There are nine items on this reel, including letters concerning Indian affairs at Detroit, Indian lands and surveys of Moravian Indian lands on the Muskingum (with maps), estimates of settlers north of the Ohio (1793), and a report concerning the conduct of the British respecting the Indian war (1793).

Kampman copied this document at the request of John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder "for the information of the [American] Philosophical Society," and Heckewelder transmitted it to the Society.

These are eighteen letters that mostly concern Indian linguistics. Regarding Zeisberger's Onondaga grammar and dictionary; Heckewelder's writings on the Indians; publications; question of whether or not any of the Lenape can pronounce the letter "r."

This is a journal of travels among the Indians to a conference in Detroit. Includes a list of the names of different Indian nations in North America, their locations, and number of fighting men. Also contains miscellaneous materials: a letter from Heckewelder to Mordecai Churchman, October 5, 1819; engraving of Heckewelder; letter of Maria Heckewelder to Matthew S. Henry requesting him to relinquish the volume and some Heckewelder letters.

There are observations from 1802 to 1810 made by Heckewelder at Gnadenhütten, Pennsylvania, which continue those he made for 1800 [published in "Philadelphia Medical and Physical Journal" 1,2 (1805): 134]. There are also observations from 1810 to 1814 made by George G. Miller at Beersheba, Ohio, and from September 1-7, 1800 made by Christian Frederick Denke at Fairfield, Upper Canada [the latter printed in "Philadelphia Medical and Physical Journal" 1,2 (1805): 142].

Place names (taken from deeds of conveyance and maps, and narrated by Indians) for Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia, together with names and biographies of chiefs and famous men. Translations included.

Letters relating to American Indian languages, Moravian missionaries, various Heckewelder publications. Some of the replies from Du Ponceau are copied in the letter books of the Historical and Literary Committee.

Six editorial corrections to Heckewelder, "Account of the history, manners, and customs of the Indian nations, who once inhabited Pennsylvania and the neighboring states, Transactions of the Historical and Literary Committee of the APS (1819) 1: 1-348; with page references, "in case a new Edition ever is made. Concerns religion, warfare, marriage and family life, childbirth, swimming, and fears. Never printed. Prepared for John Vaughan, but should be compared with Heckewelder's suggestions for revision in his correspondence with Du Ponceau.

This one-volune collection, consisting of three manuscripts bound together, was previously named "Names of various trees, shrubs, and plants in the language of the Lennape [sic], 1840" after one of the manuscripts in it. It consists of Nottoway terms, organized according to a variety of categories; a Lenape (Delaware) word list relating to English botanical terms, along with Latin terms; and an English-Algonquian-Lenape comparative vocabulary.

These papers include letters, reports, and journals relating to Indians, Moravian missions, and communities at Salem (N.C.), Bethlehem (Pa.), and Gnadenhütten, Muskingum, and Fairfield in Upper Canada. Also included are personal correspondence and an autobiography. Contains 86 letters, journals, reports, etc., pertaining to the travels and missionary activities of Heckewelder, mostly in German. 7 journals, memoranda, and miscellaneous materials of David Zeisberger, pertaining to his years with Indians. Many of the former materials were utilized and published by Paul A. W. Wallace (1958); the latter includes Zeisberger's Memoranda on Indians; Journey to the Six Nations, Nanticokes and Shawanees in April, 1752, to July, 1752; Conrad Weiser, Observations made on the pamphlet entitled "An enquiry ... [1759]"; Birth records for the 1780's at Friedenshutten and Gnadenhütten; Catalogue of Indians baptized by the United Brethren, 1765-1814 (721 names); and a memorandum of Zeisberger on the Onondaga.

The Paul A. W. Wallace Papers include correspondence to and from 20th century anthropologists, ethnologists, historians, linguists, and psychiatrists and provides a wealth of resources for the study of technological and social change, American Indians, culture and personality, revitalization movements, the anthropological study of religion, and the cultural and biological bases of behavior. The collection includes extensive correspondence with fellow scholars and Indian consultants, interviews with Indians of the Six Nations Reserve in Canada, and notes and photographs collected during his fieldwork among the Indians of New York State, Pennsylvania, and Canada.

The Scientists Collection is comprised of individual letters and small groups of correspondence from American, British, French, and German scientists during the past three centuries. Although the content is highly varied, there is significant strength in astronomy, natural history, conchology, and geology. Among the scientists better represented in the collection are the astronomers William Radcliffe Birt, J.F.W. Herschel, and Franz Xaver von Zach; the conchologists A.D. Brown, Fred L. Button, Otto Mörch, Alfred Newton, Christian M. Poulsen, Temple Prime, Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy, and A. G. Wetherby; the physical scientists George Biddell Airy, Arnold Sommerfeld, Ferdinand R. Hassler, and Max Planck; the archaeologist Jean François Nadaillac; the philosopher William Whewell; and the naturalists Walter Henry Bates, Robert Chambers, Edme Dupuget, Robert Kaye Greville, Joseph Henry, John Stevens Henslow, John Lubbock, and Herbert Spencer.

A pioneer in ethnographic and linguistic studies of the American Indian and one of the most active members of the American Philosophical Society, Peter Stephen Du Ponceau helped to establish the American Philosophical Society's reputation as one of the world's foremost centers for the study of American Indians and their languages. The Peter Stephen Du Ponceau collection consists of correspondence on legal matters, Indian linguistics, silk culture, maritime law, the American Philosophical Society, and various publications of the early nineteenth century. The collection also includes several essays by Du Ponceau, most of which deal with maritime law.
