 Abstract:  This volume, along with [Dictionary of Heraldry] (Mss.929.6.H41), date from the 18th century and contain a range of information on heraldry. The Dictionary of Heraldry (H41) lists family names and descriptions of their shields. The back of the volume includes designs of various shields, many of which are in color. The Book on Heraldry (B646), which carries what appears to be a forgery of Benjamin Franklin's signature on its first page, is much smaller. It too contains information on names, shields, and family origins. The back page has a map of the Delmarva Peninsula done by Mason and Dixon. Notes on longitude and latitude sit on the page next to the map.

 Abstract:  This dictionary of Native American language dates to 1771 and is from the Great Lakes region, an area often called the pays d'en haut. The dictionary is in French. The collection came to the APS from the Academy of Natural Sciences. It is bound in a rather unique white, soft leather cover.

 Abstract:  This collection of astronomical calculations from 1786-1838 consists of various loose notes on eclipses and solar/lunar calculations, including information on an eclipse as witnessed in Canton and Philadelphia. The collection also has a folio size bound volume that diagrams (sometimes with color added) eclipses for the years 1818, 1820, 1822, 1823, 1824, 1829, 1838, as observed in Philadelphia.

 Abstract:  The "Journal of a Voyage in the Ship Sampson" tracks the transatlantic crossing of an unknown immigrant from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1819. The last pages describe the approach to Philadelphia in detail. The journal also touches on some of the emotions the author felt as he disembarked. The last page contains a poem written by the journal's author titled "On Leaving England for America" and a letter written to friends from "this land of liberty."

 Title:  The Natchez, 1840

 Abstract:  This fascinating account of the Natchez was written in 1840 and appears to convey oral history of the time. The author begins by stating "it was with extreme difficulty we succeeded in procuring the information." The document is approximately 135 pages long and touches on the Natchez history and their "manners, customs, [and] traditions." The focus of the document is on their history, however, and much of the content was relayed to the author orally by the Natchez. There is an extended discussion of their beliefs and practices. The document contains biographical data on prominent members of the Natchez and other native peoples, such as Pushmataha.
