The correspondence is separated into three distinct parts: general correspondence, correspondence with Augustin Pyramus de Candole (a Swiss botanist), and correspondence with John Quincy Adams. The copies of his writings consist of manuscript essays, notebooks, lectures, and other materials that discuss various scientific topics, especially botany.

The cover is ornamentally decorated in ink, some of which is colored. The text contains a section on geometry and trigonometry that includes many diagrams and calculations. The second part contains information on fortification and military sciences, some of which seems to apply the mathematics of the previous section to artillery and fortification design. The section on fortifications contains drawings and sketches of forts.

The accounts do not contain much detail aside from the amount of funds Hart received for fines, taxes, and other fees that he then transferred to the state treasury. The data may complement some of the lieutenant and treasury data contained in the Pennsylvania Archives, however.
