Abstract

The James V. Neel Papers document nearly every phase of the career of one of the founders of human population genetics in the United States. Neel was particularly thorough and organized, and retained virtually all of his significant scientific correspondence, committee reports, minutes of meetings, and drafts of manuscripts. The collection also includes data collected during Neel's work among the Xavante, Yanomanö and other indigenous populations. In a career that spanned the period from the late work of Thomas Hunt Morgan and Charles B. Davenport to the contemporary world of molecular genetics and nucleic acids, Neel knew, worked with, and corresponded with many of the most influential 20th century practitioners of genetics. The collection begins in earnest in 1943, after Neel had decided to focus on human genetics. Neel's work with Drosophila and none of his Drosophila manuscripts are found in the collection.

Background note

Papers of James V. Neel, pioneering human population geneticist and professor in the Department of Human Genetics, University of Michigan Medical School. Curt Stern's first graduate student at the University of Rochester, and a post-doctoral student under Theodosius Dobzhansky, Neel began his career as a Drosophila geneticist, but after taking his first professional appointment as an assistant professor at Dartmouth, decided to alter his course into human genetics. Reasoning that he needed a solid medical education to complement his genetical training, he returned to Rochester in 1942 to study for an MD.

Like all medical students during the Second World War, Neel was inducted into military service. Rochester was the base for studies in radiation biology associated with the Manhattan Project, and at the end of the war, with Neel still in the military, a chance friendship with the adjutant to the head of the project resulted in Neel's appointment to help organize a genetical survey of the atomic bomb survivors. In 1946-1947, Neel lived in Hiroshima while organizing this project as part of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Committee (ABCC), and he maintained a close connection to the study until his death. His work in Japan expanded to include a series of related projects on the biology and genetics of consanguinity, among other topics.

While at Rochester, Neel also began to establish a name for himself in other areas of human genetics. As a resident at Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital, Neel encountered a case of thalassemia, and reading the medical literature, he became convinced that it was a recessive genetic disease. Over a span of five years he delineated the genetic basis of haemoglobin diseases - first thalassemia, then sickle cell disease - in the process, helping to precipitate the revolution in biochemical genetics of the 1950s through 1970s. Neel's work also encompassed the evolutionary implications for these diseases, implanting terms such as "balanced polymorphism" and "heterozygote advantage" into the vocabularies of evolutionary biologists. Neel's studies of thalassemia and sickle cell disease were recognized with the receipt of the Lasker Award in 1955.

In the late 1950s, Neel entered into a third major set of projects, turning to extensive field studies in population genetics. Recognizing that the number of human populations isolated from modern medicines and modern technology was rapidly dwindling, Neel embarked on an ambitious genetic survey of the indigenous Xavante of Brazil and, later, the Yanomamo of the Brazilian-Venezuelan borderlands. These studies, carried out over the course of more than a decade, and involving even longer spans of laboratory work, constitute the first and most comprehensive studies of human population and breeding structure and genetic diseases among indigenous, tribal peoples. Dr. Neel died in February, 2000.

Scope and content

Native American Images note : 140 black and white silver gelatin photographs, photomechanical prints, pencil sketches, and maps of Yanomamo and Xavante Indians of Venezuela and Brazil collected by Neel during his fieldwork from 1962-1968. Primarily photographs by anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon of Yanomamo Indians while Neel studied chromosome aberrations and administered vaccinations. Both tribes depicted in jungle settlements with images of dwelling, weapons, farming, cooking, and dancing in native dress. Also, maps showing distribution of dialects.

1940-1997 17 box

The Research series is comprised of folders containing primarily research data with some correspondence. Some folders contain graphs or charts on photographic paper and, occasionally, film negatives. The folders in the research series are not directly connected to the published manuscripts, which are in the "Works by Neel" sub-series, but support the published works.

1957-1996 8 box

The focus of the Amerindian sub-series is Neel's work with native peoples of the Western hemisphere, primarily in South America. This series includes Neel's Amazonian work in Venezuela and Brazil with Napoleon Chagnon. Several files pertain to the expeditions of the 1960s.

1940-1997 3 box

The Hematology sub-series is a grouping of Neel's study on blood and blood diseases. He focused primarily on studies of sickle cell, thalassemia, and hemoglobin.

1959-1988 2 box

The Japan sub-series is composed of Neel's research geographically tied to the islands of Japan. His initial purpose in Japan was with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission studying the effects of exposure to ionizing radiation from the use of atomic weapons at the end of World War II. He went on to include the mutagenic effects of chemical exposure (e.g. worker's exposed to mustard gas manufactured during WWII) as well as the inbreeding, or consanguination, in small Japanese communities, specifically on the island of Hirado. The bulk of the materials are tied to the regions of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Hirado.

1958-1975 1 box

The Twins series contains research pertaining to Neel's study of twins in and around the state of Michigan.

1933-1999 58 box

The Works by Neel series is comprised of material that resulted in a public lecture, presentation, published journal article, book chapter, etc. These include works where Neel is the sole author, any co-authored items, as well as a small number of works edited by Neel. There were often many drafts produced during Neel's writing process. He would start with a hand written version on a pad of legal paper before progressing through many type-written drafts; he frequently removed large chunks, wrote inserts in the margins, stapled new material over the old, and wrote multi-page inserts, additions, or corrections that were interleaved inside the type-written drafts. Only the latest version was retained. Folders in this series contain correspondence (including, but not limited to: co-authors, fellow researchers, editors/publishing houses, conference coordinators, etc.), tables and research data, graphics (with sporadic negatives), and the draft(s) of the paper that was the finished product.

1962-1998 17 box

The focus of the Amerindian sub-series is Neel's published works relating to native peoples of the Western hemisphere, primarily in South America.

1944-1993 6 box

The Hematology sub-series documents James Neel's blood related works. Neel was heavily involved in studying genetic aspects of various blood diseases (sickle cell, thalassemia, etc.). Some materials overlap with Neel's expertise and studies in radiation exposure of humans.

1953-1998 11 box

The Japan sub-series details James Neel's works in Japan. He was initially involved with studying the effects of radiation in the aftemath of the atomic bombings at the end of World War II. These radiation effects studies continued over several decades to observe radiation induced mutations and the long term genetic effects of radiation exposure on humans. Neel's studies expanded to include works on consanguinity in the Japanese population, specifically on the island of Hirado.

1966-1967 1 folder Box 158

File contains drafts, outlines, notes, and correspondence related to talks and lectures given by James Neel. Topics include the Yanomamo and Xavante Indians.

1935-2000 48 box

James Neel served in a leadership capacity with numerous organizations, committees, and sub-committees during his lifetime. This series contains materials documenting the functioning of said groups and Neel's role within them.

1952-1999 11 box

The National Academy of Sciences sub-series documents James Neel's involvement with the NAS. Neel was a member of numerous committees at the NAS and participated in sub-organizations such as the Institute of Medicine. Several of the advisory committees pertain to radiation effects, some documents relate to the merger of the NAS and National Academy of Engineering. A small amount of materials relate to William Shockley and his appeals to the NAS to conduct research on the relationship between IQ and race.

1941-1995 7 box

The National Research Council (NRC) sub-series documents James Neel's involvement with the NAS-NRC. Neel was involved with numerous committees ranging topics from human heredity, radiation effects, Agent Orange, veterans' studies, etc.
