Seated frontally, the sitter directs his gaze toward the viewer’s left in three-quarter profile. Tilghman wears a dark overcoat and a translucent white cravat tied in a loose bow at the neck. His somewhat rectangular face is rendered in fleshy detail, with a naturalistically figured double chin, sagging cheeks, and clear eyes.
