These letters refer to the exchange of various plants, to botany in general, and to the operation of Kew. There is mention as well of the plants of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

These are letters to Woodward, usually only one letter per correspondent, concerning his professional appointments, and botanical and geological research and publications. There is also scattered information regarding the Geological Society of London, and the British Museum, but little substantive material on Woodward himself.

Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was an eminent Victorian-era biologist, best known as a passionate defender and popularizer of Darwin's theory of evolution. His partisanship earned him the nickname of "Darwin's Bulldog," although he did not accept the theory uncritically. In addition to his work in biology, he performed original research in zoology and paleontology. He is also remembered as the progenitor of a family of highly successful scientists and thinkers. This collection is made up of letters, primarily written by Huxley, on a variety of topics including the age of man, evolution, education, natural history, science, geology, spiritualism, and vivisection. The most voluminous correspondence is with Sir James Thomas Knowles (30 letters) and with Huxley's daughter, Ethel Huxley Collier, "Babs," (44 items). The 30 letters to Knowles appear in neither the Life and Letters, nor are they listed in Dawson's guide to the Huxley Papers at the Imperial College. The other major correspondents include Charles Edward C. Appleton, Matthew Arnold, William B. Carpenter, Sir Henry Cole, George Dixon, Sir John Donnelly, Thomas Campbell Eyton, Sir William Henry Flower, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, Leonard Huxley, Sir William Jenner, Sir Charles Lyell, Louis Compton Miall, Alphonse Milne-Edwards, Sir James Paget, Harry Quilter, Harry Govier Seeley, Alfred R. Wallace, and William Crawford Williamson.

This microfilm of Somerville's papers was compiled by Elizabeth C. Patterson for her book, "Mary Somerville and the Cultivation of Science, 1815-1840" (Boston: Martinus Nijhoff, 1983). It includes Somerville's scientific writings, personal writings, "letters from celebrities," family papers, genealogy, and photographs. Subjects of some of her writings include astronomy, Halley's comet, effects of light, and physical geography.

This collection of Morton letters forms part of a bound volume of incoming correspondence. It is a companion volume to the original letters in the Morton collection at the American Philosophical Society, which were also originally bound. Most of the subjects of the two collections overlap, but additional subjects in the microfilmed collection include American Indians, archaeology, Egyptology, and phrenology.

This collection contains miscellaneous letters and papers relating to explorations of South America, Cuba, and Mexico; scientific investigations; Latin American antiquities and linguistics; and publications. There are also copies of 26 letters from Humboldt to Pierre Hyacinth Azais and Jules Berger de Xivrey, from originals at the Duke University Medical Center Library.

From negative microfilm held by Dr. Leonard G. Wilson, the collection consists mostly of incoming correspondence from English and American scientists, with a small section of correspondence from Lyell.

There is correspondence concerning geology, botany, natural history, natural selection, evolution, British science and scientists, and other scientific topics. Most of the letters are written by Lyell, with a very few items by others.

Through his craniometic studies of human races, the Philadelphia physician Samuel George Morton (1799-1851) exerted a profound influence on the development of physical anthropology in antebellum America, and made substantial contributions to mineralogy, paleontology, and natural history. Relating primarily to Morton's scientific interests, the Morton Papers include insights into Morton's perspectives on education, medical practice, geology and mineralogy, craniology, paleontology, the Wilkes Exploring Expedition (also known as the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842), and his two major monographs, the Crania Americana and Crania Aegyptiaca. Several of the letters were written by Morton in his capacity as corresponding secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Also included in this collection are Morton's "Some Remarks on the Infrequency of Mixed Offspring Between the European and Australian Races" (1850), Joseph Barclay Pentland's notes on the aborigines of Peru (ca. 1840?), and newspaper clippings on Morton's death; a diary of Morton's trip to the West Indies, 1834, a set of craniological sketches for use in Crania Americana, and a microfilm of letters in private hands, written to Morton, 1838-1844
