A unique and invaluable research tool, this card file is an index of names and places and alphabetical abstracts of Philadelphia newspaper items and advertisements for the period covering ca. 1718-1795. Roach made a systematic search through eighteenth-century newspapers and several other sources, for biographical and subject information on Philadelphians and Pennsylvanians of the period. It is primarily biographical , but subject headings, such as "The Barracks," "Blue Lion, Sign of the," "Custom House," are scattered throughout. The source of each entry is cited, and there are brief annotations.

This collection contains biographical material on William Parsons, a Pennsylvania soldier, surveyor, and proprietary agent of the provincial government and Thomas Penn. It is arranged by repositories and collections containing information on Parsons (including the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, and the Horsfield Papers at the American Philosophical Society). There are transcripts from sources, photostats, notes, and microfilm.

These documents are principally of Pennsylvania interest, 1757-1809, including letters to Richard I. Manning from John C. Calhoun, Marquis de Lafayette, George McDuffie, and William Wirt. There are also letters of Clement C. Biddle, James Buchanan, Francis J. Grund, James Madison, Timothy Pickering, and William H. Seward. In addition, there are several musical scores (n.d.) and 19 cancelled checks (1861-1871) drawn by Ticknor and Fields in Boston, to the order of various American authors.

This small but rich collection of letters and documents concern the Shippen family of Pennsylvania. The subjects of the letters are varied and include domestic details, military affairs of the Revolution and the Pennsylvania frontier, politics, trade, and business.

The Calendar of the Papers of Benjamin Franklin prepared by Isaac Minis Hays for the bicentennial of Franklin's birth in 1906 provides access to the largest portion of the Franklin Papers at the APS. The items were originally bound into volumes in roughly chronological order, with letters to Franklin preceding those from Franklin and at the end of the collection, Franklin's letters owned by the University of Pennsylvania. Each manuscript is still identified by Hays' reference numbers, which include a roman numeral refering to the original volume followed by an arabic number to identify the folio. The electronic version of the finding aid replicates Hays' calendar, including the introductory material and item-level descriptions. It has been updated to reflect corrections in the metadata, corrections of personal names, dates, and description.

From the Board of Trustees of the Estate of Stephen Girard, these films are the complete archive of one of the largest mercantile and financial operations in the United States of his day. The collection includes correpondence, with translations of letters in French (139 reels). It also includes bank records, account books, ledgers, cash books, and journals; papers, documents, and records of trading voyages (arranged by vessel and date); records of Girard's country house, "The Place"; records of real estate, rents, etc.; prices current of ports of the world.
