| | | | Dates: | 1777 - 1778 | | | | Abstract: | Although the record states that this bound volume contains the proceedings of the controversial Admiralty Courts for New Hampshire, the court cases brought before it cover all of New England, especially Massachusetts. The records in this volume date from 1775 to 1778 and involve a single case brought against Elisha Doane from Wellfleet. A variety of evidence is included in this case, including copies of letters, cargo manifests, depositions, and court proceedings. The case appears to have continued until 1778. The last page is signed by Charles Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress, who reports that the case files were sent to him, but he does not know why.

| | | | Dates: | 1745-1878 | | | | Abstract: | The Cassin Collection is heavily focused on Charles Luke Cassin's correspondence in the late nineteenth century. Charles Cassin was a physician in the U.S. Navy in the late-nineteenth century. His family's roots date to the colonial era. There are approximately seven documents from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, however. This portion of the collection includes three legal documents from colonial Pennsylvania that were likely handed down through the family: one is a will for Aaron Thompson dated 1745, another is an indenture from 1758, and another is a copy of a court decision in Berks County in 1774. There are two letters from James Mullins to Eliza Cassin relating to their past affairs and children. Finally, there are official documents relating to Joseph Cassin, Charles Luke's father, including a commission in the U.S. Navy signed by James Madison.

This collection adds primary source materials to the H.J. Williams collection, which consists of genealogical material on the Williams family. Jonathan Williams was one of Benjamin Franklin's nephews. He attained high positions in the United States military and helped found West Point. The bulk of Jonathan Williams's papers contain letters from William Alexander to Jonathan Williams. Alexander was his father-in-law. Topics discussed include business, legal, and of course family affairs.
