Scope and content

Two drawings of the Edystone Lantern, Devon England given to Benjamin Franklin and loaned to David Rittenhouse 1776 October 21. See Franklin's account book, no. 7, 1757-1776.

Designed by John Smeaton (1724-1792) and completed in 1759. The Eddystone Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built on a small group of rocks in the open sea.

The drawing of the chandelier detail was in a folder in the M24 print collection with title: "Architectural Element, Unidentified". The drawing was identified and added to the folder with the lantern drawing in the manuscript collection. 11/8/2018.
