Date: 1844-1918 | Size: 49 Linear feet, Ca. 18,000 items

Abstract

[The following comprises the original Abstract, which will be significantly revised.] >>> These are notes, sketches, memoranda, etc., made while Lyman directed the geological survey of Japan, 1873-1879, with reports on petroleum resources, copper, coal, iron, and gold mines, oil, mineral springs, and other mineral resources of the Japanese archipelago. There are data on the Japanese, Chinese, Ainu, and French languages, and on Japanese manners and customs, wit and humor, gardening, painting, measurements, swords, etc. Notes and data on the life, travels, and publications of Bernard Varenius. Notes collected for Lyman's Vegetarian Diet and Dishes. Materials on the geology of New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, and West Virginia; and on coal and iron fields in those states and elsewhere. Manuscripts of articles on instruments for boring wells, theodolites for mining and civil engineers, other surveying instruments, etc. >>> Of particular note is Lyman's period of study in Europe, where he attended the Imperial School of Mines in Paris, France (1859-1861), and the Royal Academy of Mines, Freiberg, Germany (1861-1862). There are about eleven notebooks for this period, written in English, French, and German, that contain: lecture notes, travel observations, comments on geology, mines and mining, railroads, with sketches of machinery, etc. There are a large number of letters (ca. 7,000 items), 1850-1917, from and to Lyman, on personal and business affairs.

Background note

Benjamin Smith Lyman (1835-1920) studied geology and mining engineering in France and in Germany. He worked with J. Peter Lesley in the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, and later worked on the Iowa Geological Survey. Lyman was surveyor of the coal fields of Cape Breton Island and Nova Scotia and of the gold fields of California, and he worked on many other geological and topographical surveys in the United States. Overseas he worked briefly as geologist for the India Public Works Department, in 1870. He worked for several years in Japan, having been appointed general geologist and mining engineer for the empire in 1873. His work in Japan was as the result of the formative years of the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912), which opened Japan to the western world. There is as yet [2017] no comprehensive biographical treatment of the man and his work.

Collection Information

Physical description

Ca. 18,000 items, 49 linear feet.

Provenance

Deposited by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 1942.

Custodial history:

Originally in the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP), since 2011 the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. Deposited with American Philosophical Society (APS), 1942. Date and circumstances of acquisition by ANSP not recorded. Benjamin Smith Lyman was a member both of APS and ANSP.

Processing information

Received by American Philosophical Society (APS) on deposit from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP), 1942, apparently as a wholly unprocessed collection, mostly still in envelopes as labelled by Lyman. The collection was rehoused and arranged very generally at APS, at an unknown time, which arrangement seems to reflect the box arrangement as received from ANSP but which comprised overlapping series, misidentified materials, and mixed (unsorted) materials. Most material still was kept in envelopes labelled by Lyman, and within those envelopes many documents were folded, often several times. The correspondence series of the collection was arranged in chronological order by Albert Prime (volunteer, APS) under the direction of Charles Greifenstein (Manuscripts Librarian, APS) ca. 2010. The non-correspondence series of the collection were processed by Earle E. Spamer (Reference Archivist, APS), 2013-2014. (Spamer was also ANSP Archivist, 2001-2005.) Topical analysis of most of the Japanese-language materials was provided by Brian Carpenter (APS) in 2010, 2013 and 2014. Many additional oversized materials were rediscovered in uncataloged materials by Valerie Lutz (Head of Manuscripts Processing, APS) late in 2015 [these now comprise Oversize Collection 4 within Series XIII] and by David Gary (APS) in 2017. These materials also were part of the deposit from ANSP and had been unfolded to oversized housings at an undetermined time; they were processed into the collection by Spamer in February 2016 and May 2017.

Note regarding language of materials in this collection

This collection is mostly in English but contains a large number of documents in Japanese, including correspondence and reports. A few documents containing Chinese characters also are noted. Some additional papers and notebooks are in French and German. Miscellaneous documents in other languages are included in Series VI.

Note regarding artwork in the collection

The material in this collection derived from the Geological Survey of Japan (Series VIII and corresponding portions of the Oversized series), principally in the 1870s, includes a number of fine pieces of artwork by Japanese workers, mostly in pencil and ink on washi; some of these items are colored. These usually are graphical depictions of landscapes, on which one will see places and activities relating to mining and oil production. They represent not only informative scientific illustration, but they are excellent forms of Japanese art. Individual items of artwork are noticed as such in the finding aid.

Note regarding authorship of documents.

All documents in this collection are by Benjamin Smith Lyman except where indicated otherwise. Most of the correspondence (Series I) is inbound to Lyman. In all series except Series I, documents are listed alphabetically by title; but when an author's name is known, the folder is listed under the author's surname within the alphabetical order. Some Japanese documents in other series of this collection, received by Lyman, are attributed by him to authors he identified only by an initial within a circle; e.g., "A." or "Q.", which information is retained in this finding aid.

Note regarding folder titles.

Many folder titles are enclosed within quotation marks. These indicate actual document titles, OR notations that were written by B. S. Lyman on the original envelopes in which he had stored these documents. The highly acidic original envelopes were discarded after the envelope notations were transcribed to the present folders when the collection was fully processed in 2013/2014. Thus, titles in quotations are not always on the documents themselves. If a title is in quotation marks but does not appear on the document iteself, this indicates that the folder title is Lyman's own notation as APS transcribed it from a since-discarded envelope; this constitutes some measure of Lyman's original arrangement. A folder title that is NOT inside quotation marks indicates a generally descriptive term contrived by APS to indicate the folder's contents. When the collection was received at APS, a great number of documents were still tightly folded inside Lyman's envelopes. These were unfolded and most of them now comprise the oversized-materials components of this collection.

Note regarding page or leaf counts.

Where the number of "leaves" is counted for the amount of material in a folder, it reflects the number of sheets of paper in the folder. In the case of numerous documents written in Japan (either in English or in Japanese) on the Japanese paper, washi, many documents are composed of bound sets of double-folded sheets of washi, on which writing appears usually on the "outside" portions of the folded sheet; but in some instances, individual flat sheets of washi are interleaved in the document. Rather than contrive the number of "pages" -- except where the pages are enumerated -- the number of leaves of washi is counted rather than the number of sides on which writing appears: a single unfolded sheet is one leaf, and one folded sheet with writing on the outsides is one leaf.

Note regarding undated materials from Lyman's years in Japan

Many undated documents written on the Japanese paper, washi, may be assumed from both context and materials to have been created during the years when B. S. Lyman worked for the Geological Survey of Japan. He seems not have have used any supplies of washi after he left Japan.
