Abstract:

Pursh (1813: 426) gives the location of the species as on "the low plains of the Columbia" and cites a Lewis collection. The hand written Pursh label mounted on the sheet applies to Pedicularis cystopteridifolia (see No. 131 above). The location given by Pursh in print is suspicious, however, for the same statement was given for two other species, Clematis hirsutissima and Koeleria macrantha. In both cases the specimens were actually gathered near Kamiah in Idaho Co., Idaho. It is likely that P. groenlandica represents a third instance of misattribution. At any rate, the species was probably not collected along the Blackfoot River in Montana as one might assume merely by examining the label.
