection also includes Coates' day book, which records day-to-day meetings, and two volumes of Coates' financial dealings with the Bank of North America between 1788 and 1798. Coates was he later elected a director of the Bank in 1800. In addition to Coates' own material there is an account book of Deborah Morris, which contains a very detailed will and probate records. The will describes in detail how and to whom her belongings should be distributed and is more detailed than most wills.

 Abstract:  The John Mifflin receipt book is a fairly straight forward collection. Mifflin had some involvement in financing the Pike Expedition, some record of which is in the transactions of the receipt book. He was also a prominent Philadelphian. As such, names of other prominent Philadelphians with whom he conducted business are recorded. The Mifflin receipt book is unusual in one respect. Occasionally, Mifflin provides hisotrical details on his property.

 Abstract:  This collection contains 121 stock and bond certificates for companies, most of which are railroad companies. The bonds are notable for having engraved depictions of locomotives on them. There is also at least one that is signed by Cornelius Vanderbilt. The majority of the certificates date to the late-nineteenth century.

Reynell's business interests seem focused on the West Indies trade, and he records shipments and sales of sugar, indigo, and other goods to Philadelphians.

 Abstract:  These three volumes contain the business records of the Binny and Ronaldson type foundry that operated in Philadelphia for the years 1796-1801. Archibald Binny and James Ronaldson established the first type foundry in America in 1796. Binny was trained and worked in Scotland as a punchcutter before setting off for Philadelphia in 1796. There he met a fellow Scot, James Ronaldson, who provided the business background to launch the firm. Binny and Ronaldson printed the first dollar marks in 1797 and in 1806 purchased the remnants of Benjamin Franklin's press operations.
