Date: 1917-1964 | Size: 6 Linear feet, Ca. 2,500 items

Abstract

This collection consists chiefly of papers and correspondence relating to his work in developing vaccines for various viruses and bacteria, such as encephalitides, typhus, rickettsioses, poliomyelitis, meningococcus, and trachoma. Also includes materials on intraperitoneal protection tests, records of experiments on production of intranuclear inclusions by means of chemicals, results of work by Dr. Herald Rea Cox on viruses, medical research during World War II, and materials relating to the Rockefeller Institute. There are also corrected proofs of "Viral Encephalitides" (Springfield, Ill., 1958).

Background note

Peter K. Olitsky was a pathologist.

Ca. 2,500 items.

Provenance

Presented by Mrs. Peter K. Olitsky and the Rockefeller Institute and accessioned, 1965 (1965 846ms).

Physiology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics Note

The career of Peter Kosciusko Olitsky at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research spanned more than three decades, a period that included basic research in virology, biomedical war projects (World Wars I and II), travel to Europe and to China to investigate viral epidemics, and work on animal and plant viruses for the United States Department of Agriculture. The collection documents these major aspects of Olitsky's career. The papers are a good source for tracing important episodes in virology research, such as studies of plant and animal viruses, neurotropic viruses, the problem of poliomyelitis, and aspects related to the development of the Sabin and Salk vaccines. Olitsky's virus research is highlighted by correspondence and laboratory research materials, and includes records of experiments, development of vaccines, and medical war research. The collection is also a valuable source on the relation of microbiology to government projects and military needs.
