Abstract

Val Logsdon Fitch, (1923-2015)was born on March 10, 1923, in Merriman, Nebraska, in the remote Sandhills region in the north of the state. During WWII, he was drafted and sent to Los Alamos, N.M., to work as a technician on the Manhattan Project. While there, he helped design the detonator for the atomic bomb that was tested at Alamogordo and later dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. He shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics with James Cronin for work that revealed a surprising imbalance in the laws of nature and helped explain why the collision of matter and antimatter has not destroyed everything in the universe. Their discovery of CP (charge parity invariance) violation was the result of experiments that included four objectives: to test the anomalous results of Adair, et al, to study the regeneration phenomena under a variety of conditions in different materials, to set new limits on the decay of the long-lived neutral K to two pions, and to check for the presence of neutral currents in strangeness changing decays. The Val Logsdon Fitch Papers include his research of K mesons, the innovation of the velocity-selecting Cherenkov counter that separated K+ from protons and pions in the beam, neutral kaons, CP violation in proton-antiproton interactions, the 'gap' method invented by Fitch to take measurements of KL - KS mass difference, a search for short-distance gravitational forces and finally, strange dibaryons. Dr. Fitch used particle accelerators to perform his experiments including the Bevatron, the Cosmotron, the accelerator at the Fermilab and the superconducting super collider at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. The collection is divided into XV Series.

Background note

Val Logsdon Fitch (1923- 2015) shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics with James Cronin for work that revealed a surprising imbalance in the laws of nature and helped explain why the collision of matter and antimatter has not destroyed everything in the universe. The two met at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and became friendly during long nights playing bridge while waiting for the lab's particle accelerator, the Cosmotron, to get running. While there, Dr. Fitch realized that the new detector Dr. Cronin built called a spark chamber spectrometer, would be perfect for an experiment on unstable subatomic particles known as K mesons. Dr. Fitch and Dr. Cronin wrote a two-page proposal and, with two colleagues, James Christenson and René Turlay, set up their experiment in a cramped space in the middle of a new accelerator, the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. They referred to the space as Inner Mongolia as they had to climb over magnets to get to it.

Their discovery of CP (charge parity invariance) violation was the result of experiments that included four objectives which were: to test the anomalous results of Adair, et al, to study the regeneration phenomena under a variety of conditions in different materials, to set new limits on the decay of the long-lived neutral K to two pions, and to check for the presence of neutral currents in strangeness changing decays.

"We were largely left alone," Dr. Fitch said in 1980. "We did our own thing, and no one came around and asked any questions. We just sat there and watched the mesons go by."

In a couple of years they had their answers, and the results shook physics. In about 50 cases, the mesons decayed in a way that was forbidden if nature did not discriminate between matter and antimatter. As Dr. Cronin later explained it in an email, the mesons decayed about 0.3 percent faster into a configuration that included the antiparticle of an electron, called a positron, than they did into one that included an electron.

The 1964 experiment proved that certain subatomic reactions do not adhere to fundamental symmetry principles. Specifically, Dr.Fitch and Dr. Cronin proved, by examining the decay of kaons, that a reaction run in reverse does not merely retrace the path of the original reaction, which showed that the interactions of subatomic particles are not invariant under time reversal. Thus the phenomenon of CP violation was discovered. This discovery is thought to explain the presence of matter in the universe.

Val Logsdon Fitch was born on March 10, 1923, in Merriman, Nebraska, in the remote Sandhills region in the north of the state. He was the youngest of three children of a cattle rancher, Fred Fitch, and a schoolteacher, Frances M. Logsdon. After his father was injured in a horse-riding accident, the family moved 30 miles west to Gordon, Neb., where his father worked in insurance and Val Fitch graduated from high school in 1940 as valedictorian.

After two and a half years at Chadron State College in northern Nebraska, he was drafted and sent to Los Alamos, N.M., to work as a technician on the Manhattan Project. During World War II, he was assigned to work with Ernest Titterton, a member of the British Mission. While there, Fitch helped design the detonator for the atomic bomb, designing ways of measuring how fast the explosion moved through the bomb and ways of triggering the explosion. He also designed the circuit that sent out the final pulse to automatically trigger the bomb's first test. The test, called the Trinity test took place at Alamogordo, New Mexico and was of the plutonium bomb.

Dr. Fitch stayed at Los Alamos for three years, rubbing elbows with famous physicists. "I observed that the most accomplished experimentalists were also the ones who knew most about electronics and electronic techniques," he recalled in his Nobel autobiography. He resolved to follow their example.

Following the war, Val Fitch finished his undergraduate degree at McGill University in Montreal, and earned a Ph.D. at Columbia University under James Rainwater, who went on to receive the Nobel in physics in 1975. In his thesis research, Dr. Fitch found that atomic nuclei were only half as big as physicists had thought. He joined the Princeton faculty in 1954 and remained there for the rest of his career.

Dr.Fitch was a member of the Project 137 Group, a military-issues physics summer study program launched by physicists John Archibald Wheeler, Eugene Wigner, and Oskar Morgenstern in 1958. By 1960, this group was called the JASON group made up of elite scientists who advised the United States government on matters of science and technology, mostly of a sensitive nature.

He served on many government committees devoted to science and science policy, was chair of the Princeton Physics Department (1976-1981), president of the American Physical Society (1988-1989), a member of the President's Science Advisory Committee (1970-1973), and was a member and chair of the physics advisory committee to the National Science Foundation (1980-1983). Dr. Fitch served on a number of high energy physics committees and met regularly at CERN, European Organization for Nuclear Research, Geneva, Switzerland to discuss and share cutting edge research with particle physicists from around the world.

In addition to the Nobel Prize, Dr Fitch was the recipient of the National Medal of Science, the Witherell Medal of the Franklin Institute, the E.O. Lawrence Award of the Department of Energy, the Research Corporation Award and the Alumnus Award of the National Association of State Colleges and Universities. He was a Sloan Fellow and Fairchild Scholar at Caltech. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the American Physical Society.

Scope and content

A finding of modern physics is that every elementary particle on nature's menu has an antiparticle with equal and opposite charge. Upon contact the two annihilate. In experiments in 1964 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, Dr. Fitch and James Cronin, found that matter and antimatter obeyed slightly different laws of physics.

One of the possible consequences of this, physicists say, is that if you could run the history of the universe — or any experiment — backward, like a movie in rewind, the laws of physics might not be quite the same. The finding contradicted a principle that had been a bedrock of science since Galileo.

The Val Logsdon Fitch Papers include his research of K mesons, his invention of the velocity-selecting Cherenkov counter that separated K+ from protons and pions in the beam, neutral kaons, CP violation in proton-antiproton interactions, the 'gap' method invented by Fitch to take measurements of KL - KS mass difference, a search for short-distance gravitational forces as well as strange dibaryons. Dr. Fitch used particle accelerators to perform his experiments including the Bevatron in New York, the Cosmotron in Berkeley, California, the accelerator at the Fermilab, Chicago, and the superconducting super collider at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland.

The papers include talks given by Fitch that describe four objectives proposed by him and Dr. James Cronin that led to the discovery of CP (charge parity invariance) violation. The four objectives were: to test the anomalous results of Adair, et al, to study the regeneration phenomena under a variety of conditions in different materials, to set new limits on the decay of the long-lived neutral K to two pions, and to check for the presence of neutral currents in strangeness changing decays.

Fitch describes in a letter to Professor Allan Franklin of the University of Colorado,"Of the running that took place that summer, only the mass difference using the technique of interference between the regeneration amplitudes from two slabs of material with varying separation was not in our proposal. That technique was invented late one night while running."(1978 October 3) Their experiments persuaded them that long lived neutral Ks occasionally decay to two pions and were said to have achieved a deepening understanding of the symmetries of nature by demonstrating that the combined symmetry of parity and of charge conjugation is not, as had been believed, a universal symmetry law of nature.

In addition, the papers provide evidence of Fitch's collaborative style as a faculty member, scientist and member of various committees; some were to develop public policy at the federal level. Correspondence with non scientists also provides evidence of his personality as when he responded to someone asking to settle a bet regarging the physics of a rising fast ball and whether or not a ball thrown overhand actually does rise. His response included equations and explanations about the physics involved.(Val Fitch to Paul Budline, 1983)

Fitch apointed research collaborator of the Cosmotron at Brookhaven. Early in Brookhaven Lab history, the consortium of universities responsible for founding the new research center, decided that Brookhaven should provide leading facilities for high energy physics research. In April 1948, the Atomic Energy Commission approved a plan for a proton synchrotron to be built at Brookhaven. The new machine would accelerate protons to previously unheard of energies—comparable to the cosmic rays showering the earth's outer atmosphere. It would be called the Cosmotron.

Mentions the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) was built on the innovative concept of the alternating gradient, or strong-focusing, principle, developed by Brookhaven physicists Ernst Courant, M. Stanley Livingston, and Hartland Snyder in the 1950s. This breakthrough concept in accelerator design allowed scientists to accelerate protons to energies that would have been otherwise unachievable. The AGS became the world's premiere accelerator when it reached its design energy of 33 billion electron volts (GeV) in July of 1960. ISABELLE program involves colliding beams of protons.
