This small collection contains manuscripts of her book reviews (1943-1947), correspondence with Christopher C. Booth [co-editor of "Chain of Friendship: Selected Letters of Dr. John Fothergill" (1971)] and with Amy E. Wallis, the owner of the Fothergill family papers in England. There are a couple of letters from Charles Joseph Singer and Francis Peyton Rous, but most of the correspondence is personal.

All but one of these letters are to Charles Alston, the professor of botany at Edinburgh University, and concern medicine, botany, and science in general. They are dated between 1737 and 1750. One letter is to George Whately, dated 1778.

This journal was kept while Shippen was a student of medicine in London under Dr. Colin McKenzie and Dr. William Hunter. Notable people mentioned are Dennys De Berdt, Mark Akenside, George Whitefield, John Fothergill, David Garrick, and Thomas Penn.

This autobiography relates Rush's experiences in college and medical school; his meetings with notable doctors; his life in Scotland, England, and France; his medical views; the military and politics during the Revolutionary War; and brief sketches of personalities of that period.

This microfilm contains letters and drafts of replies, memoranda, lists of plants and shrubs, observations on natural history, diary notes, extracts from reading, and recipes. There is a "Catalogue of Books given to [Friends] Publick School of Philadelphia" by Collinson dated 1749. There is a copy by Collinson of a May 16, 1560 note by Elizabeth I of a gift of old clothes to her maids of honor. A 1811 letter is from C. S. Collinson to Aylmer Bourke Lambert.

The collection includes letters between Hutchinson and his uncle Israel Pemberton, written while Hutchinson was a student of medicine in London. There are also 12 tickets of admission to medical lectures in Philadelphia and London, including one given by William Hunter, and 3 unused cards of admission to Hutchinson's own lectures. Miscellaneous items include Hutchinson's marriage certificate; genealogical data on the Hutchinson, Hare, and Pemberton families; and stock certificates, 1857-1872, of the McKean and Elk Land and Improvement Company. Materials dated post-1793 are to and from Hutchinson family members.

These letters of American Philosophical Society members and prominent early American scientists were selected from Carson's extra-illustrated draft of "A History of the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania" (Philadelphia, 1869).
