Tape 4 contains a reading of three texts, "Hualapai Sounds," "Let's Learn How to Write and Read in Hualapai," and "Nach Posvchyu (I am a cat)," written and read by Akira Yamamoto and Jane Honga.

Background note

Akira Y. Yamamoto is professor emeritus of linguistic anthropology at the University of Kansas, specialising in language endangerment, teaching and revitalization. He is especially known for his work on the Hualapai language. His co-authored "Hualapai Reference Grammar", printed in 1982 with an update in 2003, remains an important resource, to which his Phillips Fund research (1974, 1980) contributed. Graduating from Indiana University with a Ph.D. in 1974, he has spent most of his career at the University of Kansas. His expertise on language teaching and revitalization has seen him work with institutions including the American Indian Language Development Institute (University of Arizona, summers of 1989-1991 and 1995-2005), UNESCO, and Ka Haka 'Ula O Ke'elikölani (University of Hawaii at Hilo). He has also contributed summary chapters to multiple publications on the status of languages in the United States.
