Abstract:

Pursh provides an extended description in Latin. Meehan (1898: 37) lists this as Phacelia circinata Jacq. (Ecl. Pl. Rar. 1: 135. 1816), a later name for the South American species P. magellanica (Lam.) Coville (in Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 4: 159. 1898). A previous effort to designate a type by Heckard (in Univ. Calif. Publ. Bot. 32: 68. 1960) is not correct (Greuter et al., 1994) as he failed to distinguish from among the syntypes which element he considered to be the lectotype. The type was collected near Kamiah in Idaho Co., Idaho, on 9 Jun 1806. This was the last day the expedition was at Camp Chopunnish; no mention is made of collecting plants on this date (Moulton, 1991: 348-350).
