The John Lawrence LeConte Collection contains a vast array of material. John Lawrence LeConte, son of John Eatton LeConte, was a scientist whose interests, like his father's, were in natural history, especially entomology. Like his father, J.L. LeConte undertook many scientific expeditions, primarily to the Midwest region. He is known as the "father of American beetle study" because of his entomological work. With over 1,900 documents, the collection touches on a wide range of scientific topics and includes correspondence from many of the most prominent scientists and citizens of the day. The vast majority of the scientific discussions – indeed the vast majority of the collection in general – deals with entomology. The LeConte's were both active in many scientific institutions, many based in Philadelphia, and the history of these institutions can also be gleaned from some of their correspondence.

| | | | Dates: | 1832-1853 | | | | Abstract: | Isaac Lea was a Philadelphia based geologist and publisher. He was primarily a publisher, founding the firm Lea and Febiger, which had its origins in Matthew Carey's publishing house. Isaac married Carey's daughter Frances Anne in 1821. Always interested in science, in 1851, after retiring from the day-to-day operations of his printing firm, he dedicated his time to geology and other scientific interests. This collection contains the journals of Isaac Lea's trips to Europe in 1832 and 1852-53. Lea traveled to Europe to become acquainted with European ideas and methods, although both trips – especially the earlier one – included much sightseeing. Very much a gentleman scientist, Lea gained wide-respect for his knowledge and work, earning an honorary doctorate from Harvard. These travel journals provide insight into some of the people and practices he encountered in Europe that may have shaped his ideas about science.

The collection consists of a series of documents relating to the robbery of Arthur Lee's papers in Berlin, most likely by an English agent. The documents are in both German and French. The documents include depositions and interviews that cast the blame for the theft on an English agent and a servant. Information on this event can be found in the Franklin Papers and The Life of Arthur Lee.

| | | | Dates: | 1766-1823 | | | | Abstract: | This collection of Richard Henry Lee correspondence is most notable for its rich content relating to the movement for Independence, military matters during the war, and the politics of ratification and the early republic. Because much of the correspondence is incoming, the letters offer insight into a wide range of other topics – and snapshots of events happening in areas beyond Lee's home state of Virginia. Frequent correspondents during the revolutionary era include John Dickinson, Samuel Adams, Benjamin Rush, and George Washington, among others. Almost all of these letters contain discussions of politics that offer significant insight into the letter writer's political thought and rich details on events happening throughout British America. Among Rush's correspondence is a series of letters written following the Battle of Princeton that relate the treatment Rush administered to a Hugh Mercer, who later died of his wounds.

The materials dated 1801 were addressed to Thomas Jefferson, then president of the APS. The second part of the collection contains the raw data. Also included in the data collection are records from the 1740s to the 1770s for Philadelphia that are believed to be done by Phineas [possibly Israel] Pemberton.

| | | | Dates: | 1826-1898 | | | | Abstract: | J.P. Lesley was a prominent Pennsylvanian who became a leading geologist. This collection contains a range of materials that relate to his life. The content of the correspondence is not just scientific. Instead, subjects span a wide-range of topics, including European travel, the Civil War, politics, art, literature, personal affairs, and family matters. The papers also reflect Lesley wide-ranging scientific interests. Although a geologist, Lesley also dabbled in demographic studies, religion, and philology. A fair amount of the collection is from the 1850s and beyond. Much of this early correspondence is among family members, but some letters are from prominent reformers, such as Lydia Maria Child. Among the Lesley papers are poems, journals, and notebooks. Two boxes date from 1841 to 1851, which, notably, deal with the period before Lesley became a full-time geologist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

| | | | Dates: | 1736-1744 | | | | Abstract: | This slender volume contains the letters of James Logan to the proprietors during his tenure as President of the Council, a period from 1746-1744. After Patrick Gordon died in 1736, Logan assumed the powers of the lieutenant governor as the President of the Council. The governorship was assumed in 1738 by George Thomas, but Logan continued as President of the Council. These letters touch upon a range of matters then concerning the government of Pennsylvania, including its border dispute with Maryland and tensions with Indian groups in western areas.

| | | | Dates: | 1699-1750 | | | | Abstract: | These four volumes of letters are edited transcriptions of letters now at the HSP. The letters were edited by Deborah Norris Logan, who authored books on colonial Pennsylvania history in the nineteenth century. Although many of the letters are nearly complete, Norris occasionally summarizes content rather than transcribe it. There are some letters that are not from or to Logan, but were likely in his possession. Among those are letters from Conrad Weiser, Richard Peters, and Thomas Lee of Virginia. Although the letters are from 1674-1751, most are from the first quarter of the eighteenth century.
