Abstract

The papers of physicist George Reynolds consists of correspondence and manuscripts.

Background note

George T. Reynolds was an American physicist whose insights led to developments in elementary particle physics, environmental science, and biological physics. Born in Trenton, New Jersey on May 27, 1917. Reynolds graduated from Rutgers University in 1939, Physics and Math, B.S., from Princeton in 1943, Physics, Ph.D. Reynolds was a physicist for the United States Navy and worked on the Manhattan Project and on Tinian Island in Japan during World War II, specializing in blast effects and bomb damage analysis.

1948-1970 - Director of High Energy Physics Program 1963-1967 - Director of Science in Human Affairs Program 1964-1967 - Principal Investigator, Biophysics Program 1970-1973, Director, Center for environmental Studies 2001-2005 - Adjuct Scientist, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute

He was a Guggenheim Fellow at University of London, a Churchill Fellow at Cambridge University, and twice a Research Fellow at Oxford University.

From 1974-2004, Dr. Reynolds was on the Board of Trustees for Rutgers University. His consultantships were based on research in mass spectroscopy, blast effects, high-energy physics, cosmic rays and space physics, oceanography, radiation detection, photosensitive devices, image intensification, optical systems, biomedical and environmental studies and equipment.

Scope and content

George T. Reynolds was a physicist whose insights led to developments in elementary particle physics, environmental science, and biological physics.

Dr. Reynolds was a faculty member in the physics department at Princeton University for four decades, concentrating on the fields of cosmic rays, high energy particle physics and biophysics. He was considered one of the founders of high energy particle physics. His contributions included the invention of the liquid scintillator that provided for the detection of ionizing particles by means of the light they produce; a useful tool for cosmic ray, nuclear, biological and medical research.

Dr. Reynolds also contributed to the research of mass spectroscopy, blast effects, high-energy physics, cosmic rays and space physics, oceanography, radiation detection, photosensitive devices, image intensification, optical systems, and biomedical and environmental studies and equipment.

He worked on an X-ray diffraction system to be applied to the study of the structure and properties of biomembranes and biopolymers and performed synchrotron radiation experiments.

From 1965-2005, Dr. Reynolds was a member of the Corporation, Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where he concentrated on the study of marine bioluminescence and hydrothermal vents to understand the source (s) of light seen at some deep sea vents.

The collection includes Dr. Reynolds' reports on the Port Chicago, California disaster of 1944, in which an ammunition ship had blown up in the harbor. Dr. Reynolds was one of the naval officers sent to investigate, and was tasked with estimating the size of the explosion. Also of note are photographs of preparations on Tinian Island in the Marianas and copies of pilot's records following the atomic bomb blast over Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan during World War II.
