Abstract

These are copies of letters and printed and mimeographed reports relating principally to breakwaters at Aransas Pass, Texas, and Manasquan Inlet, N.J. There are also 12 blueprints and 7 drawings of devices for reclaiming beaches.

Background note

Lewis Muhlenberg Haupt was a civil engineer and a member of the Isthmian Canal Commission. He was awarded the Magellanic Premium in 1887 for his discovery in physical hydrography and for his invention of a system of harbor improvement. The award was given by the American Philosophical Society following the receipt of his essay, "The Physical Phenomena of Harbor Entrances, Their Causes and Remedies."
