	Abstract:	"L'Oeil du Maitre" is a treatise on governance written by Pierre Berny, a well-known Frenchman in the eighteenth century. During the Seven Years' War, he served in Germany. After retiring in 1757, he established a school in Brussels and gained a reputation as a master draftsman. Berny sent this manuscript to Benjamin Franklin in February 1778, when Franklin was in France as the American envoy. This bound volume, although handwritten, is formatted in such a way as to give this essay the appearance of a pamphlet. View finding aid for a full description

The first, "Historical Sketch of the Continental Bills of Credit, from 1775 to 1781, with Specimens thereof" (332.5 B74h), is a long manuscript essay on Continental Bills of credit from 1775 – 1781, which reflects Breck's interest in historical matters. 	Title:	Revolutionary War letter

	Abstract:	This long letter, dated January 6, 1777, discussed contentions within a Presbyterian Synod in Lonehead, Scotland. Although there may be some vague references to the American Revolution, the content of the letter is primarily aimed at the Synod and its policies. The letter criticizes the current minister and opposes the King's request for a fast day. 	Title:	Henry Marchant diary, 1771-1772

	Abstract:	This is a typescript copy of Henry Marchant's journal that he kept on his trip to England in 1771-1772. The journal begins with his voyage from Newport to England and continues throughout his travels in England. The journal is detailed and well-written and contains many anecdotes and observations, including numerous references to Benjamin Franklin, who was then himself in London. Marchant's social gatherings are particularly noteworthy. He recounts a discussion of republican principles with Catherine Macauley, dinners with Franklin and David Hume, and an audience with the Queen and Prince of Wales. Included in the documents are notes on Common Sense, letters on courtship and love, the American Revolution, and letters relating to his time in France after the Revolution. 	Abstract:	This extensive collection (13 boxes) contains a range of correspondence, although the bulk of it relates to Charles Nicoll Bancker, a prominent Philadelphia businessman in the 1800s. The letters provide a picture of the family life and business career of Bancker from his earliest beginnings to his success later in life. Aside from the Charles Bancker portion of the collection, the holdings contain a wide variety of other documents, ranging from colonial era documents written in Dutch in Albany to letters from James Madison to Thomas Jefferson from the nineteenth century on religious education.
