Abstract

Principally covering botany and agriculture, this collection includes many manuscripts on trees, shrubs, and plants of different species, copies of botanical essays by others, essays on fruit trees, etc., by Auguste Denis Fougeroux de Bondaroy (1732-89), notes and drafts for the latter's revision of Duhamel's Traité des Arbres et Arbustres. Also miscellaneous essays, sketches, and memoranda on bones of birds and animals, electricity, fish, steam engines, ventilation, temperature and air pressure, mathmatics, paleontology ("Observations sur les os d'éléphants fossiles"), chemistry, metallurgy, entomology, architecture, taxidermy ("Méthode pour empailler les oiseaux"); lists of plants; notes on England, Canada, Mexico, China; notes of reading in Pliny, John Evelyn, Alexander Russell, William Derham, and others. An unpublished translation of Jethro Tull's Horse-Hoeing Husbandry, with additions and revisions by Duhamel du Monceau. An alphabetical catalogue of Duhamel's gardens, prepared by Fougeroux de Bondaroy. The collection has manuscript material in pre-publication form along with published material with marginalia for improvements of later editions. There are a multitude of sketches, botanical materials and seed packets. The collection includes lists of American trees and seeds shared with European scientists. Benjamin Franklin acts as a go between French and American botanists and John Bartram sends seeds to France from his garden. Also correspondence (ca. 170 pieces) with, among others, Peter Collinson, Duc d'Aven, Duc de Noailles, Louis J. M. Daubenton, Mathurin Jacques Brisson, Jean François Gauthier, Comte de La Galissonière, Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, Emerich Vattel. The collection has been described in part by Gilbert Chinard, "Recently Acquired Botanical Documents," APS Proc. 101 (1957): 508: and by Joseph Ewan, "Fougeroux de Bondaroy (1732-1789) and his Projected Revision of Duhamel du Monceau's Traité (1755) on Trees and Shrubs. I. An Analytical Guide to Persons, Gardens, and Works mentioned in the Manuscripts," APS Proc. 103 (1959): 807.

In the 1750s they were charged by the Academie to write volumes for the Description des arts et des metiers. Both were elected to the Academie des sciences and Duhamel du Monceau was a fellow of the Royal Society, London.

1786-1789 Box 23

Ten notebooks of minutes and meetings of the Academy of Sciences by Fougeroux de Bondaroy. 'Their form is similar to the official minutes, but Fougeroux de Bondaroy also gives supplementary information about the meetings. For example, he notes several votes taken in the Academy, candidates for posts, and administrative discussions (e.g. naming referees, how to handle 'secrets' submitted to the Academy). He includes several reports and a few sketches and sometimes he makes private asides, for example when he notes an election won by Bougainville, "M. Lavoisier read M. Moreau's work with a lot of emphasis," or after another meeting, "So much for the effort wasted in deliberating.""James E. McClellan III, Professor of History of Science, 1999.

 Tull, Jethro, 1674-1741.
Traite du labourage et de la vegetation. . . Traduction. . .Jethro Tull by Duhamel du Monceau
ca. 1748 1 volume(s) 186 pages volume 7

This is the manuscript of a translation of Jethro Tull's work sent to Duhamel du Monceau for review with a letter from Lord le Chancelier. The translation from English to French was by M. Gottlort. Duhamel du Monceau was the third person to translate Tull's work. First, Marshal of Noailles engaged a man named M. Otter of l'Academie des Belles-Lettres,and M. de Buffon reviewed M. Otter's work, second was M. Gottlort and third was Duhamel du Monceau. "During his tour in Europe,Tull compared the agriculture of France and Italy with that of his own country, and returning home he experimented on his estate some improvements. He described his achievements in 1733 in Horse-hoeing husbandry. He recommended a new more productive system based on the introduction of clover and sainfoin. The author criticized the use of dung and believed that dispensing with fallows and fertilizing the soil by continuous ploughing would produce more wheat. When Duhamel du Monceau was asked to translate the book, he decided to experiment with these principles himself and the result was his Traité de la culture des terres (1750) that further popularized Tull's ideas."
