| | | Dates: | 1775 | | | Abstract: | Sometime in the 19th Century, Stephen Du Ponceau translated Ferdinando Galiani's famous tract on the laws of neutrality. These two bound volumes of Galiani's work appear to be in Du Ponceau's hand and bound within the text are long and detailed notes on the work. Du Ponceau's interest likely had to do with his legal career that dealt with issues of international trade, a focus that is a prominent part of Du Ponceau's papers at the APS.

| Author: | Gray, Asa, 1810-1888 | Requires cookie* | | Title: | Asa Gray papers, 1838-1887
| | | Dates: | 1838-1887 | | | Abstract: | This Collection consists of a variety of correspondence Asa Gray carried on with fellow scientists and collectors in the United States and Europe. Asa Gray was a leading nineteenth American botanist; securing a professorship at Harvard in 1842, he became perhaps the first professional botanist in America. The topic of the letters is almost exclusively botanical in nature. The correspondence includes discussions of publications, current specimens, and fossilized flora. Although Gray carried on extensive correspondence with Charles Darwin, none of that is in this manuscript collection, although the APS does have microfilm of Asa Gray's correspondence that contains some of this Darwin material.

| Author: | Great Britain. Board of Trade | Requires cookie* | | Title: | Papers on the West Indies, 1707-1709
| | | Dates: | 1707-1709 | | | Abstract: | This Collection is a series of letters written during Queen Anne's War/The War of Spanish Succession between 1707 and 1709 involving military, political, and trade issues in the British Caribbean. Documents include a petition from merchants in Barbados to the Crown, orders from imperial ministers in Whitehall to governors, and reports from governors in the Caribbean. The documents often relate to events surrounding the war then engulfing Europe. One of the documents, for instance, is a finding of the Board of Trade that rejects a petition that would allow merchants to ship flour from North American colonies to Portugal, a member of the "Grand Alliance," finding that such trade would hurt the "Sugar Islands" too much.

| | | Dates: | n.d. | | | Abstract: | Theophilus Grew was an astronomer, teacher, and author in Philadelphia. He provided astronomical calculations for many almanacs, including Poor Richard's. This single volume contains Grew's astronomical calculations for 1746-1761 for Philadelphia, which likely served as the basis for data used in almanacs. He was also a teacher. He ran a school before joining the early faculty in what would become the University of Pennsylvania. The volume can shed light on astronomical methods and calculations in early America, and what type of methods may have been taught to students in 1750s Philadelphia.
