Dr. Goldstine's contributions to the development of the computer are documented in the collection, especially in relation to his work with John von Neumann.

Background note

Herman Heine Goldstine (1913-2004) was a mathematician and computer scientist, one of the original developers of ENIAC, the first of the modern electronic digital computers. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Goldstine earned his PhD in mathematics at the University of Chicago in 1936. While a professor of mathematics, first at Chicago then at the University of Michigan, he was called to serve in the Army in 1942. Assigned to the Ballistic Research Laboratory of the United States Army Ordnance Department, Aberdeen, Maryland, he was the government liaison to the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. There he worked on Projects PX and PY. Project PX resulted in the development and construction of the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), the first general purpose electronic digital computer. Project PY was the initiative to develop and build the second generation electronic computer known as EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Computer). After his discharge in 1945, Goldstine worked as the Assistant Project Director, under John von Neumann, at the Institute for Advanced Study's Electronic Computer Project. In 1958, Goldstine took a job with the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). There his positions included Director of the Mathematical Sciences Department to Director of Scientific Development to IBM Fellow at career's end in 1984. In retirement, as Executive Officer of the American Philosophical Society, 1984-1997, Goldstine continued to publish works on the history and development of the computer.

Scope and content

The Herman Heine Goldstine Papers (1934-1996) contain correspondence and memoranda; legal documants; manuscripts and typescripts of published and unpublished works and lectures; printed reports and reprints; schematic drawings; photoprints and slides; and newspaper clippings and ephemera documenting Goldstine's career as a mathematician, research administrator, and author with interests in the history of mathematics and computing. His involvement in the projects to build ENIAC and EDVAC are particularly well covered. Of note, are the ENIAC reports, technical descriptions, equations and computations, authored by Adele K. Goldstine. Also included are materials relating to Goldstine's work as a consultant for a number of government agencies and departments, as well as his leadership of the Mathematical Research group at IBM.

Digital objects note

This collection contains digital materials that are available in the APS Digital Library. Links to these materials are provided with context in the inventory of this finding aid. A general listing of digital objects may also be found here.
