Smith-Houston-Morris-Ogden Family papers, 1659-1985

Mss.Ms.Coll.76

Date: 1659-1985 | Size: 350 Linear feet

Abstract

The Smith-Houston-Morris-Ogden Family Papers document the history of the Houston, Smith, Ogden, Morris and allied families, beginning in the late 17th century, and continuing through to near the end of the 20th. Among the many treasures in this vast collection are the papers of Pennsylvania Railroad executive Henry Howard Houston (1820-1895), his son, Samuel Frederick Houston (1866-1952), and of Pennsylvania attorney and treasury official, William Meredith (1752-1816). Although the collection contains a great deal of interest with respect to land speculation, commerce, and trade emanating from Philadelphia, the bulk of the Smith Family Papers consists of personal and family correspondence and other papers. Among the largest and most interesting bodies of papers are those of L.M.C. Smith and Eleanor Houston Smith, daughter of Samuel F. Smith. These document the family's progressive attitudes regarding and resource conservation, historic preservation, and their social activism. This very large collection includes much material that is not itemized below.

Arrangement

The large collection has material from many families. The families also intermarried and married into other families, so making sense of these connections while keeping individuals and families more or less discrete units was challenging. Series numbers were assigned to either families (Bonnell Family) or individuals (Gouverneur Morris). Early in the cataloging some series numbers were skipped, anticipating later additions or divisions, but not all skipped numbers have been used. Items within series have been divided into types of material. Within these subseries material is arranged either chronologically, by title, or by correspondent.

This very large collection includes much material that is not itemized below. Some series are not arranged or fully arranged and are not accessible. Consult individual series descriptions for their current status.

Digital objects note

Early American History Note

The Smith-Houston-Morris-Ogden Collection is the APS's largest collection. It has a vast array of materials from early America. The APS has on file a 303-page survey of the collection that scholars may want to consult before beginning their research. In general, the collection contains information on business, politics, family and social life, Philadelphia history, land expansion, and estates. A good part Morris portion of the collection comes from Governeur Morris and his wife. The bulk of this material begins with his time as an emissary to France during the early republic and continues to his death. There is also a fairly extensive collection of his wife's correspondence, most of which follows Governeur's death. Her letters touch on issues relating to his estate and to other affairs. It includes discussions of slavery in Virginia and contains correspondence from memebers of the extended Jefferson family. The Ogden's were surveyors and land speculators in the late colonial and early national period. This portion of the collection contains discussion of land, business, politics, and family matters. A significant amount of these papers focus on the operations of a grist mill in New York. There are papers from numerous other prominent families, such as the Clemsons, Morgans, and Lewises, who were related through marriage.

This series contains a silhouette of a man and a silhouette of a woman who are thought to be George and Anna Clarkson Bringhurst. There is a copy of the "Germantowne Crier", with information pertaining to the Bringhurst house and a clipping from the "Sunday Bulletin", June 10, 1973, documenting the transfer of the Bringhurst House from the Germantown Savings Bank to the National Park Service.

1906-1951 0.25 Linear feet

This series contains correspondence, telegrams, newspaper clippings, and legal documents. The bulk of the material is from the 1930's and documents the Brown and Houston family's response to Gladys's tuberculosis and her subsequent treatment. Gladys was diagnosed in 1931 with consumption, and was shortly thereafter sent to Asheville, North Carolina for recuperation. Her physician during this period was Dr. Martin L. Stevens. The correspondence between Stevens and Charlotte Houston documents Gladys's case and the type of activities that she could undertake, specifically in regard to visits for her husband and children. Due to the extended nature of Gladys's absence from Philadelphia, and the strained relations with her husband, the custody of her children, Charles Jr. and Joseph were transferred to the grandparents, Charlotte and Samuel F. Houston. Also included in this series are several printed items pertaining to World War I Navy ships and mail from and to Eleanor Houston Smith detailing funeral instructions.

This series contains 66 documents relating to the life of Anthony Morgan (1657-1732) and his estate. The documents include: receipts, bonds, accounts, correspondence and legal papers. The correspondence mentions family matters for the both the Morgans and the Lewises. There are several receipts, bonds and accounts for the purchase and sale of everything from horses to sewing goods. Two receipts, from 1705 and 1716, document Morgan's purchase of slaves. Two documents from 1715 and 1756 detail the transfer of title for indentured servants; the 1756 indenture is on a printed form. The receipts also cover land rental by and from Anthony Morgan. The accounts are both his charges and charges incurred by others through loans. There are also agreements and indentures relating to land use and rental in Darby. Anthony Morgan died in 1732. There is a 1729/30 draft of his will and receipts relating to the execution of his estate. The management of his estate appears to have been carried out by several executors, including Abednego Vaughan and Abraham Lewis, his son-in-law. Edward Tilghman's opinion in 1799 on the Morgan estate concerns how Anthony Lewis, Morgan's grandson, and Mary Lewis should proceed with the entail. The undated items are of some interest as one is a letter from Morgan to the Monthly Meeting of Darby in which Morgan apologizes for speaking unjustly against a man who is not named but who Morgan believed had besmirched Morgan's reputation. Accoding to the letter, Morgan met this man later and they resolved their differences. The other documents contain advice on medical practice for horses. Also included are letters from Joseph Price to his sister, Ann. It seems as though Ann Price and Jane Morgan are sisters, either by blood or marriage. Jane Morgan is married to Morgan Morgan see folder 1747 August 11, Joseph Price to Ann Price.

 Series 4: Brown Family Papers
1906-1951 0.25 Linear feet

Background note: The Brown Family Papers relate to the family of Charles "Charlie" Wardell Brown (1891-1951), Charlotte H.S. Houston's son by her first marriage to Charles Wardell Brown (1862-1898). As a widow, Charlotte later married Samuel F. Houston who had three children by his previous marriage to Edith Atlee Corlies: Edith Corlies Houston, Gertrude Houston Henry, and Henry Howard Houston. Charlotte and Sam successfully combined their households and late had Eleanor Houston. C.W. Brown, like his step-brother Henry Howard Houston, went to the University of Pennsylvania, and later served in World War I as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Later, C.W. Brown (1891-1951) married Gladys Williams and they had two sons, Charles Wardell Brown, Jr. and Joseph Williams Brown. Although C.W. Brown (1891-1951) may have officially been known C.W. Brown Jr. he seemed to be known in the family as Charlie, and his son C.W. Brown (1928-) was known as C.W. Brown Jr.

Background note: Anthony Morgan (1657-1732) was a landowner who lived in Darby Township, PA, on part of the "Welsh Tract," with his wife, Elizabeth, and daughter, Mary. His family wrote to him from Wales regarding the death of his father. Anthony's brother Edward inherited their father's estate but died shortly after. His brother Nicholas then inhabited the house, though Anthony inherited the property. In 1720 and 1721/22, Nicholas and Rowland Morgan ask for their brother's help in their dispute over the proper execution of the estate. Anthony's daughter Mary married Abraham Lewis (1714 - 1775)
