Abstract:  

Physician John Wakefield Francis (1789-1861) cofounded the New York Academy of Medicine. He served as the second president of the Academy, taught at Bellevue Hospital, wrote medical texts, and edited professional journals. Collection consists of correspondence, financial papers, writings, by-laws and minutes, and related papers of Francis and others. Correspondence of others include letters to Francis's associates and family members. Financial documents, 1798-1851, are accounts, receipts, receipt books, checks, and collection notices. Writings are speeches, lectures and notes of Francis and others. Also, minutes and by-laws, 1807-1810, of the Medical and Surgical Society of the University of New York State; and printed material.

Some are for monies collected for the American Philosophical Society, and for Major Zebulon Pike's expedition (1811). The names of Samuel Breck, James Mease, Robert Millegan, and John Vaughan appear. Under date of Feb. 11, 1804 is receipt signed by Jn. Vaughan for admission fee to the American Philosophical Society.

These papers include letters from relatives, friends, and former students, chiefly on family affairs, social events, and schools in Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Also included are receipts for personal expenditures, and letters of recommendation for teaching positions and from J. P. Lesley for admission to Yale College, where Moore received the Ph.B. degree in 1855. Moore was Lesley's assistant in preparing the Pennsylvania Railroad maps of western Pennsylvania.

These selections include letters, bills, accounts, receipts, memoranda, and official communications and documents relating to the Iroquois in New York state, selected from volumes 6-15 of O'Reilly's collections, "Mementos of western settlement," together with copies of documents from the American State Papers, etc. Included are letters of Phelps, Gorham, Chapin, Brant, Kirkland, Knox, Pickering, Irvine, and Morris. Many manuscripts appear to be from the papers of General Israel Chapin, an Indian agent.

A collection of letters, legal papers and financial records of three generations of the prominent Philadelphia family. Spanning 1745-1955, detailed are the legal cases and political advocacy work of John Kintzing Kane (1795-1858), Robert Patterson Kane (1827-1906), and Francis Fisher Kane (1866-1955). Also includes correspondence, architectural drawings, and photograph albums of the Cope family. Robert Patterson Kane's daughter Eliza Middleton Kane (1863-1952) married the Philadelphia architect Walter Cope (1860-1902) in 1893. The APS papers of Elisha Kent Kane are in call no. B K132.
