Abstract:

The var. quadrivalvis is an extinct Native American cultivar derived from Nicotiana quadrivalvis var. bigelovii (Torr.) De Wolf (in Southw. Naturalist 2: 179. 1958), a wild variety that occurs west of the Rocky Mountains in eastern California, southeastern Oregon and adjacent western Nevada. The lectotype was collected along the Missouri River above the Walworth-Campell Co. line in South Dakota on 12 Oct 1804 (Moulton, 1987a: 470). Clark reports he received "Some Tobacco of their own make" (Moulton, 1987a: 160) at the Rhtarahe village in Corson Co., South Dakota (1987a: 166), but it is unclear if this was a specimen or the finished product which seems more likely. In a second copy of his journal for this date, Clark says he received "a twist of their Tobacco & Seeds of 2 Kind of Tobacco" (1987a: 162) from the Arikaras. Lewis subsequently refers to a seed packet of "The Larger species"-which he numbers 108-and provides a detailed description of the plant (Moulton, 1987a: 460-461). As Moulton states (1987a: 472), the description is clearly that of var. quadrivalvis. As for "The smaller species," Moulton suggests Lewis's brief description (1987a: 461) is probably what we now know as N. rustica L. (Sp. Pl.: 180. 1753), the Mexican species known as Aztec tobacco. Both would be cultivated as no native species of Nicotiana occur on the Great Plains (Great Plains Flora Association, Fl. Great Plains: 637. 1986). Another cultivar, N. quadrivalvis var. multivalvis (Lindl.) A. Gray (in Brewer, Bot. Calif. 1: 546. 1876), of the Pacific Northwest is also extinct (Turner & Taylor, 1972).
