Abstract

Ashley Montagu (1905-1999), physical anthropologist, was a prominent figure in American intellectual life. British by birth, educated at University College London and the London School of Economics, then Columbia University in New York City, Montagu was a persistent advocate for gender and racial equality. He was a tireless activist for human understanding and child welfare in particular. Departing from academe in 1955, a victim of McCarthyite hysteria, he was a remarkably prolific writer and speaker, eventually publishing more than 50 books, over 40 of them after he left the academy. Montagu continued to lobby passionately against the primacy of race in discussions of intellect and skill, and undertook works in a wide variety of fields, from evolution to parenting. Some of his most significant works include Man's Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race (1942), the UNESCO Statement on Race (1951), Man and Aggression (1968) and his novel The Elephant Man (1971), which became the basis for an award winning play and movie. Ashley Montagu's contributions to the spread of scientific knowledge and human understanding make him one of the most important intellectuals of the 20th century.

Background note

Ashley Montagu, born Israel Ehrenberg on June 28, 1905, was a British-American anthropologist, specializing in the areas of race and gender issues, as well as a prolific speaker and author, publishing over 50 books in his lifetime. The son of Jewish tailor Charles Ehrenberg and his wife, Mary Plot Ehrenberg, Montagu was born and raised in London's working class East End neighborhood. Although the reasoning behind his name change was never revealed, it may have been due to anti-Semitic prejudice faced by many East End Jews during his childhood, and Montagu might have felt the need to distance himself from his parents' Russian and Polish backgrounds.

Montagu earned his undergraduate degree from University College London in psychology and anthropology. After studying anthropology at the London School of Economics under Bronislaw Malinowski, Montagu left England for the United States. He arrived at New York City in 1927 and began taking graduate classes at Columbia University. Montagu then traveled to Italy in 1928, where he took classes in ethnography and anthropology at the University of Florence. Upon his return to the United States in 1931, while working as an assistant professor of anthropology at New York University, Montagu married Marjorie Peakes. The couple would have two daughters, Audrey and Barbara, as well as a son, Geoffrey. In 1934 Montagu returned to Columbia University, culminating his postgraduate work at Columbia in 1936 with his dissertation, Coming into being among the Australian Aborigines: A study of the procreative beliefs of the native tribes of Australia, produced under the direction of Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict. Based largely on his dissertation, Montagu's first book, Coming into Being among the Australian Aborigines, was published in 1937.

After he completed his education, Montagu taught anatomy at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia in 1938 and became an American citizen in 1940. It was during his time at Hahnemann that he began to produce work relating to race, resulting in his seminal work, Man's Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race, published in 1942. The work controversially advanced the argument that race was a social construct imposed upon a complex biological substratum and demolished the arguments for inherent inequality between human populations. The influential nature of Man's Most Dangerous Myth led to Montagu's service on the 4th United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) task force, in 1949. The ten member UNESCO committee, composed of such world-renowned social scientists as Claude Levi-Strauss and E. Franklin Frazier, was created to collect information about the problem of race and to establish educational programs to disseminate its findings. The resultant document, authored by Montagu, the group's rapporteur, was published as the "Statement on Race" in 1951. The Committee's final statement on race asserted: 1)All mankind belong to the same species and that the differences between groups are few compared to all of the genetic similarities. 2)That Race designates a group with high frequency of physical characteristics or particular genetic trait and that these traits fluctuate or even disappear over time. 3)The way in which people are grouped does not reflect the capacity or character traits of a particular group. The differences between races are physical and have no correlation with other traits like intelligence.

Upon leaving Hahnemann Medical College in 1949, Montagu moved to Rutgers University, where he was a professor of anthropology and head of the department from 1949 to 1955. While at Rutgers, Montagu wrote perhaps his most famous work, The Natural Superiority of Women, published in 1953. Examining the differences between the sexes anthropologically, Montagu concluded that women were the superior sex because they possessed a better capability to survive both as individuals and in groups- talents necessary for an advancing society. Based on these conclusions, he suggested that women receive equal pay for equal work, a controversial stance at the time.

With his prolific writing skills to rely on financially, and facing strong backlash for his openly liberal views and anti-McCarthy public statements, Montagu accepted a forced retirement from Rutgers in 1955 at the age of 50. Though retired from academic life, he continued to lecture at such institutions as Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Santa Barbara, and New York University. Settling in Princeton, New Jersey, Montagu's work took up a more humanist element with Touching: The Human Significance of the Skin, his effort to encourage parents to take a more physical role in raising their children and especially to encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies. Published during that same year, Montagu's book The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity, a history of the life of disfigured Briton Joseph Merrick, inspired a Tony winning play and later a motion picture. He continued publishing through the 1980s, including The Nature of Human Aggression (1976) and Growing Young (1981), while making numerous and notable television appearances on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show as well as the Phil Donahue Show.

In his lifetime, Montagu received many major awards, among them the American Association of Humanists' 1995 Man of the Year award, the Darwin Award from the American Association of Physical Anthropologist in 1994, and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Anthropological Association in 1987. Montagu maintained an active schedule of lecturing and gardening around his Princeton, New Jersey, home until he was hospitalized in March 1999; he died on November 26, 1999 from heart disease, at the age of ninety-four. He was survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Marjorie, as well as his son and two daughters.

Collection overview

 25.25 linear feet

Series I consists of Ashley Montagu's correspondence with various colleagues and scholars over the course of his entire professional life, as well as correspondence with friends and fans. Of particular interest is his correspondence with Theodosius Dobzhansky, Bronislaw Malinowski, and Albert Einstein. There are four letters to Montagu from Einstein and copies of Montagu's responses. The bulk of the correspondence is incoming.

 3.5 linear feet

Series II is comprised of Montagu's correspondence with the many publishers he worked with in over 50 years of writing. The chief correspondent is Oxford University Press, publisher of Man and Aggression and Race and IQ.

 12.75 linear feet

Series III consists of works by Ashley Montagu, related notes, and correspondence; reviews of individual works are also included. It contains complete book manuscripts, as well as journal and popular magazine articles. Much of the series is comprised of undated manuscripts of both published and unpublished articles, typewritten by Montagu. Also included are class notes taken by Montagu during his time as a graduate student at Columbia University from classes taught by Ruth Benedict and Franz Boas, as well as course materials from classes he taught at Harvard. Book reviews written by Montagu are included, as well as works by other authors that were included in works edited by Montagu. Unpublished poems authored by Montagu are also included, which highlight the diversity of his interests and abilities.

 1.25 linear feet

Series IV consists of correspondence, transcripts and ephemera from Montagu's appearances on television and radio, as well as his many speaking engagements. The bulk of the material is from the 1980s, when Montagu was most active.

 0.5 linear feet

Series V is made up of material from Montagu's time at Princeton University. While not a professor there, Montagu served many years as a lecturer and a fellow at Princeton's Stevenson Hall. The series consists of class materials, student evaluations, and correspondence to and from the University, the Stevenson Hall administration, and the Library Advisory Council, on which Montagu served.

 5.0 linear feet

Series VI is comprised of works by others, and greatly reflects Montagu's varied interests: racial and social equality, women's rights, child development, humanistic psychology and genetics. These interests are represented by the works of many influential people in the aforementioned fields, such as Henry Louis Gates Jr., Theodosius Dobzhansky, Mary S. Calderone, J.B.S. Haldane, Arthur Jensen, A.H. Maslow, Benjamin Pasamanick and many others. Montagu remained well read in the works of those authors he did not always agree with, especially the racial and eugenic theories of men like Jensen and Haldane, so while the series does not accurately reflect the entirety of Montagu's opinions, it is a great resource for discovering his sphere of interest.

 1.75 linear feet

Series VII consists of material relating to the various committees and organizations that in which Montagu participated. From the early sixties until 1996, Montagu served as the chairperson of the Cleveland Foundation's Anisfield-Wolf Book Award prize jury, and consequently much of this series consists of Anisfield-Wolf Book Award material. Also prevalent is material relating to a number of childbirth and educational groups.

 0.25 linear feet

Series VIII contains certificates and awards received by Ashley Montagu. A majority of the series dates to the 1990s, and is largely made up of lifetime achievement awards.

 0.5 linear feet

Series IX, Montagu's personal information, contains a wide variety of items. From a primary school grade sheet, to his admission certificate to Columbia University, to his curriculum vitae, and even obituaries, the series spans his entire life. Also included is information regarding Montagu's Princeton home, passports and tax documents, memorabilia from his England home and personal financial documents, among other ephemera.

 3.0 linear feet

Series X, the printed materials series, consists of published works and reprints authored mainly by others, but including one work by Montagu himself. Also included are bound volumes, magazines and newsletters, as well as trial transcripts from the William Shockley libel lawsuit against Cox Enterprises from 1984, for which Montagu was deposed.

 1.5 linear feet

Series XI consists of photographs. Included are portraits of Montagu for professional use, as well as candid snapshots of Montagu with family and friends. Also incorporated are photos taken sure Montagu's conversations with Einstein at the latter's Princeton, New Jersey, home, as well as various other photographs Montagu acquired through the course of his studies and teaching tenures. Series XI also contains photos removed from correspondence for conservation purposes, as well as an assortment of photographs of Montagu's friends and acquaintances.

 0.5 linear feet

Series XII contains audio and visual recordings of Montagu at various speaking engagements, as well as audio recordings of Montagu's radio debates with William Shockley.
