Luis S. Kemnitzer Papers

Mss.Ms.Coll.182

Date: 1959-1970 1929-2007 | Size: 3.5 Linear feet

Abstract

The Luis S. Kemnitzer Papers include correspondence, works by Kemnitzer and others, research notes, printed materials, photographs, slides, and personal items. The majority of them focus on the socioeconomic status (especially health) of Native Americans living in the San Francisco Bay Area, as part and extension of the Social Survey of American Indian Urban Integration. This study particularly involved Oglala Lakota, Navajo and Pueblo consultants. Other research areas reflected in the collection include a 1977 fieldwork excursion to Palau, folk music and the California railroad of the late 1950s, and sexual health.

Background note

Luis S. Kemnitzer (1928-2006) was an anthropologist and activist, known for his diverse involvement in Native American political and social movements, peace movements, folk music history, and healthcare. Raised in California and Germany, Kemnitzer began studying public health at the University of California, Berkeley, leaving to work as a brakeman on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and joining the Communist Party USA.

In the early 1960s, Kemnitzer was part of a large team of researchers undertaking the Social Survey of American Indian Urban Integration, a pioneering study of urban Native Americans in the San Francisco Bay area. Afterwards he went on to receive his doctorate in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania based on fieldwork with the Oglala Lakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and became the director of the Lakota Language and Culture Center. He also supported the 1969-1971 occupation of Alcatraz Island, and became the first teacher of American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University, where he taught for 27 years.

Kemnitzer helped organize the first needle exchange program for HIV prevention, and traveled far in studies of healthcare, including to Palau in the late 1970s. He also won a Grammy award for Best Album Notes in 1998 after co-authoring the liner notes.

Scope and content

Series I, totaling more than half of the collection, contains Kemnitzer's materials relating to Native America, especially his and others' studies during the 1960s on urban Native Americans of the San Francisco Bay Area. Subseries I contains materials directly relating to a multi-researcher project between 1961 and 1963 titled "Social Survey of American Indian Urban Integration", including photographs of the interiors of Native American homes, as well as extensive summaries of interviews and conversations, and statistical analysis of consultants' social and economic situations. Subseries II, titled by Kemnitzer as "Pueblo Papers", contains what appears to be William Willard's contributions to the project, focusing on Pueblo and Navajo people. Subseries III contains fieldnotes and a few related items from Kemnitzer's late 1960s research at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, much of which was completed with some of the same families as the San Francisco Bay Area project. Subseries IV contains original works by Kemnitzer, published and unpublished, on Native America, especially drawing from the previous subseries' research. Subseries V also draws from that research, containing many San Francisco Bay Area colleagues' produced works, as well as other Native American articles in Kemnitzer's possession.

Series II contains negatives, slides and field notebooks from a 1977 medical trip to Palau. Series III contains materials mostly from the late 1950s to early 1960s on the folklore of the California railroad, for which Kemnitzer worked. The remainder of the materials are in Series IV, consisting mostly of articles on sexual health. Of note are a notebook from around the 1980s on various Native American topics, family birth and death certificates, and some draft articles on folk music from 1959.
