Abstract

Linguistic field recordings recorded in Prescott, Arizona, June - August 1974. Elicitation of Yavapai vocabulary and grammar. Also includes stories and speech given in Yavapai only.

Background note

Péter Simoncsics (1946-) is a linguist specializing in Uralic (especially Samoyedic) languages, oral literatures and cultures. Born in Győr, Hungary, January 17th 1946, he grew up in and attended university in Szeged, graduating in 1969 in English and Finno-Ugric studies. He started work at the National Széchényi Library. In 1971 he returned to the University of Szeged, working with his mentor Péter Hajdú. Between 1973 and 1974 he lectured on Hungarian at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he was the recipient of a Phillips Fund grant to compare Samoyedic languages with Yavapai, out of which this collection was produced. He spent 1976-1981 at the University of Turku, 1988-1992 at the University of Aarhus, 2002-2003 at the University of Pannonia, and 2003 until retirement in 2008 at Babeș-Bolyai University.
