Series 2: Boude Family Papers | 1910-1982 | 4 item(s)
Background note: The Boude Family was centered in Philadelphia and originally consisted of crafts people. The Boude Family is related to the Smith Family through the Bonnell's. Sallie Sherrerd Bonnell, who married Henry Howard Houston, was the great-grand daughter of Mary Boude daughter of Thomas Boude, (1700-1780). Thomas Boude was a master brick layer who worked on Independence Hall. Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales was descended from the Boude family. This series contains material relating to the Boude family consisting of correspondence and family history. The bulk of the collection is correspondence from the early 1980's and concerns the relationship of the Boude family to Lady Diana Spencer. Material in this series includes genealogical reports and correspondence concerning the veracity of the genealogical connection between Lady Diana and the Boude family. Arrangement: Folders are arranged chronologically.

Series 3: Bringhurst Family Papers | 1910-1982 | 2 folders
Background note: The Bringhurst's are a Philadelphia Family, who emigrated from England in the early 18th century and settled in Germantown. The Bringhursts are related to the Houston Smith's through Sallie Sherrerd Bonnell who was married to Henry Howard Houston and her mother was Cornelia Clarkson Bringhurst. The Bringhursts stayed in the area and contributed to the trades and professions around Philadelphia. This series contains a silhouette of a man and a silhouette of a woman who are thought to be George and Anna Clarkson Bringhurst. There is a copy of the "Germantowne Crier", with information pertaining to the Bringhurst house and a clipping from the "Sunday Bulletin", June 10, 1973, documenting the transfer of the Bringhurst House from the Germantown Savings Bank to the National Park Service. Series 4: Brown Family Papers | 1906-1951 | 0.25 Linear feet
Background note: The Brown Family Papers relate to the family of Charles "Charlie" Wardell Brown (1891-1951), Charlotte H.S. Houston's son by her first marriage to Charles Wardell Brown (1862-1898). As a widow, Charlotte later married Samuel F. Houston who had three children by his previous marriage to Edith Atlee Corlies: Edith Corlies Houston, Gertrude Houston Henry, and Henry Howard Houston. Charlotte and Sam successfully combined their households and late had Eleanor Houston. C.W. Brown, like his step-brother Henry Howard Houston, went to the University of Pennsylvania, and later served in World War I as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Later, C.W. Brown (1891-1951) married Gladys Williams and they had two sons, Charles Wardell Brown, Jr. and Joseph Williams Brown. Although C.W. Brown (1891-1951) may have officially been known C.W. Brown Jr. he seemed to be known in the family as Charlie, and his son C.W. Brown (1928-) was known as C.W. Brown Jr. This series contains correspondence, telegrams, newspaper clippings, and legal documents. The bulk of the material is from the 1930's and documents the Brown and Houston family's response to Gladys's tuberculosis and her subsequent treatment. Gladys was diagnosed in 1931 with consumption, and was shortly thereafter sent to Asheville, North Carolina for recuperation. Her physician during this period was Dr. Martin L. Stevens. The correspondence between Stevens and Charlotte Houston documents Gladys's case and the type of activities that she could undertake, specifically in regard to visits for her husband and children. Due to the extended nature of Gladys's absence from Philadelphia, and the strained relations with her husband, the custody of her children, Charles Jr. and Joseph were transferred to the grandparents, Charlotte and Samuel F. Houston. Also included in this series are several printed items pertaining to World War I Navy ships and mail from and to Eleanor Houston Smith detailing funeral instructions. Arrangement: Folders are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent or folder title. Items within folders are arranged chronologically.

Series 40: Anthony Morgan Papers | 1694-1799 | 0.25 Linear feet
Background note: Anthony Morgan (1657-1732) was a landowner who lived in Darby Township, PA, on part of the "Welsh Tract," with his wife, Elizabeth, and daughter, Mary. His family wrote to him from Wales regarding the death of his father. Anthony's brother Edward inherited their father's estate but died shortly after. His brother Nicholas then inhabited the house, though Anthony inherited the property. In 1720 and 1721/22, Nicholas and Rowland Morgan ask for their brother's help in their dispute over the proper execution of the estate. Anthony's daughter Mary married Abraham Lewis (1714 - 1775) This series contains 66 documents relating to the life of Anthony Morgan (1657-1732) and his estate. The documents include: receipts, bonds, accounts, correspondence and legal papers. The correspondence mentions family matters for the both the Morgans and the Lewises. There are several receipts, bonds and accounts for the purchase and sale of everything from horses to sewing goods. Two receipts, from 1705 and 1716, document Morgan's purchase of slaves. Two documents from 1715 and 1756 detail the transfer of title for indentured servants; the 1756 indenture is on a printed form. The receipts also cover land rental by and from Anthony Morgan. The accounts are both his charges and charges incurred by others through loans. There are also agreements and indentures relating to land use and rental in Darby. Anthony Morgan died in 1732. There is a 1729/30 draft of his will and receipts relating to the execution of his estate. The management of his estate appears to have been carried out by several executors, including Abednego Vaughan and Abraham Lewis, his son-in-law. Edward Tilghman's opinion in 1799 on the Morgan estate concerns how Anthony Lewis, Morgan's grandson, and Mary Lewis should proceed with the entail. The undated items are of some interest as one is a letter from Morgan to the Monthly Meeting of Darby in which Morgan apologizes for speaking unjustly against a man who is not named but who Morgan believed had besmirched Morgan's reputation. Accoding to the letter, Morgan met this man later and they resolved their differences. The other documents contain advice on medical practice for horses. Also included are letters from Joseph Price to his sister, Ann. It seems as though Ann Price and Jane Morgan are sisters, either by blood or marriage. Jane Morgan is married to Morgan Morgan see folder 1747 August 11, Joseph Price to Ann Price.
