This volume, written by an unknown author, describes general principles of physics, with numerous sketches illustrating the text. There are a few notations in Spanish by Juan Bastolleros.

This list was kept on Smith's travels in France and Switzerland, and includes notes by John Vaughan from whose scrapbook these sheets were removed in 1959.

These journeys of botanical exploration include information regarding plants, and his remarks on the condition of remote settlements he visited. The journals cover the territory from Hudson's Bay to the Indian River in Florida, and from the Bahama Islands to the banks of the Mississippi.

This small volume records excerpts from British natural philosophy and scientific journals, written sometime after 1799. It covers a wide range of subjects, from astronomy to zoology.

An early Welsh emigrant to Pennsylvania, David Evans was educated at Yale (1713) before answering the call to Presbyterian pulpits in the Welsh Tract of Delaware and Pennsylvania, and to the church at Pilesgrove, N.J. Written entirely in Latin in 1747 when Evans was 66 years old, the Aliquot Rudimenta Physicae consists of four separate compendia bound together, the Compendium Technologiae, Logicae, Rhetoricae, and Physicae. The work is an interesting and thorough attempt to summarize a system of knowledge with impeccable American provenance.

The first volume contains mathematical problems, which appear to be college exercises (1814); the second volume is an essay on the projection of the sphere and spherical trigonometry, including an appendix on astronomy (1812); and the third volume is a lecture on natural philosophy, apparently prepared for delivery [n.d.].

This volume contains two selections: the first are problems in geometry and trigonometry, and the second concerning fortifications and their layout. Note on fly-leaf says this volume was found in the Bastile.

This volume contains calculations of the distances of stars, eclipses, and longitude, made by William Maule, James Cresson, Joseph Jeanes, James James, and Robert Hutchinson, pupils in the Friends Academy, where Roberts was a teacher.

Notes kept by the Yale undergraduate John Austin Stevens on 20 lectures on natural philosophy delivered by Jeremiah Day during the fall, 1812. Includes lectures on gravitation, mechanics, and hydrostatics (hydrology), the last including theories of rivers, springs, and groundwater.

By an unknown author, this notebook is of experiments and the history of experiments with electricity, containing references to Franklin, Beccaria, and Priestley, etc.

This is Taylor's dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. It was originally published in Latin (Edinburgh, 1800), and John Brandreth made this English translation for a friend in 1830.

These logbooks record two voyages (to Corunna, Spain, 1789-1790, and to Oporto, Portugal, 1791, and returns to Philadelphia), with observations of differences in temperature between air and water, especially when passing the Gulf Stream or any land or banks.

This work contains some material on electricity. There are also 14 plates, representing the essential elements of mathematics, physics, and cosmography.

This journal was found among the papers of Benjamin Smith Barton, who was Pursh's patron, after his death in 1817. For provenance of manuscript see ms. notes in printed edition by Thomas P. James - 581.974:P97.

The approximately 3,700 color and black and white drawings were collected and drawn by John Lawrence LeConte, with two in the first volume are by Titian R. Peale, but most are likely by John Abbot. The previous description noted that there are some drawings by John Abbot, and that most were likely by John Lawrence Le Conte. However, John V. Calhoun has shown extensive evidence that most of the drawings are by John Abbot (John Abbot's "Lost" Drawings for John E. LeConte in the American Philosophical Society Library, Philadelphia. This volume contains medical notes by Wistar, including observations on yellow fever and arguments to prove its foreign origin, facts relative to the progress of the fever in 1797, the infection and death of Colonel Van Emburgh, the infection of the crew of the ship "Deborah" and of the Durham boat (1802), an account of the diseases which afflicted the family of James Hammar in Montgomery County (Pa.), facts relating to the typhus fever of 1812-1813, case histories (1796-1803), temperature chart (1758-1759, 1760), and a thermometrical journal (1760-1765) kept by Charles Norris and copied by Wistar from notes in possession of Joseph Parker Norris.

This set of journals, copied legibly but with many excisions into the last volume, 914 Sm61, is from a tour of Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France, and England, to inspect technological improvements in manufacturing and mining. There are accounts of visits with C.D. Ebeling, Friedrich Klopstock, J.A.J. Reimarus, Anders Sparmann, and Karl P. Thunberg. Smith bequeathed this journal to the American Philosophical Society with the request that it be published if found to contain information "useful to the manufactories of my country."
